Dear Nittany Lion Club Members:

On behalf of Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, our coaches and, most importantly our student-athletes, I would like to thank you for your loyalty and support. The success of our programs is a direct reflection of your financial commitment, providing our student-athletes with the opportunities to succeed in the classroom and in competition.

The self-funding mission and model of Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics relies on no allocation of student tuition or state appropriations. Therefore, private support is a critical component to providing a first-class academic and athletic experience.

Your investment is a key ingredient to maintaining what has evolved into one of America’s strongest and most respected athletics programs. Thanks to the strength of the Nittany Lion Club, we can all stand proud of the values that Intercollegiate Athletics and our University stand for.

We are…Penn State!

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is truly a self-sustaining athletic department, therefore the athletic department does not receive any state or university funding for annual operating expenses.

• Private support is essential: it enables Penn State to provide student-athletes with the best possible experience and the resources they need to succeed athletically and academically.

• Your contribution to the Nittany Lion Club directly supports grant-in-aid, operational support along with academic and medical support for our 800 plus student-athletes.

• Continued financial stability will allow us to maintain the tradition of academic and athletic excellence for our entire 31 sport program.

Cash Donations Most gifts to the Nittany Lion Club are cash donations and it is as easy as writing a check or using your American Express, Discover, Mastercard or Visa. Checks should be made payable to “Penn State University” or visit www.nittanylionclub.com to make your gift online. For information regarding the electronic transfer of funds from your checking or savings account, contact the Nittany Lion Club office at 1-800-NITTANY.

Matching Gifts Many companies will match the contributions of their employees, increasing the value of their personal contribution. These contributions can be applied toward your Nittany Lion Club annual gift. For more information visit www.matching.psu.edu. Note: Employee gifts must be received by February 1, 2012. The employer match must also be received by February 1, 2012 in order to receive ticket and parking benefits. If gifts are not received by this date, the donor is responsible for the difference. This may require making a gift earlier in the fiscal year so that the company match is received by February 1, 2012.

Gifts of Securities/Planned & Estate Gifts Donating appreciated securities or documenting planned and estate gifts provides donors with significant tax benefits. A Nittany Lion Club representative will be happy to meet with you or your financial adviser to discuss bequests, life income gifts, retirement assets, living trusts, life insurance, real estate and other planned giving options that may provide tax relief and membership benefits. Note: Planned & estate gifts can not be used to cover Nittany Lion Club required donations for ticket and parking privileges.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHow many members are there in the NLC? In 2011, the Nittany Lion Club had over 23,000 members, making it the largest intercollegiate athletics booster organization in the country.

Is my contribution to the NLC tax deductible? Yes, gifts to Intercollegiate Athletics and Penn State are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as charitable contributions. A full deduction may be taken when no tangible benefits are received for the gift. Benefits, such as tickets and priority points are 80% deductible under IRS regulations. Please consult your tax advisor for detailed information.

How is my gift to the NLC used? Gifts to the Nittany Lion Club provide funding for the full number of scholarships provided by Intercollegiate Athletics. NLC gifts also provide program support for areas such as the Morgan Academic Support Center and Penn State Center for Sports Medicine and capital projects in support of facilities.

Why is it required to be a NLC member in order to get football tickets? Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is self-sufficient, receiving no state or University funding. The support of the program through NLC contributions enables the Nittany Lions to compete at the highest level on the field and in the classroom for championships on a national

level. The demand for benefits such as tickets and parking passes creates the need for a fair system for which these benefits can be fairly distributed based on NLC contributions and priority points.

What is the priority point system? The NLC utilizes a priority point system to help fairly allocate benefits. Donors receive points based on their contributions, consecutive years of membership and alumni affiliations. NLC priority points rewards both longevity and gifting amounts when establishing a donor’s ranking. With this system, the NLC can rank each donor regardless of giving category and prioritize benefits such as bowl game and away game tickets.

How do I keep my football season tickets and parking privileges from year to year? The NLC membership level that is required for your current seats and parking under the new seat equity plan for 2011 is the baseline gift required in order to maintain the same location from year to year. Please refer to the football priority seating diagram on page 8.

My company has a matching gift program. What do I need to do to ensure their match is applied to my annual contribution? Please include your company’s matching gift documentation with your annual contribution application or renewal form. Employee gifts and employee matches must be received by February 1, 2012 in order to receive

10

ticket and parking benefits. If gifts are not received by this date, the donor will still earn NLC priority points for the match. For more information on matching gifts, visit www.matching.psu.edu.

My friend tells me that his reserved football parking is grandfathered. What does this mean? Beginning in 2011, the NLC membership benefits offered for the first time in many years the ability to purchase multiple parking passes. Donors who contributed at the honorary coach level since 2001 and purchased two reserved car passes consistently can keep that benefit at the honorary coach level. Also, donors who contributed at the honorary coach level in 2009 and purchased a reserved RV pass may maintain this RV benefit at the honorary coach level.

