2017 ADVERTISING GUIDEPainting by: Matt Smith
A LifestyLe. A MoveMent. A CoMMunity.
Plein air painting is not just about painting outdoors. It’s a movement, a lifestyle made up of tens of thousands of painters, collectors, galleries, and enthusiasts. It’s a community, and PleinAir magazine is at the center of
it all. The movement is so strong, PleinAir is the number one-selling* representational art magazine nationally. In addition, PleinAir is the only magazine represented at nearly every large and small plein air event in the country.
PleinAir is the only magazine in the world focused exclusively on the outdoor painting movement, with an audience made up of collectors who frequently visit art shows to watch their favorite painters in action, and who collect vigorously. These same collectors visit and purchase from galleries and from artists.
In addition to collectors, the growing PleinAir audience includes artists. Unlike most art magazines, which tend to concentrate on either collectors or artists, PleinAir is an ecosystem of both artists and the collectors who follow them, attend events, visit galleries, and interact with artists. PleinAir is focused on exposing more people to the joys of collecting and creating landscape and studio paintings.
*According to Barnes & Noble stores, PleinAir is the No. 4-selling art magazine nationally. In the total art category, the top two are photography magazines and the third is a millennial-focused magazine. PleinAir outsells all other art magazines nationally.
A high percentage of PleinAir readers are established in their professional careers and devote their spare time to painting and to attending plein air events (many of which are hosted by PleinAir magazine), traveling
to workshops, or traveling simply to paint while seeing the world. There is also a high percentage of affluent retired readers who are able to attend more events and spend more time painting. These painter-collectors tend to spend heavily on plein air travel, equipment, and materials, and often purchase lots of artwork, including demo paintings at workshops.
For decades we’ve been told artists have no money, and though that may sometimes be true, many plein air artists are an exception. Plein air painting has become a lifestyle with a strong appeal to those who are seeking more from their lives, who want to tap their creativity, meet and paint with friends, and travel to exotic places to paint.
the Painter-Collector
The PleinAir network can offer you a variety of advertising opportunities, sponsorships, and strategic and tactical applications to assist you in meeting your goals.
PleinAir MagazineNow in its eighth year, PleinAir is published every other month. It’s a
full-color glossy publication filled with content about the plein air movement, painting techniques, living and historical artists, and plein
air events and travel. It is the only magazine devoted 100 percent to the plein air lifestyle. The magazine also publishes a digital edition with each issue, which offers additional expanded content not available in the print edition.
A network of options to Accomplish your Marketing Goals
The magazine is edited by legendary art editor M. Stephen Doherty, who
joined PleinAir in 2011 and previously spent 31 years as editor at American Artist magazine. Steve interviews artists and writes numerous articles in each issue; also he is an accomplished plein air painter and author of art books.
PleinAir is published by Streamline Publishing, which also publishes Fine Art Connoisseur magazine and many online publications. Streamline is headed by publisher Eric Rhoads, who is an avid plein air painter and a leader in the plein air and art communities.
PleinAir Today Designed to reflect day-
to-day activities in the plein air movement, PleinAir Today is a
weekly e-mail newsletter that covers collecting, painting, events, and artists as an extension of the magazine, allowing advertisers to highlight artworks, events, and products. The newsletter is edited by Bob Bahr, who spent seven years with American Artist magazine and joined PleinAir Today in 2013. Bob is also a writer for PleinAir magazine.
outdoorPainter.com OutdoorPainter.com and PleinAirCollector.com
have been combined to provide a single site for artists and collectors alike. The center of activity for PleinAir magazine online, the updated OutdoorPainter.com site offers a community environment where ideas are shared, workshops and events are posted, directory listings are supplied, and products are reviewed. It also presents the ideal online venue where collectors may discover hidden treasures, peruse artist profiles, and preview upcoming plein air events and specific works of art.
“I gave a gallery owner in Carmel your contact information — I was telling her how
much traffic the banner ads were driving to my website. I also saw the digital ad of a gallery
in South Pasadena, which I had referred to you, so it looks like she’s taking advantage
of your advertising opportunities.”
– Larry Cannon, Artist
“I want you to know I very much feel that my digital ad investment is worth this class of
presentation and visibility.”
– Rick Delanty, Artist
the PLein Air Convention & exPo
the Plein Air Convention & expoThe world’s largest gathering of plein air painters, this
annual event attracts about a thousand artists from all over the world for five days of demonstrations on four stages, covering oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and urban sketching. There are lectures, special workshops, and critiques, and everyone goes out together to paint each day — it’s a spectacle to see a thousand people painting together. Our giant Expo Hall features vendors of art supplies, framing, lighting, easels, and paint, along with travel opportunities, workshops, and much more. Plus there are major sponsorship opportunities available.
The 2017 Plein Air Convention & Expo will be held in San Diego, April 23–28.
the Publisher’s invitational eventsEach year publisher Eric Rhoads holds events for about 100-
125 painters, each of which is simply a week of friendship and painting. Hundreds of artists have attended the Invitationals — now in their seventh year — and a high percentage attend year after year. Events in 2017 include New Zealand, the Adirondacks, and Fall Color Week in Maine. Each event also offers sponsorship and sampling opportunities.
PleinAir is the #1 magazine about representational
painting in Barnes & Noble. PleinAir magazine is also available
in Canada at more than 100 Chapters and Indigo retailers as well as
independent bookstores throughout the United Kingdom.

“I have been advertising in PleinAir for about five years — the same period in which my career as an artist has really taken off. It is not a coincidence. My association with the magazine has boosted my name recognition greatly. At the same time it helps me to see what is happening in the field. An art career is built on good quality work and name recognition. I can concentrate on the first part, because I have PleinAir helping me with the second.”
