SA 1WOMEN IN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISMTom Glover, 10 WeeksMonday 9 – 12February 3 - April 6Tuition $300

Learn about the contributions of women painters and how they helped spur on the abstract movement. We will explore a variety of powerhouse women painters and some more obscure female artists. Looking at various examples of women abstract painters we will examine how they influenced each other and what effect they had on their male counterparts.In weaving a more complete story together of the development of Abstract Expressionism, we will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the historical context and contribution of women artists. Students will be encouraged to experiment with some of the techniques of the artists we study. Demos will help illustrate some of the techniques, along with discussion about formal issues that each of the artists were engaged in. Work in your favorite medium. These artists of the forties and fifties were using a wide range of materials, as traditional rules were being broken. Be prepared to experiment and don’t be shy about working larger!

Would you like to have fun drawing the world around you but are not sure how to? This class will help you get started and build your confidence through step by step drawing exercises. The class will cover contour line drawing, how to shade to create depth and form, perspective and composition. You will draw from still life forms to acquire observational skills and experiment with drawing techniques and materials. This is a fun and supportive class that will give you a chance to try out new ideas and develop your own unique way of drawing. Open to any level.

SA 3DRAWING WITH GOLD INKCarol Morley, 4 WeeksMonday 1 - 4April 13 – May 4Tuition $200 Lab Fee $20

Explore the beauty of gold ink and bring a new dimension to your drawings. Liquid Spectralite 18 carat gold ink can be applied directly to paper surfaces with a brush or dip pen. Instructor will demonstrate the traditional crow quill pointed pen method and show you how you can embellish your art with textures, details andflowing golden lines. The gold ink flows surprisingly well with a dip pen and is compatible with colored pencil, watercolor and gouache. A truly fun medium, you will experiment using gold ink on white, colored and black papers. All levels welcome.

SA 4WORKING WITH/FROM A MASTERTom Glover, 10 WeeksMonday 6 - 9February 3 - April 6Tuition $300

Each student will pick a master, an artist who really speaks to you, and then we will travel down a road of exploration. Picasso once said, “good artists borrow, great artists steal!”. So we will be breaking into Rembrandt’s paintings or Cezanne’s, or whom-ever you wish, and stealing their colors, brushstrokes and ideas! It is a chance to dive deep into a body of work that has moved you and influenced you. It is time to put on dark clothing, grab a flashlight and slip into a Velasquez painting and route around a bit! It should all be in good fun and weshould each be able to learn from the other. If you are wanting to tackle Sargent’s watercolors, then please bring watercolors. If it’s Hoffman’s “push and pull” paintings bring thick gobs of oil paint. Degas ballerinas—bring some pastels. It is suggested that you work in the medium of your master.

SA 5CONTEMPLATIVE ART PRACTICESSean Kramer, 8 Weeks Tuesday 9:30 – 12:30February 11 – March 31Tuition $290 Materials $35

The sessions of this workshop will be pleasantly spent mediating and doing art meditatively. We will begin each class working with our body, breath and mind. Then we will try a variety of contemplative art practices: mandalas and yantras, spontaneous and intuitive art making, working with symbols, drawing our journey, surrealist techniques, and more. The emphasis will be on the process, art as a meditative practice, letting go of the inner critic.

This class will provide training in the direct observation ofform and its surrounding elements. The emphasis will be ondrawing and controlling watercolor media while re-creatingthe appearance of nature with use of surrounding forms. Thedevelopment of forms as derived from the study ofperspective, composition, value and color will play as thefoundation for this class.

Explore the figure! Using a direct method of painting and sketching in oil, we will examine themes of proportion and gesture, working to relate values and colors and finding useful anatomical cues and visualeffects to help place your figure on the canvas. Simplifying the figureinto the most important shapes, angles and light effects will help giveyou a working method for approaching the complex beauties of the human form.

SA 8PAINTING THE STILL LIFE IN OILSydney Sparrow, 10 WeeksWednesday10 – 1February 5 – April 8Tuition $300

In this ten-week course we will be approaching the still life, working to complete realistic, vibrant paintings from life. We will address both direct painting, as well as layered painting; from a drawing, to an underpainting, to a finished piece. The focus of the course is to use the observational process to more fully understand hue, value, and chroma as it relates to the still life. We will also spend time talking about color mixing, palettes, surfaces, and composition. This class is for every level of painter... from the beginner, who is learning to mix colors andmap out compositions, to the more advanced painter, who is

looking to more fully render paintings and overcome obstacles.

SA 9DRAWING THE FIGURE Sydney Sparrow, 10 Weeks Wednesday 2 – 5February 5 – April 8Tuition $300 Model Fee $100

This class is an opportunity for students to draw the figurefrom life over the course of ten weeks. We will work onseveral poses throughout the semester, starting each with alinear block-in and moving forward to a finished, 3-dimensional figure with full values and form. We willdiscuss and employ topics including gesture, proportion,comparative measurement, and building volume. We'llwork together through each step of the drawing via demos,problem-solving, and discussion. The focus will be tocreate figure drawings that demonstrate both anatomicalaccuracy and sensitivity to line work and composition.

