    Dear Friend,

Welcome to the New Year2011! As we move into this year, our focus is on thefuture. And as Christians, we should always view the future through the lens ofscriptural prophecy. We must always be looking to the soon coming of our Lord andSavior, Jesus Christ. Much of biblical prophecy centers on that singular event andall the surrounding happenings that are referred to as the end times.

Prophecy is one of my favorite subjects. Ive taught on it numerous occasions and Ihave an upcoming book on understanding the book of Revelation. Weve decided todevote this issue of Connectionthe magazineentirely to prophecy in the Bible.

Our 2011 Connectionthe magazineBible studies are directly based on mydevotional, The Daily God Book. We hope you find the new study both inspiring andspiritually nourishing.

Tim LaHaye, best-selling author of the Left Behindseries, contributed an articlefrom his Prophecy Study Bibleentitled Bible Prophecy and the Tribulation. Here,Tim points out some fundamental keys to interpreting Bible prophecy.

My beautiful wife, Lenya, teaches readers to understand the indicators givenby Jesus Christ to discern the false and dangerous from the true and certainprophecies.

Joel Rosenberg, American communications strategist, author, and my friend, speakson the happenings in Israel and the events described in the book of Revelation inOff the Cuff.

Our From the Blog section addresses the topic of false prophets from a biblicalstandpoint. And Hot Spots draws our attention to a perpetually interestingquestion: Whats the significance of the number 666?

As always, youll find great resources, articles, and relevant information to help yougrow in your personal walk with Jesus Christ. May God bless you this New Year!

    In His Strong Love,

Minutes before thebroadcast started, a man in the studio tripped over a wire andsnapped the only line of communication between England and

America. Everyone was frantic. But one smart apprenticeknew what to do. He grabbed both ends of the broken wire andallowed the signal to f low through his body. The kings wordswere literally transmitted through him.

Gods message to the people. Our Lord hasspoken to us through the biblical prophets. Onepastor told a friend that he didnt preach onprophecy: Prophecy only distracts people fromthe present. His friend replied, Then therescertain ly a lot of distraction in the Scriptures!

About one-fourth of the Bible is prophetic.Eighteen books are completely devoted toprophecy: seventeen in the Old Testamentand one in the New Testament. There areimportant prophetic passages in other books,

like 2 Thessalonians and Matthew chapter 24.In fact, there are prophetic verses throughoutthe Word. Knowing prophecy is important.

God chose diverse people who used variousmethods to communicate His message to thepeople. Some of the prophets ministered throughproclamation, speaking Gods message for thepeople of a particular time. There was Noah,a preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5), whowarned his generation of the coming judgment

through the f lood. Some prophets, like Moses, were patriotic. Remember how he boldly stoodagain and again before Pharaoh demanding, Letmy people go? In some messages, God pointeda f inger at peoples sin. Many times these pas-sages begin with the word woe. When you seethat, youd better watch out! And sometimes theprophets message was inspiring: God is going todo something great.

Sometimes prophets performed Gods mes-sage in front of the people to get their attention.Jeremiah walked around wearing a huge woodenyoke on his neck to show that enslavement wouldcome to the people of Israel in the future. AndHosea was commanded to marry a prostitute todemonstrate how God feels when His people areunfaithful.

Prophecy is history written in advance. Theprophets were Gods mouthpieces, revealingevents before they occurred. In other words, theirmessages were predictive of something that wouldhappen in the future. Sometimes it was in the

near future; sometimes in the far-of ffutureall the way to the end of theage. Through prophecy, God drawsaside the veil of the future to give usan indication of His plans for thehuman race and the universe.

One of Gods call ing cards is ful-f illed prophecy. He knows everything(His omniscience) and predicts certain things before they happen.God told Abraham that his descendants will be strangers in a landthat is not theirsfour hundred years (Genesis 15:13)and theywere. Through His prophets, God predicted the Babylonian captivityeven before Babylon existed as a military threatand it happened.Prophecy demonstrates Gods ultimate control over history. Jeremiahwrote, I wil l give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and

he shall carry them captive to Babylon and slay them with the sword(Jeremiah 20:4).

