For the past few weeks, the Vuwani area has been plagued by violent protests against Vuwani’s being taken away from the Makhado Municipality and being incorporated into a new municipality as decided by the municipal demarcation board. By the end of last week, 24 schools had been torched in the area. On Monday this week, another school was targeted by protesters, who set alight a classroom at Mawela Primary School at Serene Village. Computers, a photocopier and books were damaged in the fire. Since the unrest had broken out, several people were arrested and charged with public violence, malicious damage to property and arson. Among those arrested for the violence is a councillor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Gideon Tshavhuyo. This led to widespread speculation as to who might be behind the violent protest action in the Vuwani area. Last Wednesday, thousands of pamphlets were distributed in the Louis Trichardt and Vuwani area by an anonymous source. The pamphlets lashed out at the “leaders” responsible for the mayhem at Vuwani. “The people behind this situation are known but feared … These leaders are not leading us to future (sic) but serving their own interests … These leaders are behind this violence,” the pam- phlet reads. The author(s) of the pamphlet then go on to point fingers at prominent people such as the mayor of Makhado and Chief Masia, accusing them of financing the violence. Names of a list of people allegedly responsible for the “torching of schools” are mentioned, as well as the names of more people allegedly supplying money to fuel the violence. The Vuwani issue has made headlines for the past few weeks and reverberated in Parliament two weeks ago when the Minister of Cooperative Gov- ernance and Traditional Affairs, Des Van Rooyen, told the National Assembly that the decision to amalgamate Vuwani with parts of the Malamulele municipality had been made on the basis of form- ing municipalities that were economically viable‚ sustainable and able to deliver services to citizens. But this “led to unhappiness within the Vuwani community‚ which is largely Venda-speaking,” he said. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP, Floyd Shivambu, blamed the protest action on internal African National Congress (ANC) battles. “It’s mostly intra-ANC squabbles because the mayor of Makhado is from Vuwani, so when he is demarcated into the new municipality, Malamulele, he realises that it’s not going to be a possibility of him becoming a mayor again,” he said. In the strongly worded press release issued by the Makhado Municipality on 19 May, the munic- ipality states that Mayor Mutavhatsindi would like to set the record straight on the insinuations that he was instigating violence in Vuwani and the surrounding areas “as he feared that he would lose his position as mayor by the establishment of a new municipality in Vhembe.” The municipality states that, as a disciplined cadre of the ANC, Mutavhat- sindi knows that his term of office ends on 3 August 2016. “He has been appointed for a particular term and he cannot defend that, as the ANC can deploy him anywhere at any time,” the press release reads. Mutavhatsindi is quoted as saying: “I vehemently deny any malicious alle- gations levelled against me that I am responsible for the spate of vio- lence and the burning of schools. Those faceless people purporting to be saints were hell-bent on assassinating my character for their own selfish ends. I challenge these cowards to come up in the open and open a case against me with the law enforcement agency.” (Contd o P2) Makhado municipal mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi. Mayor denies role in Vuwani unrestDuring the course of this week, Makhado Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi vehemently denied allegations that he was responsible for fuelling the violent protests and the burning of schools in the Vuwani area.

For the past few weeks, the Vuwani area has been plagued by violent protests against Vuwani’s being taken away from the Makhado Municipality and being incorporated into a new municipality as decided by the municipal demarcation board. By the end of last week, 24 schools had been torched in the area. This led to widespread speculation as to who might be behind the violent protest action in the Vuwani area.

The pamphlets lashed out at the “leaders” responsible for the mayhem at Vuwani. “The people behind this situation are known but feared … These leaders are not leading us to future (sic) but serving their own interests …

cluster spokesperson W/O Ked-ibone Mabatha said on Wednes-day that the police were still not aware of any official charges being laid against Mayor Mu-tavhatsindi regarding the allega-tions contained in the pamphlet that he is one of the high-profile people inciting the violence. Mabatha also said that he was not aware of any charges being laid by Mayor Mutavhatsindi against the anonymous people responsible for distributing the

pamphlet. In total, more than 20 people

were arrested in connection with the violent protests in Vuwani. Many of these, including Cllr Tshavhuyo and a teacher, Mr Edzisani Muthathe, appeared in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday to bring a formal bail application. The case was, however, postponed until Tuesday this week, while they remained in custody. On Tuesday, a total of 18 accused appeared in the Malamulele Court to bring a formal bail

application. Their applications could once again not be finalised as a result of technical problems in court, according to the po-lice’s provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto. Their case was then postponed until Wednes-day. By the time of our going to press, the outcome of their bail application was not yet known. It was also not known how many people arrested for the Vuwani unrest had appeared in the Thohoyandou Court as Otto said that they were still awaiting feedback.