SA 10YOUR SKETCHBOOK - THE KEY TO WONDERBill Paarlberg, 10 WeeksThursday 9 – 12February 6 – April 9Tuition $300

What’s the best way to: Learn to draw and paint fresher and looser? Explore new media and techniques? Test out a scene to see if it will make a good picture? Record your ideas? Leave a note for your future self? Keep a diary on your next travel adventure? Yes, a handy sketchbook is the key to it all. In this class we will do a lot of sketching. There will be demos in watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil. We will learn a little about perspective and composition. But more than that, we’ll learn how to think and work faster, how to use thumbnails and value studies,

and how to progress more quickly in our skills and artwork. Students of all levels are welcome to work in the media of their choice. Materials list provided upon registration.

Explore the natural world through sketching and drawing. Learn how to portray the characteristics of plants through observation and drawing exercises. Take your inspiration from nature and capture the diverse and intriguing shapes of the plant world and other garden friends, to create your own compelling compositional ideas. Through guided instruction you will learn about color mixing with colored pencils. Suitable for any level.

Enjoy drawing the flowers and blossoms of Spring. From bud to open flower we will learn how to observe the beauty of natural forms through a series of sketches and create a pleasingcomposition for a more finished rendering. Beginning students may choose to work in graphite and more advanced students in colored pencils or the medium of your choice. This class is open to students of all levels.

SA 13REPRESENTATIONAL OIL PAINTINGSean Beavers, 13 WeeksThursday 6 - 9January 30 – April 23Tuition $360

This studio class is for anyone from beginner to the advanced painter looking to develop their visual vocabularyand expression. From realism to expressionism, there are some simple methods that can significantly improve your oil painting, through the use of light, color, atmosphere andform. Students will be introduced to the knowledge and skills necessary to represent the world around them. Personal projects and assignments will help explore these concepts. Individual expression and growth will be encouraged. All painting levels will meet simultaneously, from beginner to advanced. Materials list presented at the first class. Beginners very welcome.

SA 14COLORED PENCIL TECHNIQUESCarol Morley, One DaySaturday 10:30 – 3:30February 22Tuition $105

Try your hand at colored pencils. This versatile medium can produce so many different effects from drawing to painting. Learn how to make complex textures and patterns that are simple to do. By varying pressure or pressing into the paper surface you can achieve a look as smooth as silk or a rough and deeply textured one. No drawing experience is required. You can create patterns and textures, abstract designs, decorative letters or bring in photo images to make an illustration or design. Color is the essence of this class, so we will examine how colors can harmonize together or create great contrast, recede into a background or appear to advance in space. Exploring and experimenting with this medium isa great way to get to know the language of color, pencil techniques and to develop your own creative ideas along the way.

Relief printing is a versatile method of printmaking involving carving and removing a portion of the printing plate to produce a design that can be stamped or printed on paper or fabric. Over two days this course will introduce you to linoleum block printing, stamp making, foam printing, creating printed editions, and printing patterns on fabric. Each student will receive their own linoleum carving tool to continue creating and printing after the workshop. Materials fee includes a carving tool, a 6” x 6” block to carve into as well as paper, fabric and ink.

Here is your chance, Green Foundry presents the opportunity for your saved treasuresto last forever; direct burn-out bronze casting. This workshopwill focus on using any organic material to create a bronzecasting. Create an exact replica of any organic matter using ahigh heat mold. The mold is fired and the debris from theoriginal object is removed and bronze is cast in its place, leavinga perfect reproduction of the original piece of driftwood or lace.Please join us for this innovative course!

This course offers the foundational skills of how to sculpt a portraitfrom life. Suitable for all skill levels. Classes will include demonstrations, brief lectures, working from a live model and one on one feedback. Anthony Alemany will teach his eclectic approach to modeling a portrait from start to finish. This class will emphasize the systematic study of proportions, anatomy, composition, and gesture while exploring creative finishing techniques. Pieces may be fired in the Sanctuary Arts kilns for a reasonable fee, or a mold made and cast at our Green Foundry.

In a relaxed, fun atmosphere, students will learn thebasics of wheel throwing techniques, glazing and firing.This is a high fire stoneware class for both beginning andintermediate students. Intermediate students can hope tobe taken to new horizons yet unexplored with thisexceptionally talented potter. Class limit is 6; we have 6wheels. (Lab fee includes 25 lbs clay, glazes, and firingcosts.)

SA 20INTRO TO JEWELRYAlice Carroll, 10 WeeksFriday 10 – 1February 7 – April 10Tuition $300 Lab Fee $45

This beginning intensive will cover the use of basic hand tools and the primary techniques in making jewelry and metal objects. We will cover hot and cold connections, piercing, surface decoration, light forging, forming, and basic stone settings. We will also explore various ways of casting such as the use of cuttlebone and delft clay. Students are encouraged to create their own designs. Bring a sketchbook to class. More advanced students will receive one on one help in applying advanced techniques to their designs. The class will be a mixture of demonstrations, lectures, and studio time.