These passages are some of the most important and fascinatingportions of Scripture. God is not conf ined to space and time. He hasspoken of things to come. Prophecy is a powerful tool that opens thewindow of eternity. He said: Remember the former things of old, forI am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times thingsthat are not yet done, saying My counsel shall stand, and I wil l do all

    My pleasure (Isaiah 46:9-10).

Most importantly, God promised the coming of Jesus in the Mes-sianic prophecies. These are Old Testament promises fulf illed inthe New Testament. They speak about Christ, His power, authority, character, and future actions. Its rather easy to see their fulf illment:just watch for the way the New Testament writers make reference toOld Testament passages regarding Jesus. Jesus Himself said, Do notthink that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come

to destroy but to fulf ill (Matthew 5:17).

There is also prophecy yet to be fulf illed concerning the end timesand Christs second coming, notably in the book of Revelation. As you read the book of Revelation, a special benefit is bestowed:Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of thisprophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time

    is near (Revelation 1:3).

Revelation is the only book in the Bible that has a promise:Readme and youll be blessed. The more you read, the happier youll be! Butplease note that it says to read it, hear it, andkeep it. Lets rememberthat prophecy was intended to encourage obedience. Jesus warned Hisfollowers about the future so they could learn how to live in the pres-ent. The idea is to help us remain spiritual ly alert and prepared as wewait for His return.

Prophecy is intended to give hope. Newspapers are f illed with violence, scandal, and political hagglingtheyre depressing. But Gods plan forthe future provides encouragement: We know He wil l intervene in his-tory to conquer evil. We need to choose whether we will live in the light

of eternity or only for what we see and receive in this world.

We live in a time of very high anxiety. We all want to know whatsgoing to happen tomorrow. What does the future hold? Will there be anArmageddon? Will there be an end to this world? Will Jesus real ly returnto the earth visibly and physicallyand when?

Many people are grasping at straws to get answers to their questions. They read the horoscope to find out what the stars show. They get theirpalms read. They turn to the prophets in tabloid newspapers or the

late night television psychics. Meanwhile, God has written all aboutthe future of the earth, the human race, and what we can expect. Andnot just in the book of Revelationbut in Daniel, Ezekiel, and otherparts of Scripture.

Prophecy shouldnt make people uncomfortable. Instead, it shouldmake believers conf ident. Biblical prophecy is not about predictingsomething that may or may not come true the way man makes predic-tions. Biblical prophecy isnt like shaking a Magic 8 Ball and turning itover for the answer. When God makes a prediction its because He knowsthe end from the beginning. His precision is not kind of or sort ofaccurateits defin ite. His Word wil l come true in His perfect time anddesign.

The study of prophecy is a fruitful exercise because scriptural proph-ecy, when properly interpreted, provides a guideline for godly living. Itmotivates Christians to the highest standard of holiness.

As we study prophecy, my prayer is that we wont walk away with new

tidbits about who Gog and Magog are or with fancy charts on the endtimes to impress people. After examining Gods prophecy, I pray wellwalk away trusting God more than weve ever trusted Him before.

Every tomorrow has two handles: the handle of anxiety and the handleof faith. Unfortunately, many people grab onto the handle of anxiety:Whats going to happen tomorrow? What about next month? Next year?Every timeGod makes a promise and we witness its fulf illment, we should movecloser and closer to the handle of faith:My God is faithful . I trust Him com-

pletely. As Corrie ten Boom said, Never be afraid to trust an unknown

    future to a known God.

Obviously, this was a time when it waspretty easy to spot a alse prophet. But therehave been many times when wellrespectedsources have totally missed the mark whenmaking claims about the uture. In 1962, BrianEpstein approached Decca Records to signan upandcoming new group called TheBeatles. The manager o the recording com

pany replied, Guitar groups are on their wayout, Mr. Epstein. Wrong. Then there was theteacher who told the concerned ather o awayward student, It doesnt matter what hedoes, he will never amount to anything. Thestudent? Albert Einstein.

