Although Bemie wasn't having one of his better days, he hung on gamely and kept us within striking distance of our most legitimate competitors. Tom Church took over on leg 2 and immediately began reeling in several of the teams ahead of us. By the end of the leg, Tom had catapulted us into fourth place overall and second in the club division. More importantly, he got us by the Taconic "Killer" B's as well as the Taconic Masters. It's a good thing, too. We'd have never heard the end of it. Don't these guys have any respect? I mean don't they know that the A team is supposed to be faster? You can't blame Bemie, either. Most of us on the A team would have been hard pressed to match the performances of Calidonna and Hermesch on the opening leg. Perennial club champ Kevin Wynne took the baton for leg 3. Feeling good, Kevin again demonstrated why he is in a class by himself as far as our team goes. Kevin ran the fastest leg of the day for any team and placed us in second place overall and first in the club division. In addition, Kevin broke Gary Steinel's Taconic stage record with a 29:07 clocking. At the end of leg 3, we were 3:06 behind Orange County, the open division leaders, :26 ahead of the Hartford Masters, and 1:20 ahead of the Central Park Track Club, our main competition in the club division. Paul Fendler took center stage for leg 4 and found himself dead as a doornail. The only thing that kept him going was that some "old" guy from Hartford TC was breathing down his neck the whole way. What is it with these masters nowadays anyhow? Don't they know they're supposed to be getting slower, not faster? Paul managed to record a new Taconic stage record, breaking Gary Steinel's other long standing record by 11 seconds. Don't be fooled though. Gary's time was run in sunny hot conditions on this completely shadeless leg rather than the cloudy, cool conditions we experienced this year. There is no doubt that Gary's performance is still Taconic s best to date for leg 4. Tom Piazza ran a brilliant leg 5, breaking Luis Guerra's Taconic stage record by 6 seconds as he averaged a 5:24 pace for the 7.3 mile leg. Not only was Tom one of Taconic's stars of the day, it appears that at only 23 years old, he is destined to be one of Taconic's stars of the future. By the end of leg 5, we found ourselves only 1:36 behind open leading Orange County and 3:18 ahead of Central Park. It should be noted, however, the Central Park "wasted" about a minute and a half as they waited for their 5th leg man to "unload" some excess baggage and lace up his running shoes. I guess they were just trying to make it interesting. Incidentally, Hartford Masters were still only 1:29 behind us at this point. THE "A" TEAM by: Paul Fendler Continued on page 3

Relay veteran Luis Guerra took the baton for leg 6 and ran strong as he brought us to within :47 of OrangeCounty. It was on this leg, however, that Central Park began their charge. They had obviously saved the bestfor last as they drew to within 1:44.

Ron Heneid was our man for the tough leg 7. Ron gave it his all as Central Park inched closer. Ironically, itwas former Taconic teammate, Jim Meadows, who brought Central Park to within striking distance. Obviously,Jim's competitive skills were honed to a fine edge due to years of running qualifying races at Lincoln Hall. Notonly did Jim run well, but he had to endure shouts of "Traitor," "Turncoat," "Benedict Arnold," etc. Seriously, though, it's thanks to Jim that the Central Park teams participated in this year's relay. From the perspective ofthe Taconic A team, the participation of CPTC added dramatically to the excitement of the event.

Tommy Neeson ran his heart out on the final leg as he desperately tried to cling on to our ever-diminishing lead.In fact, he ran the second fastest time ever recorded by a Taconic runner for this stage. Tommy made them earnit as it was not until the final downhill into Peekskill that CPTC caught and passed us for the 2 second victory.Tommy, the Taconic A team apologizes for putting you in such as agonizing position. After all, we are allequally responsible.

But then again, who really cares? The whole idea is to run as if your life depended on it then laugh like hell atthe outcome, isn't it? I'd say we did a pretty good job of that.

We can only hope that future relays will be this exciting. On to next year!!

ON OUR "LAST LEGS"REFLECTIONS OF THE ROAD RELAY

by: Helen Gordon

"The Road Relay Challenge" or "The Really Rough Competition" is what TRRC meant to me todayHowdid I feel running in this prestigious event? Proud and nervous!! At first I thought about a regular roadrace (lOK or marathon). All one worries about is a "PR" or finishing the course. So, if on a given dayyou don't run your best, you can give the standard lines: the week before you over/undertrained, pulled amuscle/tendon, mowed the lawn, OR the day before you ate too much, drank to excess, "partiedj too lateOR on race day it was too hot/humid, hills too steep, socks uncomfortable, and the list goes on "adi n fi n i t u m . "

In today's Manhattan to Peekskill Road Relay, one would really like to use some or all of the problemsdetailed above, however, you have the rest of the team depending on your good performance (for yourleg). At this point (race day), we had to be totally prepared. In the week's before we had to arrange ourown water stops, mile markers, split times, and course description (hills, traffic, etc.) In addition, we hadto confront possible PMS (Pre-Motion Sickness?), GI problems (the "runs" before the run), and otherailments. And another important aspect was clothes: team shirts (Taconic) and was it okay to wear black, white or green shorts?

