Sometimes our losses in life continue to give us pain long after the original

event. What comes to mind for you?

Are you willing to begin the healing process by engaging in the biblical practice

of lament?

This week (maybe even this afternoon), take the Essential Practices book off to

a quiet place. Read the story in the Lament lesson. After reading, in prayer ask

God to help you identify losses in your life that continue to give you pain. He

may bring to mind people, health concerns, friendships, opportunities, jobs,

innocence, etc.

Select one item from the list and begin to work the steps discussed today.

Sermon Study Guide (11/05/2017)

Scripture Lesson: Psalm 77

Have you ever felt like the writer of the psalm, “In the day of my trouble I seek the

Lord ...my soul refuses to be comforted”?

What should I do when the pain of a loss won’t go away? _______________

Definition: lament— (noun) a passionate expression of grief or sorrow, a poetic

piece expressing sorrow; (verb) mourn, express one’s grief or

disappointment

Step 1—In prayer, honestly acknowledge your pain to God.

A) Denying or hiding our pain is not helpful. It ________ the grief process.

B) “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, an do not rely on your own insight.

In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your

paths.” (Prov. 3:5-6)

C) “Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is

a refuge for us.” (Ps 62:8)

Step 2—In prayer, acknowledge that you are angry or disappointed with God (or with

yourself or someone else).

A) This step is important because it brings to the front issues that have been

___________ or left untouched in our lives. When we are truthful with

ourselves and with God, our spirit is opened to His _____________

_____________.

B) Many passages in the Bible are expressions of angry, frustration, pain, grief,

and sorrow directed at God or others. We can take courage that expressing these

things is not a _____________ of _____________, but a personal choice to turn

to the Lord _____________________________.