    SIGNS OF THE TIMES

People have always been curious about theuture. Jesus knew Satan would exploit thatcuriosity to try to lead us astray. Thereore,Jesus gave us indicators to help us discernthe alse and dangerous rom the true andcertain. Jesus told us to watch or the ollowing signs:

    alse prophets

    wars and rumors o wars

    increased natural disasters

    signs in the heavens

    False Prophets

And He said: Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, I am He, and, The time has drawn near.Thereore do not go ater them (Luke 21:8).

Although we may not remember the namesMarshall Applewhite or Bonnie Nettles,we certainly remember the Heavens Gatemass suicide in 1997. These two individualsconvinced 39 people that an alien spaceship was ollowing the HaleBopp comet. Toreach the saety o the spaceship, they wereinstructed to kill themselves. Their gruesomeremains were later discovered in a mansionnear San Diego. Sadly, this group o peoplelistened to alse prophetsand paid withtheir lives.

    Wars and Rumors of Wars

War is a act o lie. Any given day, soldiersare engaged in battle in 30 to 40 nationsacross the world. Although we see an obvious increase in wars, Jesus gave us a necessary perspective:

But when you hear o wars and commotions,do not be terried; or these things must cometo pass rst, but the end will not come immediately(Luke 21:9).

I wars alone were the predictor o the endo the age, we would already be long gone.Like labor pains, the contractions o wars

around the world will increase in intensityand requency as the end times draw nearer.

Will mankind ever give peace a chance,as John Lennon implored? Richard Staar, the director o the Hoover Institution o War,Revolution, and Peace doesnt think so. Heanticipates an increase in regional conictsconrming the words o Jesus: Nation willrise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom(Luke 21:10). And this is only one o the

    signs o the end times.

    Natural Disasters

In April o 2010, Icelands volcano, Eyjajallajkull, erupted. Thousands o Europeanights were canceled due to the resultinggiant cloud o ash. For ve days, air trafccame to a virtual halt in northern Europeancountries.

And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and amines and pestilences; andthere will be earul sights and great signsrom heaven (Luke 21:11).

We dont even have to look outside our owncountry to nd evidence o this. ConsiderHurricane Katrina. This Atlantic storm was themost costly American disaster to date. Katrina roared into the coast o Louisiana with

125 mph winds, breaking levees and leaving80% o the city under water. Over 1800 werekilled and damages were estimated at 125billion dollars.

    Signs in the Heavens

As another sign o the end o the age,Jesus told His disciples to look or celestialindicators:

And there will be signs in the sun, in themoon, and in the stars (Luke 21:25).

Man has always looked to the heavens withwonder and awe. This past August, the earthside o the sun erupted in a blaze o activityknow as the coronal mass ejection or asolar are. The superheated gas comingo the star hurtled through space. It was so

    ive senses cont.

large it was visible on earth without the aido a solar telescope.

The Apostle Peter made reerence to uturecelestial disturbances unlike any we haveever seen:

But the day o the Lord will come as a thiein the night, in which the heavens will passaway with a great noise, and the elements willmelt with ervent heat; both the earth and theworks that are in it will be burned up (2 Peter3:10).

So how should we live our lives in view o auture lled with steadily greater challenges? How can we avoid becoming depressed, terried, or dulled into complacency?

    COME TO YOUR FIVE SENSES

KEEP AN EYE ON THE FUTURE

Ater a long winter, we look or signs ospring. It might be a yellow crocus pushingthrough the snow or the early blooming othe orsythia. We are to be aware and observant. Jesus said:

Look at the g tree, and all the trees. Whenthey are already budding, you see and knowor yourselves that summer is now near. Soyou also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom o God is near(Luke 21:29-31).

We must keep our eyes always openlooking or signs o the coming o Gods kingdom.

KEEP A LIGHT TOUCH ON THE WORLD

Perspective is everything. Our world istemporary, but Gods Word is eternal. Keeping this in mind, we are likely to make wiserdecisions about where and how we investour energies.

But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts

be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares o this lie, and that Day comeon you unexpectedly(Luke 21:34).

Keep a light touch on this world and keepeternity rmly in your heart.