Well, like a test in school: you're glad when it's over no matter how you did, you never feel that youprepared enough or correctly and you compare notes with your peers. Being competitive runners, our testwas done and each team member was pleased or not, for themselves and/or the team. One thing was forcertain. It was great team camaraderie, the rest of the club was extremely supportive, it was a terrificexperience. (I didn't miss the Fairfield/Westchester Half Marathon that day at all!) And, every male clubmember said that we could have gotten into their green shorts (to match the shirts) this day!!

FATHER MOONEY 8 MILE CLASSICJULY 4, 1991

Jim Meadows wins in Vf:17Lori repeats for 12th time!

Lotsa Hoopla! That's the best way to describe the1991 Fourth of July around Lake Mahopac: hundredsof flags, banners, a color guard, a ITO salute toOperation Desert Storm, and, of course, the TRRCroad race.

For the 12th time, TRRC's Lori Jorgensen cruisedin to win the Classic in 48 minutes flat. The timewas :58 off Lori's record setting performance oflast year, and much can be attributed to therather muggy weather. Max Tolson (53:33) placedsecond with Helen Gordon third.

Central Park T. C. 's Jim Meadows (he's still aTaconic, too) reeled off a 44:17 to Tom Church's44:41. Jim's fine performance comes on the heelsof his leading his CPTC teammates to a first placevictory in the Club division of the M-P road relay. Both winners showed no hesitation in stepping upto the microphone to say a few kind words at theawards ceremony: Jim to relate what TRRC meant tohim when he first moved into the area from NorthCarolina, and Lori told of how the Fr. Mooney raceled to her first meeting Rich Mattey - a class actby two of the best people around.

Other notable times: TRRC swept both the mens 20'sand 40's thanks to Rich Lucatuorto (45:03),Stephen Durso (45:30), Charlie Creel ( 46:35, andMasters: Bob Hermesch (45:11), Mike Daley (48:00hPete Corsino (49:05). Taconic's Harold Cargainand Jim Rothwell went 2-3 in the 15-18 division, while Gene Garlepp took the 50's in 51:36 withTRRC exyPrez Dan Caffery third. In the tettle ofthe retirees. Bob Rogan bested Noel Lazarus.Chelsea's room, Laurie Simunek, came through on topof the 30's in a fine 37:32. Christina Spaintoured familar territory to beat visiting TerryValsh (Barbara's daughter) in the 20's. LauraGarraway showed her stuff in winning the 15-18division. TRRC's Frances Tesler, another Mahopaclocal, grabbed the gold in the 50's. And in the60's, Robin Purcell came up with a second place.

Fred Loehfelm did a spectacular job in his firstatten^t at race directing, and all it took was tofollow the guidelines that appeared in this notedpublication's last issue, (see separate story).

DEBBIE SCHRAMM lOKJULY 27,1991

JORGENSEN AND BURDEH IN lOK W

The forecast was rain, but the weather held, andthe temperature was near-perfect. And, forFrancis Burdett it was a near-record 32:34 looperaround Lake Mahopac. Tom Church racked up hissecond consecutive second place with a very fine33:20. Rich Lucatuorto took time off from theTRRC track series to place third in 33:29.

"Ms. Automatic", Lori Jorgensen kicked in with a36:12 to outdistance TRRC s 1991 Club Champion,Kathleen Ford (38:39). Bedford Hill's DawnEnterlein was a mere ten ticks back in third.

Other notable times: Bob Hermesch in besting the40's (5th overall) was also rewarded with a lOKPR of 33:36. The tightly packed 20's group ofRon Herreid, Tommy Neeson and Tom Piazza wereseparated by only 22 seconds: 33:32, 33:49, 33:54.On tte female side: in the 15-19 division, thisyear's Debbie Schramm Scholarship Award winner.Amy Cargain, copped second plxe in 52:08, withLaura Garraway, third. Helen Gordon (42:42)triumphed over Roberta Brill (45:29) in the 40's.Other Taconics capturing awards: Lauren Logantraveled up from NYC to place second over GinaGorman in the 30's. May Chou placed third in the50's. One of TRRC's newest members, Denise Friedlyof Goldens Bridge came third in the 20's in 45:28.

