    April Issue Deadline 1st March

    Welcome tothe village directory

    Hi everyone,

March not only represents the onset of spring but also brings Mothers Day, this year on the 10th. For my mum it used to be a particularly special month, her birthday was the 7th March and then Mothers Day would usually follow about a week later. So she had two full weeks of non-stop adoration and love poured upon her. Not that the adoration and love should ever stop, its just that with the busy lives we lead, its easy to take our loved ones slightly for granted, until a special day comes along to make us focus on what they mean to us. Although my mum is no longer around, in my heart March will always belong to her, but these days I can share a little of it with her, that is if my son cottons on to the hints that I leave for him, usually he has no idea what day of the week it is, let alone the month and date! So, dont forget your mum this month, all it takes is a big hug and a kiss to let her know how you

feel, although chocolates, fl owers or both are much appreciated too.

I know its too early to be certain but I really hope the worst of the winter weather is now behind us. I cant wait to start spending time in the garden. If your garden is anything like mine its probably looking a bit worse for wear and needs a good dose of TLC. Dont forget, if time is limited, or if its a task youre really not inspired by, youll fi nd plenty of help within these pages. Have a great month.

    TheGarden ShedMarch By Jo Arnell

So the grass is growing again. Thats a good thing because it means the weathers warmed up and a bad thing because it will need cutting more and more often as the season progresses. Mowing and edging the lawn,

like having a haircut or vacuuming a room goes a long way towards making things look tidy and, if you dont know where to start in the garden, cutting the grass is a good place. There is a whole spring regime recommended for keeping the lawn lovely, but I shant be troubling you with it. The garden centres seem to have a myriad of products on sale to improve the lawn I never buy them because I imagine theyll make the grass really healthy and that will make it grow even faster. The only thing I occasionally do is aerate it, or at least the bits that get a lot of wear and tear, as compacted soil deprives the roots of oxygen and will eventually kill it. Grass does like a fair amount of sun. You can buy shady lawn seed, but remember that the type of grass used for shade tends to be fi ner and less hard wearing than a rugged rye grass, so it will never look quite as lush and thick.

We are at the mercy of the weather this month and its tempting after a long winter to rush out on the fi rst sunny day and overdo it, Here are a few things to be getting on with if its not too cold and wet this month:

Watch out for slugs eating tender young shoots. There will be a plague of them due to last years wet weather.

There will also be more weeds, as we couldnt get out to pull them up in all the wet weather.

Prune Dogwoods and willows (which have benefi tted from the wet).

Plant early potatoes, onion sets and summer fl owering bulbs.

    Seasonal DelightsLemon Chicken with Tabbouleh

Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes

This is a great way to turn simple and very economical chicken portions into a delicious Mediterranean-style supper. If you have time, make the tabbouleh a few hours in advance to let the avours fully develop.

Ingredients: 1 lemon, thinly sliced 4 large chicken thigh portions (or

8 small thigh portions) 4 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp clear honey, warmed 225g bulgar wheat (see tip) cucumber, fi nely diced 4 spring onions, trimmed and

fi nely chopped 2 tbsp fresh chopped mint 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander Salt and freshly ground black

    pepper

Tip:Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then fi nely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. Youll fi nd it in most large supermarkets or health food shops.

Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. Push a lemon slice under the skin of each chicken thigh. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken over a medium-high heat until golden brown all over. Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken.

Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 minutes until cooked through.

Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water.

Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over.

Designing your kitchenUsing a designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or per job, and whats included. A much cheaper option is to design it yourself, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Many people choose the middle option of using their kitchen suppliers design and installation service. If youre asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces fl at. Take at least three measurements at fl oor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. If youre using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a fee for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings.

Comparing prices When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what youre buying a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fi ttings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit fl oor and wall fi nishes? What about fi nal decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fi t worktops, sinks, taps and

appliances? Is there a guarantee and after-sales service?

Checking for qualityBudget suppliers will give you machine-made units, whereas luxury ones off er hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. These arent necessarily poor quality, though they will have plant-on doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than in-frame doors, individually made to fi t perfectly inside their frames.