How do I improve my ticket and reserved parking location? The 2012 seat selection process will take place in the spring of 2012. NLC members will have a chance to upgrade or relocate their seats utilizing an online seating application. Members wishing to improve their parking location can do so by calling the NLC and being placed on the upgrade list (based on priority points) which is reviewed annually after the renewal process ends in May.

The Nittany Lion Club is excited to offer members (athletes,

parents, fans, friends & family of a particular sport, etc.) the

opportunity to make a sports specific annual gift and receive NLC

level recognition and points. This unique opportunity allows a

NLC member:

• To designate a portion, or all of their annual NLC gift to the

sport(s) of their choice.

• A sports specific gift is a great way to support the team

of your choice. It also provides our coaches with additional

funding to address specific needs of their program, not

already accounted for in their budgets.

The only NLC benefits that would Not be provided are the

privilege to purchase season tickets and parking for Penn State

Football and Basketball (men’s and women’s). The privilege

to purchase season tickets and parking would still require an

unrestricted gift (Levi Lamb Fund) to the Nittany Lion Club.

NOTE: Former University Park varsity athletes who give to a

specific sport or the Levi Lamb Fund, would continue to receive

all NLC benefits including tickets and parking privileges.

Sports Specific Giving Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics has instituted the Varsity “S” Club with energy and desire to connect with former student-athletes. The Varsity “S” Club exists to create and enhance a culture whereby former Nittany Lion letter winners are active members of Intercollegiate Athletics, while supporting current student-athletes. The Varsity “S” Club is comprised of former varsity student-athletes, managers, mascots, cheerleaders and dance team members who understand the commitment and spirit that it takes to wear the Blue and White and to be called a Nittany Lion student-athlete. The Varsity “S” Club seeks to provide former student-athletes the opportunity to foster and maintain relationships across different sports, generations and geographical locations. Our prestigious group of former student-athletes provides a sense of heritage for current Nittany Lion student-athletes.

As a member of the Varsity “S” Club, individuals will share camaraderie among a diverse group of remarkable people. Whether your collegiate athletic career ended last season, or 70 years ago, you are forever a Nittany Lion and connected to the Penn State family. Together, we are....Penn State!

Major Giving OpportunitiesCapital/Facility Projects Athletic facilities are a home away from home for student-athletes.

Top-notch facilities that rival those at other Big Ten and nationally

competitive programs demonstrate to students and families that Penn

State is committed to providing the very best for our participants.

Penn State’s baseball, basketball, football, softball and wrestling

facilities are among the nation’s finest. However, too many of our teams

are dealing with aging structures and technology.

We are hoping to secure funding through naming opportunities for

the following projects:

• Indoor Aquatics Complex

• Indoor Tennis Complex

• Lacrosse Complex

• Soccer Facility

• Field Hockey Complex

• Track & Field Complex

• Penn State Golf Courses

Scholarship Endowments Penn State is committed to offering the full number of scholarships

authorized by the NCAA for each of our varsity programs. Each year,

however, mounting tuition costs place greater pressures on the athletic

department. Intercollegiate Athletics currently funds more than $10

million annually for student-athlete scholarships. In such a climate,

establishing endowed scholarships is one of our highest priorities.

Donors can endow a full athletic scholarship for $750,000 or a

specific position in a sport (e.g., a point guard) with a gift of $300,000,

with scholarship funds reserved for student-athletes who play that

particular position. With a gift of $50,000, donors can establish a named

scholarship to support the team of their choice.

One of the most effective ways to support student-athletes is through

the Trustee Matching Scholarship program, in which the University

matches five percent of the total pledge or gift immediately. When the

pledge is fully paid, another five percent of the endowment’s market value

is provided each year, in perpetuity.

Any scholarship endowment can bear your name, as a way showing

your support for generations of student-athletes. You can also choose to

honor a family member, a favorite coach or athlete, or anyone who has

shared your love of Penn State sports.

14Note: All major gift commitments can be payable over a five (5) year period and provide donors with the option to receive NLC priority points and benefits.

Endowed Coaching Positions Behind each of our student-athletes, whether in team or individual sports, stands

an important figure: the coach. Coaches are among the most valuable members of

any athletic program, and at Penn State, where success is measured by more than

just won-loss records, this is particularly true. Our coaches, as mentors, teachers,

and role models, have challenged their teams to succeed on the field and in the

classroom. Penn State student-athletes are notable for their intelligence, poise, and

character, and the program owes this reputation—The Penn State Way—to the

coaches who lead our teams by example every day.