    REMEMBER THE SWEETAROMA OF PRAYER

Have you ever been driving somewhereand become so lost in thought that youwent right by your destination? Its easy tobecome distracted by the enticements andcares o this world.

Watch thereore, and pray always that youmay be counted worthy to escape all thesethings that will come to pass, and to standbeore the Son o Man (Luke 21:36).

Jesus reminded us that to be counted worthy, we should praya lot. God so loves ourprayers He regards them as a sweet aroma:

And the smoke o the incense, with theprayers o the saints, ascended beore Godrom the angels hand (Revelation 8:4).

Watch what is happening around you andpray so that you can maintain a Godwardocus.

DEVELOP AN EAR FOR THE TRUTH

There will always be people who ridicule theWord o God and cast doubt on its truthulness:

Scofers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying,"Where is the promise o His coming? Forsince the athers ell asleep, all thingscontinue as they were rom the beginningo creation"(2 Peter 3:3-4).

Just because something hasnt happenedyet doesnt mean it wont happen. Remember the iconic scoer, Harry Truman, who in1980 reused to leave his home on Mount St.Helens in spite o the increasing rumblingso the volcano? The eruption came and HarryTruman was never seen again. Neighborslater said that Truman thought he wouldbe able to see the lava coming down themountain and still have time to get to saety.Unortunately or him, the blast came at 300miles per hour.

Listening to Gods Word and taking heed othe signs result in wise actions.

TASTE AND SEE THAT GOD IS GOOD

When we look to Jesus as the author andnisher o our aith, we have reason to lit ourheads in condence and anticipation.

Now when these things begin to happen, lookup and lit up your heads, because your redemption draws near (Luke 21:28).

For the godly, there is genuine hope evenin the midst o a world convulsing in chaos. Our heavenly Father is a good God with goodthings planned or His children. Until we are

with Him in paradise, He wants us to seek Himdiligently, know Him deeply, and trust Himcompletely.

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;blessed is the man who trusts in Him!(Psalm 34:8).

I coness that when Im reading a novel, Isometimes ip to the back o the book to seehow it ends. Billy Graham apparently did the

same thing. He said, Ive read the last page othe Bible. Its all going to turn out all right.

As orwardthinking believers, we can acetough times with condence: knowing thework Jesus did on the cross means a happyending or His children. He has promised Iwill come again and receive you to Mysel; thatwhere I am, there you may be also(John 14:3).Good to know, isnt it?

    USE YOUR SENSES

    1. Look or the coming kingdom

    2. Keep your heart light

    3. Watch and pray

    4. Know your Masters voice

    Prophecy is Gods roadmap to

show us where history is going.

The Bibles predictions claimliteral and specic fulllments

    that verify that such prophecies

are indeed from God. The key

    to interpreting Bible prophecy

is in discerning what is literaland what is symbolic.

Therefore, the best way to avoid

    confusion in the study of

    18

prophetic Scripture is to ollowthese simple directions:

    1. Interpret prophecy literallywherever possible.God meant what He said and

said what He meant when Heinspired holy men o God [who]spake as they were moved bythe Holy Ghost (2 Peter 1:21) towrite the Bible. Consequently wecan take the Bible literally mosto the time. Where God intendsor us to interpret symbolically,He makes it obvious. One o thereasons the book o Revelationis difcult or some people tounderstand is that they try tospiritualize the symbols usedin the book. However, sincemany Old Testament prophecies have already been literallyullled, such as God turning

water to blood (Exodus 4:9; 7:1721), it should not be difcult toimagine that uture propheticevents can and will be literallyullled at the appropriate time.Only when symbols or gures ospeech make absolutely no literal sense, should anything but

    a literal interpretation be sought.