THE FATHER MOONEY RACE REPORTb y F r e d d y L o

The 19th "running" of the Father John P- Mooney 8 MileClassic, on the 4th of July, goes into the TRRC history bookswith many kudos, from runners, neighbors and sponsors alike.

N o w i t ' s m y t u r n .

As a fi rs t t ime race d i rec tor, I found out jus t how muchgoes on behind the scenes. The good news is that you get helpfrom everyone, all you have to do is ask. That was the mostamazing part; it took about 35-40 volunteers to pull this off(not counting the color guard) and it worked like, well clockw o r k , a n d e v e n t h e c l o c k w o r k e d .

TRRC Meeting - June 12

GLADIATOR AT THE RESERVOIRby Deb Yagoda

My mom thinks that a "true story" is by definitionmore interesting than a made-up one. I don't. Not thatthis has anything to do directly with what I am aboutt o w r i t e .

Wel l . The Gladiator decided some t ime last winterthat I should do a marathon, and so, after running amiserable half in Dutchess last year and vowing neverto return, I'm going to do the whole thing. I'm a bit lategetting started on my long runs; that indicates my reluctance, but my work schedule's been tough, and theweather's been brutal... Well. I approached the Reservo i r w i t h more t han t he usua l amoun t o f f ea r andloathing. I was tired. So tired I'd bailed out of my runtwo days earlier after less than two miles. The Gladiatorwas not pleased. So I was determined to do the 15.5today. Stairway to Heaven included. I started out withtwo of my favorite training partners. I thought of oneof my other favorite training partners, unreliable anklesand all, off to the Escarpment Trail run. Like ahemophiliac on a field trip to Transylvania, if you askm e .

Off we went, I promptly dropped off their modestpace, thinking survival. I caught up at the water stops, and actually led for awhile when Nature called one ofmy faster companions. My lead was short-lived; sweetas it was to fantasizes lead dog on the Iditarod Trail, reality overtook me as I was wobbling up the last nastylittle bump in the Hunterbrook loop, flounderingaround for my water bottle. My pals never did tell meif they were going 12 or the longer route, and I didn'tsee them anymore that day. They left behind a trad ofwater bottles, as endearing as love notes, placedconsiderately where I couldn't miss them. After onelong, dry stretch, I came upon one with just a few inchesleft. I gulped it gratefully, thinking it had to be hard forthem to have not finished it.

Two miles to go now. Finished with Stairway. Ormore accurately. Stairway was finished with me. A bigrock, upon which sat: three fat water bottles. I sampledall of them. The bridge leading to the parking area. Thebad news was how much the iron grating would hurtmy feet. The good news was that the grating wasn'telectrified. There were no cars left. But there was a waterbottle nestled against my tire.

This is a true story. Even the part where I drove backto collect the water bottles. Even the part where I gaveone of them to a pair of thirsty runners in theHunterbrook loop. And so, gentle reader, till next time, may your tunes be swift, and may your butt be alwaysahead of the Gladiator's pointy trident.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Linda:

I must correct a glaring error in the July, 1991 issueof Taconic Running Life.

It was reported on page 5 that I ran a 6:45 in thePeekskill Mile Fly. Actually my time was more like8:00. The only way I could do a 6:45 mile is by jumpingoff Mt. Washington.

I do thank the charitable soul that lofted me to suchbarrier heights but I wouldn't want to leave a lastingimproper impression of my capabilities.

Love and peace,J im Hami l ton

Dear TRRC & Howie Bashant:

I would like to let you know about anundubious honor that was not awarded at thisyear's Biathalon. The "Lead Bathing Suit Award",although possibly an oversight, should have beenawarded to the fastest runner of the day, yetthere was no mention of his name at the awardsceremony. Mr. Richard Lucatuorto albeit of thefast feet was floundering in the water when passedby myself and so many others. He was al least 7minutes behind another flounderer (a Mr. ThomasNeeson) who went in second after the run. I thinkRich was deserving of this year's "Lead BathingSuit Award" and I hope that he will get therecognit ion he deserves. Of course he mustunderstand that if he had drowned he would havebeen disqualified and therefore no award would begiven.

Sincerely, Tony GalfanoThe Sinker and previousnon-finisher in the swim.
