STEP 2Begin Sewing

1. Starting with Panel A, pin the rst two pieces 1 & 3 right sides together - see diagram a. Feed them under the presser foot aligning the edges with the side of the foot. NOTE: The distance from where the needle hits the fabric to the edge of the presser foot is 1/4” on most sewing machines. Sew from top edge to bottom edge being careful not to tug or pull on the fabrics. There is no need to backstitch when piecing by machine - see diagram b.

2. Take the 3rd piece 4 and place right sides together with the unsewn end of 3 . Sew. See diagram c.

STEP 1Cut Out The Pattern Pieces as shown in the Fabric Chart on page 1.

*Tip: Pressing is dierent than ironing. When pressing, lift up the iron and set it down again in a new area. Pressing is preferred to prevent distortion.

3. Now press the seams.

To press, use iron on cotton setting. Lay the sewn strip on the ironing board with wrong side up. Press seam allowances toward the darkest fabric. Turn fabric strip over and press seams making sure there are no creases. Set Panel A aside.

4. Proceed with Panel B, sewing and pressing 6 & 4 together.

5. Next sew and press Panel C together, 7 & 5 .

6. Using Section One diagram as a reference, sew and press Panel B and Panel C together.

7. Now attach the sewn Panel B & C to Panel D. Press.

8. Finally, attach Panel A and Section One is complete.

9. Complete Section Two using the same process as Section One. *Tip: This quilt is designed to be pieced together in straight lines. Just follow the quilt layout on page 2.

10. Pin Section One and Section Two right sides together to complete the rst row. Press.

11. Continue sewing the sections, then sewing them together to complete the rows.

12. Sew the four rows together . Press.

13. Lay the quilt at and trim any uneven edges.

STEP 3Quilt Back

1. Trim o the selvage and cut the fabric length in half.2. Pin the right sides together along the long edge matching up the pattern in the fabric if desired.

NOTE: It is necessary for the quilt backing and batting to be larger than the top to allow for shrinkage during quilting.

STEP 4 Quilt Assembly

1. Place the quilt back on a large at surface with the wrong side up. Smooth out the wrinkles.

2. Place the batting on top of the qult back and smooth it out.

3. Center the quilt top on top of the batting and the back creating a “sandwich”. Smooth out the wrinkles.

STEP 4 ContinuedQuilt Assembly

4. Use large safety pins to attach all three layers starting in the center making sure to smooth all layers. Another option is to hand baste all 3 layers together by stitching a horizontal line and a vertical line through the center of the quilt sandwich. Baste again diagonally in both directions creating a star eect. This will prevent the layers from shifting while repositioning during the quilting process. NOTE: Do not trim the edges until after the top quilting is complete.

STEP 5Quilt As Desired

STEP 6Quilt Binding using the DOUBLEFOLD FRENCH SEAM METHOD

NOTE: The length of binding required for this quilt is calculated as follows: 68 + 68 + 90 + 90 = 316”. Add an additional 12” to allow for corners and seams totalling 328”. Divide by 40 (40“ is a conservative estimate of the usable width of the fabric) = 8.2. Round up to the next whole number, which is 9 (the number of binding strips required).

1. CUT 9 binding strips 2.5” wide by 40” long (from selvage to selvage, meaning on the straight of grain).

2. ASSEMBLE Join the binding strips with diagonal seams to make one long strip - see diagram d.

3. SEW and TRIM seam allowance to 1/4” - see diagram e.

4. OPEN and PRESS seams - see diagram f.

sewing instructions

STEP 7Attach the Binding

1. Square up the quilt top if necessary leaving the excess back and batting.

2. Fold the full length of the binding strip in half, wrong sides together. Press.

3. Fold the starting end of the binding at a 45 degree angle up making a tail. Press. Starting in the center of one of your quilt sides, align the raw edges of the folded binding with raw edge of the quilt top. Sew the quilt binding through all the layers leaving the beginning tail free. Stop 1/4” from the corner of the quilt - see diagram g. Backstitch, clip threads and remove quilt from the sewing machine.

4. Fold the unsewn end upwards (positioning it so that the right edge is parallel with the next side of the quilt to be bound) creating a diagonal fold. Finger press - see diagram h.

5. Miter the corners by folding the binding down ush with the next raw edge of the quilt top, making a horizontal fold that aligns with the quilt edge. The 45 degree angle should be intact under the fold - see diagram i.

STEP 7 ContinuedAttach the Binding

diag. h diag. i

6. Start sewing again at the top of the horizontal fold. Sew a couple backstitches before continuing down the side of the quilt to the next mitered corner. Treat remaining corners the same way.

9. Refold the binding and align with the raw edge of the quilt top. The length of the binding between the stitching end points should be exactly the correct length needed. Stitch in place.

STEP 8Sew Quilt Binding to Back

1. Carefully remove excess batting and backing by trimming the layers to meet the raw edge created by the quilt binding and quilt top.

2. Fold the binding over the raw edges of the quilt to the back, making sure to cover the seam you used to attach the quilt binding.

3. Hand-stitch the folded edge of the quilt binding to the quilt backing. Fold the corners into neat miters on the front and back. Take a stitch or two in the fold to secure the miters.

7. When sewing the quilt binding to the last side, end the seam about 10” from the starting point of the diagonal and tail. Backstitch. To join the loose ends of the quilt binding, unfold the ending binding strip so it is a single layer. Tuck this opened strip under the beginning diagonal strip and mark or trace the diagonal line onto the bottom binding strip - see diagram j.

8. With right sides together, and at right angles, place the starting strip on top of the ending strip. Align the newly marked line of the ending binding with the diagonal fold of the beginning binding - see diagram k. Pin and sew, as shown. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4”. Press open.