    2. Prophecies concerning Israeland the church should not betransposed. The promises o God to Israelto be ullled in the latterdays, particularly those con

cerning Israels punishmentduring the Tribulation have ab

    solutely nothing to do with thechurch. The Bible gives specicpromises or the church thatshe will be raptured into heaven beore the Tribulation (John14:2-3; 1 Corinthians 15:51-52;

    1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

    3. For symbolic passages, compare Scripture withScripture.

The Bible is not contradictory.Even though written by numerous, divinely inspired men over

a period o sixteen hundredyears, it is supernaturally consistent in its use o terms. Forexample, the word beast isused ortyour times in Revelation and many other times inScripture. Daniel explains thatthe word is symbolic o either aking or a kingdom (see Daniel7-8). By examining the contentsin Revelation and Daniel, youwill nd that beast has thesame meaning in both books. Many other symbols used inRevelation are also taken directly rom the Old Testament. These include the tree o lie

    (Revelation 2:7; 22:2; 14), thebook o lie (Revelation 3:5),and Babylon (Revelation 14:8).

Some symbols in Revelation aredrawn rom other New Testament passages. These includeterms such as the Word o

    God (1:2, 9), Son o man(1:13; 14:14), marriage supper

God meant what He said and said what

(19:9), the Bride (21:9, 22:17),rst resurrection (20:5-6),and second death (2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8). Other symbols inRevelation are explained andidentied in their context. For

example, Alpha and Omegarepresents Jesus Christ (1:8, 11;21:6; 22:13); the seven candlesticks (1:13, 20) are the sevenchurches; the dragon is Satan(12:3); and the male child isJesus (12:5, 13).

    Though some prophetic pas

sages should be interpretedsymbolically, it is important toremember that symbols in theBible depict real people, things, and events. For example, theseven candlesticks in Revelation 1 represent real churchesthat actually existed when the

    prophecy was given.

As an example o how to interpret prophecy, lets look atthe Tribulation as described inScripture.

The TribulationThere is no question this world

will yet experience a time o greatTribulation, such as was not sincethe beginning o the world to thistime as predicted by our Lord(Matthew 24:21). In Revelation 3:10,He promised to keep believersrom the hour o temptation whichshall come upon all the world, to

try them that dwell upon the earth.

Such a time will have to be worsethan anything ever known in humanhistory; ar worse than the destruction o Jerusalem in AD 70 (1 millioncasualties), than the Black Plague(9 million killed), than World War I(20 million killed), than the devastation o World War II and HitlersHolocaust (6 million Jews and atleast 4 million Christians killed).

The Scripture gives more space todescribing the coming Tribulation

period than to any other propheticevent. The Hebrew prophets mention it 39 times, calling it a time oJacobs trouble (Jeremiah 30:7),Tribulation (distress, Deuteronomy 4:30), and many other titlesdenoting distress. The New Testament calls it the day o the Lord

(1 Thessalonians 5:2), the wrath oGod (Revelation 14:10; 15:1, 7; 16:1),and the wrath o the Lamb (Revelation 6:16-17). Revelation 619 describes the events o that Tribulation period, the best description othis terriying, closeathand timethat will try the whole world.

Daniel, the Hebrew prophet thatJesus quoted most, predictedthat troublous times would lastseven years and be started by thesigning o a sevenyear covenantbetween Israel and the princethat shall come (called elsewhere

antichrist orthe beast). Thenhe predicted thisbeast or governmental ruler would

break that covenant in the middleo the Tribulationand desecrate thetemple (Daniel9:26-27). Again,Daniel predictedthat whenAntichrist arises,he will be empowered by Satan himsel with all powerand signs and lying wonders(2 Thessalonians2:9), and willdesecrate the

There is little doubt as to whenthis Tribulation occurs or how long

it will last. Daniel predicts it willlast one week (seven years, 9:27).John in Revelation divides it intotwo periods o three and onehalyears each or 1,260 days each, atotal o seven years. During the rstthree and onehal years, more thanonehal o the worlds populationdies. During the second hal, conditions get even worse ater Satan iscast out o heaven and indwells theAntichrists body and demands theworld worship him. Our Lord Jesuspredicted this Tribulation wouldend immediately prior to His return

    OFF THE CUFF

    with

Skip: Joel, thanks or being with us today.I want to talk speciically about the book o

Revelation. A lot o people read the bookand not see it as literalnot see it as having any contemporary meaning whatsoever. Its either been ulilled or its too hard tounderstand; thereore its ignored. Speak alittle bit on that.