The investigations into the Mara escape case revealed that two members of the police who were escorting the suspect from court in March this year were negligent.

The police’s provincial communications officer, Capt Ndidzulafhi Nelufule, said that the police could not reveal the members’ identities to the public, since an internal disciplinary hearing was ongoing. “The allegations that there is a staff short-

age and shortage of resources such as leg shackles, handcuffs and police vans at the police station are unfounded,” Capt Nelufule said. “Every police officer is equipped with a pair of handcuffs and there’s no such thing as a shortage of handcuffs at Mara police station.”

A 25-year-old suspect, David Rhaetsi, escaped from police custody when he was being escorted back to the cells at Mara Police Station.

The circumstances around the escape of Rhaetsi still remain vague. He has not been rearrested.

Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site was a hive of activity last Friday, as the park celebrated Interna-tional Museum Day as well as Africa month.

The theme of this year’s event was Museums and Cultural Land-scapes.

It also served as a platform to raise public awareness on the role

museums played in the develop-ment of society, said its spokes-woman, Ms Divhani Maremba. She said that Africa Day was also celebrated annually to acknowl-edge the progress that Africans had made, “while reflecting upon the common challenges faced in a global environment.”

The event was marked by Af-rican attire, dances and beautiful melodies performed by the Ma-pungubwe choir. SANparks’ cul-

tural and heritage manager, Mr Chrispen Chauke, also addressed the guests on the importance of the celebrations and said muse-ums helped people to transfer knowledge from one generation to another. “We are the first Af-rican Kingdom in South Africa and this knowledge we need to transfer to our children and we can only do that if the rich history is preserved and conserved in museums,” he said.

Supreme Court rules in favour of rhino horn tradeBy Isabel Venter

The court case to have the seven-year ban on selling rhino horn lifted, has come to an end and it is now legal to trade in rhino horn within South Africa.

Two rhino breeders, Messrs Johan Kru-ger and John Hume, managed to have the ban overturned last November, following a case in the Pretoria High Court (HC). The ban, however, remained in force, pending an appeal by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to the HC.

Musina-based attorney Mr Hennie Erwee represented Kruger and Hume and predicted that none of the DEA’s appeals would be successful.

Sure enough, last Friday the Supreme Court of Appeal refused the DEA’s leave to appeal against the HC’s decision, thereby allowing rhino horns to be sold legally again for the fi rst time since Feb-ruary 2009.

The decision means that, within South

Africa, the buying and selling of rhino horn is legal, subject to the obtaining of permits. It is, however, still illegal for rhino owners to trade with the horns in-ternationally in terms of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites).

According to Erwee, the DEA’s appli-cation was rejected because it failed to bring new legal arguments to the table. In addition, the fi rst ruling was made by a full bench of judges, about which the HC said that it believed no other court would come to a different conclusion.

During the fi rst court ruling, the HC judges agreed with Hume and Kruger that the moratorium had seemingly fuelled the dramatic increase in rhino poaching since 2009. Erwee pointed out, interest-ingly enough, that according to the latest poaching statistics, the most rhinos were poached in the Kruger National Park.

Several conservation groups, such as the World Wildlife Organisation, feel

that the latest court decision could fan a further round of stockpiling and promote the illegal smuggling of local rhino horn to China and other Eastern countries for traditional oriental medicine.

In the meantime, provided that the DEA does not approach the Constitutional Court, local rhino owners can start apply-ing for legal permits to store and sell their rhino horns.

Owners will, however, still have to wait for CITES to lift the international ban, and that decision will probably be made during September during their next sitting. As for now, Erwee said he suspected that the DEA would drag their feet with the issuing of permits to rhino owners until then.

“But we certainly feel like this is a big victory for us, that two farmers won this massive court battle with the Minister and her department. In the long run, we feel that the sale of rhino horn will have a positive effect on rhino conservation,” said Erwee.

As the dry winter months are upon the region, the news that the Makhado Fire Station is once again functional serves to warm the hearts of residents.

Two months ago, the Zoutpansberger reported on the station after it became known that they had no fi re trucks avail-able to deal with emergencies. Their last available truck (photo) was damaged beyond repair in an accident on Friday, 18 March. While on duty near the Vuwani Fire Training Centre and Fire Station, the driver of the fi re truck allegedly swerved to avoid running over a pedestrian cross-ing the road. The truck left the road and overturned. The only other fi re truck the Makhado station owns has been in the repair shop for well over a year after its gearbox reportedly broke down.

About two weeks ago, the Makhado station’s fl eet was supplemented with a fi re truck from the Malamulele station.

This means that the Makhado Station once again has a fully function fi re truck. The other truck has yet to be repaired. As far as the newspaper was able to determine, the faulty gearbox is in such a state that it should rather be replaced in its entirety than just repaired.

