Who was the explorer that

landed right in our very

backyard?

Christopher Newport sailed for England. He was hired by the Virginia Company of London to journey to

the “New World.”

Newport was hoping to make an English colony in Virginia, discover riches, and find a western sea route to Asia.

Newport and his crew sailed 3 ships (the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery) across the Atlantic Ocean. They arrived at present-day Jamestown in 1607.

After his successful first trip, Newport made four more voyages bringing more people to Jamestown. He also became one of the first men to reach the Fall Line of the James

River.