Joel: The book o Revelation is deinitelyhard to read. I think it s a tough book to getyour hands around but its important andwe need to allow the Holy Spirit to open

our eyes to it. Its critical and interestingthat both [the Apostle] John and the angelsspeaking to him said seal some o thisupand Daniel said the same thing. Someprophecies arent going to be able to beunderstood or easily understood until weget closer to the end times. Yet the booko Revelation is the only book in the Biblethat has an actual, direct blessing or thosewho read it. I think when people slow downand go through the book, its not as hard as

many would have expected. Yes, some o itis symbolic language. Some o it is metaphoric. But that doesnt mean its not literal. In other words, its true but God is at timesusing some word pictures to help peopleunderstand uture events that wouldvebeen absolutely impossible or John himsel, much less anyone reading, to understandwhat in the world they were talking about.

Skip: So its imagery thatpoints to reality.

Joel: Let me give you anexample. I think o Revelation chapter 12. Peoplelook at that and they sayOK, theres a woman, shehas a Child, and they areattacked by a red dragon.People throughout the ageshave said it doesnt meananything and, even i it did,who could understand? But

actually its not that diicult.Yes, at irst glance weregetting a word picture. Thewoman gives birth to a maleChild who is to rule all thenations with a rod o ironand her Child was caughtup to God and to His throne.Thats verse 5. Verse 17 saysthe dragon goes to waragainst the ospring who

keep the commandments oGod and have the testimonyo Jesus Christ. I mean, just a little bit o eort andyou realize the woman isIsrael as a nation who gavebirth to a male Child whobecame Jesus who will rulethe world one day, right? In verse 9, the dragon wasthrown down, the serpent o

old who is called the deviland Satan. He deceives thewhole world and goes onthe attack. So again, its notdiicult to see the dragonis the devil, the woman isIsrael, and the male Childis Christ. The red dragon isSatan and theres going tobe a massive battle. Satan iscontinually trying to destroy

Israel, Christ, and His ollowers in the last days. Andthats really where wereheading. Israel is back asa country againpropheticallyand theres a satanicattack rom almost every direction hitting Israelis, Jews, and ollowers o Christ.

Skip: Lets talk a little bitabout signs o the times. There are signs and thenthere are mega signsbigpointers that somethingshappening. And I would say

the happenings in Israel areone o the mega signs. Fromyour viewpoint, what arethose signs o the times thatwe, as believers, should seeas a wakeup call?

Joel: Are we seeing anything that suggests weregetting closer to the eventsdescribed in the book o

    Revelation? Yes. For me,

there are three major happenings. First, the rebirtho Israel. Israel is centralto all the attention o theearth and there is a sort o

satanic battle against Israel. The second one is that thetemple will be rebuilt andwill be ully operational asthe events o Revelationunold. Now we dont havea temple today, but thereis an awul lot o activity. Many preparations are beingmade right now by OrthodoxJews in Israel. Theyve got

architectural plans done.Theyre sewing the priestlygarments. Theyve rebuiltmost o the implementsused or sacriice. Theyretraining Levitical priests onhow to run a temple. One othe most signiicant thingsis that the Sanhedrin, the

Joel Rosenbergis a NewYork Times bestselling

council o 71 rabbis that ranthe temple in ages past, disbanded around the 5thcentury. But its back. In2006, the Sanhedrin recovered and is getting readyto run a temple in the nottoo distant uture. The thirdevent is Babylon. In thebook o Revelation, Babylonis described as not only being reborn as a country andcity, but also as the ocalpoint o evil and commerce.Babylon is going to becomethis incredibly, enormously, wealthy, powerul ocus sothat when its destroyedsupernaturally with judgment, all the merchantso the earth are going tobe weeping. People havesaid thats allegorical but Ibelieve Babylon is Babylonthe actual city in Iraq. Andthat city is being rebuilt aswe speak. The walls are up.The palaces are being built.Iraqs government actuallyhas a master plan to inishthe city. The New York Timesreported not too long agothey want an amusementpark and a Holiday Inn. Imean, these guys have aplan. And theyre not evangelical Christians sittingaround going, how can wemake the book o Revelationseem more relevantlikeits literally true? These areSunni and Shia Muslims whoview the city o Babylon asa goldmine. Thats the gameplan o the Iraqi governmenttoday.