In the meantime, the newspaper tried again to follow up with the Vhembe Dis-trict Municipality (VDM) in the hope of fi nally getting some answers from them. In particular, the newspaper again enquired about a promise the VDM had made last year to provide new emergency vehicles to the Makhado fi re station and others in the region. At our time of our going to press, the VDM spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, had yet to respond.

Staat laat vaar saak in Le Grange-moordverhoor

By Kaizer Nengovhela

When Marcus Nndateni Mulaudzi (43) was arrested by the police on 26 February 2006, he initially thought it was part of a surreal-istic experience. “I thought it was a joke and I didn’t even apply for bail (straight away), because I thought the judge will release me.” More than a decade later he was still waiting in jail, fi ghting to prove his innocence.

On 5 May this year the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein issued an order, setting aside Mulaudzi’s conviction and related sentence on a charge of murder. The three judges, Ther-on, Petse and Willis, reached the unanimous conclusion that Mulaudzi had been wrongfully convicted of murder. The order was delivered last Friday (20th) and after more than 10 years in jail, Mulaudzi was free to continue with his life.

The sad episode in Mulaudzi’s life started in July 2005 when a well-known school prin-cipal and councillor, Mr Shavhani Ramusethe-li (56), was gunned down at this house at Tshavhalovhedzi near the Siloam hospital. Ac-cording to an early police report, Mr Ramusetheli arrived home after work and parked his car in the garage. A few minutes later he was attacked by two men while closing the garage door. They hit him with a sharp object on the head and then shot him. He died instantly.

When the deceased’s mother went out to investigate the cause of the noise in the garage, she was hit in the face and she sus-tained minor injuries. The suspects then fl ed on foot.

Initially the police arrested two suspects, but they were released after being questioned. Following more investi-gations, four suspects were arrested and the case eventually made its way to the Thohoyandou High Court. On 22 August 2006, Mulaudzi, along with Tshimangadzo Leroy Mushweu, Piet Mudzugu and Samuel Ntshaveni Ndwambi, was convicted of murder and robbery. Mulaudzi was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and 10 years’ imprisonment in respect of the robbery.

Mulaudzi subsequently applied for leave to appeal, but this application was refused by Judge Hetisani. The long process of taking his case directly to the Supreme Court of Appeal then started.

In his judgment, Judge X M Petse found that the High Court had erred by relying too much on the evidence of the fi rst accused, Mushweu. Mushweu implicated Mulaudzi in the murder, but apart from this testimony, very little evidence points to his involvement. The court found that Mushweu was untruthful in his evidence and tried to exculpate himself. “But it (High Court) then proceeded to uncritically accept his (Mush-weu’s) evidence that incriminated the appellant,” Judge Petze said.

Judge Petze also rejected the High Court’s dismissal of Mulaudzi’s evidence. “In my view, there is nothing inherently improbable about the appellant’s version to warrant its rejection as false beyond reasonable doubt,” the judge said.

The Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling was wonderful news for Mulaudzi, who had been a resident at the Sinthumule/Kutama maximum security prison for the past ten years. For the fi rst time he could speak freely about the ordeal that robbed him of such a big part of his life.

“During our trial, the Thohoyandou High Court discarded the second accused, Piet Mud-zugu’s testimony that I was not involved. An eyewitness, Ramusetheli’s mother, also testifi ed in court that she (only) saw two people, but the court continued sentencing me,” he said.

“I don’t know why Mushweu mentioned my name as one of the suspects, because I don’t even know the deceased, Shavhani Ramusetheli’s home,” he said. According to Mulaudzi, he only met Mushweu twice before the incident at Sha-yandima when he was visiting his girlfriend. “I was just a mere taxi driver doing routine rides be-tween Thohoyandou and Shayandima,” he said.

According to Mulaudzi, the incident ruined his life and his relationship with his wife and family members. “I was 32 years old when it happened and my wife left with my son because of my arrest. My other son stopped attending school,” he said. “I lost everything and now have to start afresh.”

Mulaudzi said life in prison had been very stressful. He said it was especially traumatic when he made eye contact with Mushweu in prison and he often found himself crying

in the cells. “I was afraid that some in-mates would kill me, because no one likes a murderer. I have learnt the hard way that one can die for something you did

not do,” he said.Mulaudzi’s brother believed in his innocence

and helped him to lodge an appeal to the Supreme Court in Bloemfontein. “I couldn’t believe it when I stepped out of jail. My family is happy also. My mother, Joyce Mulaudzi, was ill be-cause of my arrest,” he said.