Doors Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are the highest quality. In-frame doors may expand and contract with the humidity. Good suppliers off er an after-sales service to check their fi tting after a few months. Veneered doors are cheaper and easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machine-sprayed, or painted by hand with a brush.

CarcassesTop-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Next-level-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard 18-20mm is a good guide.

HingesPoor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear

so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifi cations), solid brass butts are better. Check whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle.

WorktopsVery cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. High-pressure laminates are more durable than low-pressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, youll be off ered solid wood (at least 4cm thick is best), granite (3cm), man-made solid surfaces (such as Corian) or even glass or concrete.

InstallationA good fi tter can make an average kitchen appear fantastic, whereas poor fi tting will make the most luxurious kitchen look terrible. Consider this if youre planning on doing it yourself. If youre using a fi tter, ask to see examples of their work. When buying an expensive, bespoke kitchen, its wise to use the companys own fi tters.by Katherine Sorrell

Welcome, to Babes In The Wood. My name is Julie and I would like to introduce to you my Nanny Agency and Childcare Consultancy in KENT. Babes In The Wood was born in 2001 in St. Johns Wood, LONDON, when I had my fi rst child. I had worked previously as a childrens nanny for 10 years. So I believed that I was highly skilled in the knowhow and knowledge to off er a successful service to others. I not only know what a nanny has to do, to deliver a fantastic and professional service but I can also relate to the worries and traumas that one can feel when seeking their ideal long term child carer. Children are precious and deserve the time and care when fi nding the perfect match.

So here I have developed a personal agency for all child care requirements. I meet all my families personally, so that I can make a perfect match fi rst time round, causing less disruption to the whole family. On the home visit I off er the opportunity to discuss your requirements fully and any queries with regards to employing a nanny or other child carer but most importantly you get to meet me personally.

I interview all my nannies and child carers personally; I visit child minders at their homes. I

do all the background checks. All the hard work is done for you by me!

Testimonial from Mersham (Jan 2013) Babes In The Wood were fantastic at understanding my slightly unusual work situation and found me child carers who fi tted my requirements perfectly.

Visit my website to see what other satisfi ed clients have to say about my service: www.babesinthewood-ashfordkent-nwlondon.co.uk I look forward to hearing from you. I am more than happy to help. ~ Julie

The residents of the historic village of Wye are looking forward to one of its most prominent landmarks coming back to life after decades of decline. The once grand Kings Head public house has seen many landlords come and go, each attempting to bring back the glory days of the old coaching inn, usually without great success. The present building was built over 140 years ago, although a public house has stood on the site for centuries at the heart of the village. Now, a group of friends have vowed to bring The Kings Head back to life, and catapult it into the 21st century. The four friends - Scott, Sharon, Gordon, and Mark - all residents of neighbouring village Brook, have come together to pool their skills, resources, and fi nances to ensure the new business is not only a fi nancial success, but will bring in much needed footfall and investment to help maintain Wye as one of Kents premier tourism and leisure destinations.

One of the partners, Scott Richardson, said This was once the heart of the village, but hasnt been for some time now and we cant wait to bring this back. Its a beautiful old Victorian coaching house that just needs some love, and bringing back up to date. Husband and wife Sharon and Gordon Thompson, well known localy as the landlords of Brooks Honest Miller, are bringing almost 30 years experience in the pub and hospitality trade to The Kings Head. Speaking amidst the dust of the rennovations, Sharon said were really looking forward to bringing local, seasonal food, using local suppliers to our menu adding that our menu will be a mix of seasonal classics, and great food

from the local area - very much produce from the land. Our head chef has worked in many top London restaurants, and also did a stint at The Five Bells in Brabourne. Well be very chalkboard specials driven, so therell always be something new on the menu.

The ongoing rennovations will see the old bar and restaurant areas united for the fi rst time, combining comfortable lounge seating and formal seating. Mark Lightford who has been on site daily helping to oversee the refurbishment said were bringing the guest accommodation back into use, which has been under-utilised in recent times, and we dont think anyone will miss the acres of woodchip wallpaper and avocado bathroom suites - although the old rooms were full to capacity recently when we sent the old Kings Head off with a bang at New year. We had Pop Idol Gareth Gates join us from his stint in pantomime at Canterburys Marlow Theatre. He DJd right through to midnight, and belted out a few tunes to welcome in 2013, it was a great way to signal the end of an era.