Skip: Hearing all this, I wishwe would rekindle that oldchurch axiom: maranatha.

We should say it to oneanother more otentheLord is coming. Its such agreat reminder. Were beingshaken today economicallyand that can be such a goodthing or our nation. We seeit as bad, but i it drives usto the anticipation o His

Coming, would you agreethat the Lord could use that?

Joel: One o the otherindicators o where we arenow and how close we may

be getting to the book oRevelation coming true isthe economic and politicalreuniication o Europe. TheAntichrist is going to emergeout o Europe and weregoing to have a system:one political and economicsystem. Its hard to imagineeven 100 years ago thatEurope could be the center

o explaining to the worldhow we should all be one. Imean, what continent wasmore divided by World War I,World War II, the Holocaust, and the Cold War? Thatregion has come together, not necessarily or the good, but its come together withborderless crossings, onepolitical system, and one

currency. And I think theyare going to be the modelor the rest o the world toollow ater the rapture.

    In verse 9, the

    dragon was thrown

    down, the serpent

    of old who is called

    the devil and Satan.

    He deceives thewhole world and

    goes on the attack.

Question:Ive heard several radio and television preachers predict and/or prophesy regard-

ing events, occurrences, and datesyet they never happen! Are these preachersconsidered false prophets according to the Bible?

    FROM THE BLOG

    Aw:

Throughout the years, many people haveboth prophesied and predicted eventsthat never came to pass.

One o the best examples is CharlesTaze Russell, the rst president o theWatchtower Society (an organizationounded or Jehovahs Witnesses). Russellprophesied that the second coming oChrist would occur in 1874. When the yearcame and went without Christs appearance, he altered his predictiononly toconclude that 1918 would be the ofcialdate o Gods judgment. Not surprisingly, this day also came and went. And in1974once againthe Watchtower Societyproclaimed that 1975 would be the yearo Christs return. Guess what? It didnthappen!

Its important to note that Charles TazeRussell is not the only person who hasmade spurious predictions regardingthe uture. Below are several other airlyrecent calculations:

William Miller, a ounding member o theSeventhDay Adventists, predicted thatChrist would return between March 1843and March 1844.

Herbert W. Armstrong, ounder o theWorldwide Church o God, said eventsushering in Armageddon would occur in1975.

Harold Camping, the president o FamilyStations, Inc., predicted that Christ wouldreturn in September o 1994.

The one thing allo these men had in

common isthey werewrong! The events theypredicted never occurred. Why? Jesus said,But o that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels o heaven, but MyFather only (Matthew 24:36).

The above is only a partial list o people

throughout the ages who have prophesiedor predicted events that never happened.

So what should weas believerslearnrom this?

First, we need to clearly understand thedenition oprophecy. According to NelsonsNew Christian Dictionary, prophecy is amessage conveyed by a prophet acting onbehal o God in any given situation.

The denition rules out any o the abovementioned people as being a prophet. Theevents they predicted did not come true. The messages they proclaimed were alseand God would never give His prophet awrong message.

Second, we need to distinguish betweenauthentic prophecies and, lets say, a hunchor a eeling. Prophecy is a distinct message rom God given to a prophet thatwill denitelyoccur in the uture. But whatabout a person who has a eeling aboutan event which proves to be wrong? Thisisnt prophecy. I the person isnt claimingthat the hunch is rom the Lord then he isnot making a prophetic announcement onbehal o the Lordand shouldnt be calleda alse prophet. However, there is a ne linebetween claiming something is rom theLord or rom personal opinion. Its a dangerous position or a preacher o the Word toplace himsel.

Third, I recommend that all Christiansstudy Scripture thoroughly. The true biblicalprophets help us understand the ull counsel o Gods Word. Dont listen to only one

person regarding the endtimes. More oten thannot, he or she will leave

    you conused or lackinginormation.

Entrust to the Lord theultimate understanding o prophecy. Believethe Biblenothing more, nothing lessinrelation to prophetic announcements. Godhas revealed His truth in His Word.