Endowments to name and support coaching positions provide well-deserved

recognition to these men and women, as well as invaluable financial support. Income

from coaching endowments can be used for a variety of purposes: it can fund salary

adjustments, thus helping Penn State to recruit and retain top coaching talent; it can

supply coaches with discretionary funds that they can target to the areas of greatest

need or opportunity; and it can provide Intercollegiate Athletics with greater financial

flexibility across the entire athletic program.

Giving Levels:

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH: $5 MILLION*

HEAD BASKETBALL COACH, MEN’S OR WOMEN’S: $2 MILLION EACH

OTHER HEAD COACHES: $1 MILLION EACH*

ASSISTANT COACHES: $500,000 EACH

*The Head Coach positions for Football, Wrestling & Women’s Volleyball have been reserved

Program Endowments College is a time of growth and learning for all students, but particularly for

student-athletes, who manage competing priorities, train their bodies and minds,

and succeed in more pressure-filled situations than their peers. Student-athletes

arrive on campus young and talented. When they leave, they are adults—skilled,

poised, and ready to succeed in sports, in their careers, and in their lives.

In addition to their coaches, trainers, professors, and mentors, student-athletes

rely on the Morgan Academic Support Center, the Penn State Center for Sports

Medicine and our strength and conditioning staff to ensure that they stay fit mentally

as well as physically. Endowments to support these programs will provide crucial

support to maintain the high quality of service provided by these valuable University

resources.

15

Early Activation Donors can see their endowment activated immediately by providing

Intercollegiate Athletics with annual funds equal to their endowment’s eventual

annual yield ($2,500 minimum). This can be utilized for both active pledges

and estate gifts. It provides donors with the option to receive NLC giving level

recognition, benefits and priority points. This process, called “early activation,”

allows donors to see their commitment make an immediate impact for Penn

State.

Page 18: 2012 NLC Donor Guide

Donor Recognition As a Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics benefactor, you can use your giving to achieve personal goals, enhance your financial security, and help provide for the future of our athletics program. You can provide our teams and student-athletes with much-needed financial assistance through outright gifts of cash, securities, stock, or other property. Outright gifts have an immediate impact and are used to support our program’s current needs. In addition to outright gifts, planned giving (including bequests, charitable gift annuities, and trusts) can make charitable giving part of your total financial plan. State and federal laws encourage philanthropy by conferring tax advantages on charitable gifts. Thus, planned giving helps you receive the maximum tax benefits,

enables you to make a greater gift than otherwise thought possible, and benefits your family and heirs.

RECOGNITION SOCIETIES The following recognition societies at Penn State acknowledge the extraordinary generosity of our donors: President’s Club—Established in 1991, The Penn State President’s Club recognizes individuals whose annual support provides critical resources for programs across the University. In recognition of Penn State’s proud heritage and traditions, members of the President’s Club are recognized by gift levels named for prominent former Presidents of the University. Edwin E. Sparks Circle: $5,000 Ralph D. Hetzel Circle: $2,500 - $4,999 Milton S. Eisenhower Circle: $1,500 - $2,499 **Individuals who are 35 years of age and younger will be offered membership in the Eisenhower Circle. Membership is based on the age of the younger spouse/partner.

Mount Nittany Society—cumulative gifts of $250,000 or more

Laurel Circle—cumulative gifts of $1,000,000 or more

Elm Circle—cumulative gifts of $5,000,000 or more

Atherton Society—planned gifts of any size As a member of one of these societies, you may receive benefits that include publications, event invitations, and commemorative gifts. But the greatest satisfaction is the knowledge that your support is making a difference.

www.nittanylionclub.comDonor Recognition

One of the important cornerstones of the Penn State athletic program is the loyalty and enthusiasm of Nittany Lion fans who have demonstrated by their interest in our teams, and their attendance at events, that they are without equal. We must be cautious, however, not to let enthusiasm for athletics lead us into conflict with the very specific rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association or the Big Ten Conference. The NCAA definition of “a representative of the University’s athletics interests” is very broad and encompasses many if not all of the people who are regular attendees at our sports events. If you fall into this category, there are a number of activities regarding contact with student-athletes and athletic recruits that could put the University at risk for NCAA sanctions. The University is charged with the responsibility to exercise “institutional control” of its athletics interests and we are committed to maintaining the kind of responsible program in which all of us take such great pride. The NCAA constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for ensuring that individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interest comply with all applicable NCAA rules. Penn State is grateful for all you have done to make this one of the model programs in the nation. We know, based on our contacts with alumni, faculty and friends across the Commonwealth and the country, that you share our earnest ambition for athletic success within the rules. For more information, please visit the compliance tab at www.GoPSUsports.com or call the athletic compliance office at 814-863-8048.