Why not visit us on 2nd March when we will be having a Wye Villagers Day, along with the Wye Farmers Market it will be a great opportunity to sample the very best of Wye.

Making Use of WyeWhilst schools closed across the county, Spring Grove remained open during the recent snow. Just a little preparation beforehand our resident gap students and I salted our hazardously sloping entrance drive and built a uniformed snowman to welcome the children arriving at school ensured that we were ready for another busy week. With

most children present we were able to enjoy a normal timetable but still found time to play in the snow, build sculptures and ambush the teachers. Our extensive games sessions were obviously disrupted but we adapted to the weather and enjoyed our now traditional snowy walk to Wye Crown and give the children a chance to enjoy some stunning views across the county on a chilly but beautiful day.

Our pupils enjoy a busy and broad academic programme but also benefi t from making full use of our rural community. Classes visit the church, the Chinese restaurant and even the pub! We go out to the lifeboat station at Dungeness, we visit castles and the Cathedral in Canterbury. We enjoy visits to local farms and learn about the crops, the animals and environmental issues.

Our musicians have brought tremendous pleasure to the old people at Brambles Old Peoples Home and have been involved in important services at Wye Church. In November, the Year 6 pupils visited and studied the graves of Wye Churchyard, in particular those of soldiers and airmen killed in the two World Wars. Equipped with trowels, forks and brooms, we tidied

the churchyard ready for the Remembrance Service, in which three of our young trumpeters played The Last Post. We were recently surprised and of course delighted that the pupils had been given a special School Community Award by the High Sheriff of Kent, Mike Bax, who has led a campaign to serve our communities by keeping them free of litter.

Education that goes beyond the confi nes of the classroom undoubtedly broadens horizons and encourages children to appreciate their rich, local, rural heritage.

warehouse - the same fl oor size as the O2 Arena in London, and thus one of the largest new buildings in Europe, taller than Sevington Church Spire. This will be seen from all the surrounding areas yet IF plans are passed we will end up with just a huge unimaginative shed!

The hugely increased traffi c will be able to exit onto the bypass, to Junction 10, via new traffi c lights. However, nothing will be done to help the Barrey Road users in the existing plans. There are plans to build part of a new Junction 10A but only the coast bound slip roads. What are the consequences of this for Ashford?

Will these changes make a diff erence to you, if you are caught up in the traffi c chaos? Remember this will be twenty four hour working, every day and night. How will it impact the emergency vehicles from the Hythe Road fi re station and the hospital?

Will all the residents of Ashford be expected to reimburse the developer for the millions spent creating a junction that just feeds more traffi c onto the existing Junction 10?

The development is being sold as supplying jobs for Ashford. But will it? We need quality, skilled jobs that fully value the working population and their potential for long term career development. What are the real quantity and quality of jobs that Ashfords environment is being destroyed for?

Isnt it short-sighted and irresponsible to concrete over increasingly scarce agricultural land which we will need to feed our rapidly expanding population in the years ahead? This looks like Ashfords equivalent of cutting down rainforests!

Why not regenerate the many empty and derelict existing industrial sites around the borough? Is this really the best site for this size of development? Can you imagine any other town

Traffi c queue on A2070 approaching Junction 10

Is this how you see Ashfords Future?

There are several new developments proposed for the area marked, that will feed into the Bad Munstereifel Road. Hundreds more vehicles will be travelling to Junction 10 every day. Will this impact on you?

Have you heard that the powerful multi-national, AXA, want to build a huge new warehouse near Sevington Church and Kent Wool Growers are moving from the town centre to the same site?

If Ashford Councillors agree to this plan, Sevington fi elds will be engulfed by warehouses. The plans show much of the fi elds covered by a single 80,000sqm

    Huge Warehouse Planned For Sevington

wanting this huge shed as its most iconic building? Is this the legacy our Councillors want to leave future generations? Surely Ashford deserves a better deal than this?

These are the questions you need to be aware of. If you have any comments now is the time to make them. Now, while Ashford Borough Councillors are still able to make changes to the plans. Now, not when you are sitting behind a huge queue of trucks! If this scheme is allowed to go forward unopposed we could all end up with a great deal more traffi c being fed into an inadequate road system causing even more mayhem.

Village Alliance is a group of ordinary people living in Ashford and the surrounding villages. We came together to try and help keep residents informed of exactly what the rapid changes being proposed to Ashford and the surrounding area will actually mean to them.

The real impact of the development is not being widely advertised only people a few meters away have been informed but we feel this will impact the whole of Ashford and its surrounding villages forever.

If you want to know more...

Visit the Village Alliance web site and like our Community Facebook page, Village Alliance. Detailed information about these developments and their implications for all of us town and country is found on the Village Alliances website: (www.thevillagealliance.com)

A young ventriloquist is touring, and one night, hes doing a show in a small fi shing town. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes. Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting, Ive heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype blonde women that way? What does the colour of a womans hair have to do with her worth as a human being? Its men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. Its people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general pathetically all in the name of humour! The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologise, and the blonde yells: You stay out of this! Im talking to that little $!*! on your lap.

  • Hang spring cleaning! cries Mole in Kenneth Grahames The Wind in the Willows. The critters are emerging from hibernation, and so are we. Weve picked a selection of the best novels where animals are calling the shots. What better way to welcome in the warmer weather, than with some tales from the riverbank and beyond?

War HorseMichael MorpurgoBased on the true story of a horse named Warrior, War Horse follows the tale of Joey, a young mount who is sold to the cavalry for service in the First World War and the attempts of his previous owner Albert to bring him home safely. Its an amazing story of bravery and friendship, set against the bloodiest of backdrops and you cant help but gallop alongside the intrepid pair.

White FangJack LondonSet in Canada during the gold rush at the end of the 1800s, White Fang is the story of a half dog-half wolf hybrid puppy and his attempts to fi nd his place in the world. Its an epic story of survival, with White Fang struggling against the violent backdrop of the Yukon Territory before hes adopted by American Indian Grey Beaver and attempts to live as a domesticated canine. White Fangs new life is just as brutal, as he fails to be accepted by other young dogs and so reverts to being the lone wolf, detached and isolated in the frozen wastelands.

    Watership DownRichard Adams

Fiver can sense impending doom. Something very bad is coming to the rabbit warren and fl eeing is the only way to save the clan. He and his brother Hazel embark on the journey of a lifetime to fi nd sanctuary at Watership Down. Crammed full of amazing rabbit folklore, myths, legends and even their own language of Lapine, we become totally immersed in Fiver and Hazels world, carried along on this amazing and perilous journey across southern England.

Animal FarmGeorge OrwellOriginally subtitled A Fairy Story, this was Orwells allegory for events leading up to the Russian Revolution. Rebellion is in the air at Manor Farm when the drunken layabout of a farmer, Mr Jones, forgets to feed his animals. Pigs Napoleon and Snowball lead the revolt and bring power to all those on four legs. But in time, the uprising takes an unexpected downturn. Remember: All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than other.

Charlottes WebE.B. WhiteBashful and whimsical Wilbur the Pig is horrifi ed to learn that

hes facing the chop. His human protector, Fern, might not be able to save him all on her own and it looks like its up to the barns resident arachnid to save his bacon. Can Charlotte convince the farmer that Wilbur really is worth hanging onto? Ok, so the clue is in the title but this is a thoroughly charming tale that will have you laying off the sausages, and letting the cobwebs hang around a bit longer, way after youve put the book down.

The Art of Racing in the RainGarth SteinAnother dog has his day now and this time its Enzo who wants to be reincarnated as a human. Enzo already feels human - he watches television and listens carefully to everything his master tells him. Through watching and listening, Enzo has gleaned that his human family is in trouble and he must do everything in his power to fi x them. Heart-warming doesnt come close.