“When I was in jail, I was trained in motor me-chanics, bricklaying and woodwork. I will decide whether to work as a motor mechanic or other trades,” he said. Mulaudzi mentioned that much has changed in the world since the prison doors slammed shut behind him almost 11 years ago. “During my arrest, there were only three malls in Thohoyandou, namely Mvusuludzo, Mutsindo and Venda Plaza. They built the Phangami Mall while I was in prison. Stadiums were built for the 2010 World Cup while I was locked up in jail,” he added. “The worst part is that I don’t know how to use social network sites. What I know is how to send ‘Please call me’ messages only.”

In spite of everything, Mulaudzi has not lost all hope. “The Lord has been with me since my tribulations started and I am happy that He has delivered me from the jaws of evil. I will never stop praising Him because He has saved me. I never had and will never take part in destroying life, because I know that it is a wonderful gift from God,” he said.

Mulaudzi was represented by Adv MJ Mpshe (SC) in the case and the attorneys were Mvundle-la & Associates from Thohoyandou.

By Isabel Venter

The rural area of Vuwani made both national and international news headlines after violent protest action led to the burning down of 24 schools.

Recently, the non-government organisation Section 27, seeking to influence and use the law to protect human rights, visited some of the affected schools in the area. They described the violence that led to the destruction of the schools as devastating. Section 27 felt that the community’s actions had severely compromised exam preparation, as well as the future of thousands of learners. They felt so strongly about the devastation that they compiled

a full report on it.In some schools, Section 27 found, records of

admissions and pupils’ results have been lost. The effects of this will be felt for years to come. Even if learning resumes swiftly and new buildings are built, the crisis in Vuwani has dealt a destructive blow to an already struggling system.

What makes Section 27’s report interesting to read, is their view of events beyond the immediate crisis of the burnt-down schools. What is impera-tive, however, is to look at the context of the matter. Section 27 feels that media reports placed the crisis in Vuwani in a vacuum, thereby simplifying the problem. “Such reporting does not contribute to addressing the broader systemic issues. Oversim-

plifying the matter fails to force both the citizenry and the government to engage with creative solu-tions to respond not only to the immediate crisis, but the more deeply rooted problems,” the Section 27 report reads.

In this report, decisions about demarcation are not merely about demarcation, but they concern issues loaded with the hopes and disappointments of communities that have often been failed by their municipalities. The Municipal Demarcation Board’s decision to have the Bavenda community in the Vyeboom area in Vuwani included in a new municipality concerns every woman who is still forced to walk kilometres to fetch water. It affects every person standing in a queue while waiting for medicine that is rarely available, and every child learning in a classroom without the necessary educational tools at hand.

The Vhembe district, where Vuwani is located, is home to 1 023 ordinary public schools, accom-modating approximately 410 000 pupils. Vhembe was the highest-performing district in the National Senior Certificate results in the province in 2014 and 2015.

Section 27 represents 31 schools in Vhembe, four of which were affected by the strike. Of those four, two were burnt down and vandalised: Tshinavhe and Vhafamadi. Tshinavhe Secondary School had good sanitation and received new classrooms in 2015, and the school did not have any problems with infrastructure or furniture before the protest action started.

Sadly, however, this is not the only challenge that Vhembe schools face. Section 27 further points out that basic education is far from the quality education that Vhembe students are entitled to. They found that, in the 2016 Limpopo provincial budget for education, a shortage of 41 000 toilets existed, of which more than eight of 10 were pit toilets that needed to be replaced. In addition, this budget noted that a staggering shortage of more than 10 000 classrooms existed across the province.

Two weeks ago, Vuwani was declared a disaster area, which allows for funds to be released to be-gin rebuilding schools and providing alternative,

interim classrooms. However, as Section 27 points out in its report, the main concern is that the money could be diverted from schools with pre-existing urgent infrastructure requirements. The Minister of Basic Education, in her budget speech on 10 May, reported that the estimated damage was R720 million. “In a province where schools are already struggling due to financial restraints, mismanage-ment and lack of service delivery, it is a daunting task to comprehend how resources must be allo-cated to ensure that all those in desperate need are catered for,” it is stated in the report.

Tourism

Matswale Construction recently handed over the newly completed tourism centre to Musina Municipality.

This comes after the council resolved that the old office site had to be vacated to make way for businesses as Musina prepares to become a city in the near future. The arrangement was that the developers would carry all the costs related to the relocation of the centre. The new office is situated next to the N1, just after the off-ramp to Bergview.

The manager responsible for town planning at Musina Municipality, Mr Musiwalo Mphephu, says he is happy that the building adheres to all require-ments as per the required legislation. The developer spent R600 000 to construct the art centre, which took three months to complete. The scope of work in the new centre includes a kitchen, ablution fa-cilities, a display area, an office, a boardroom and a reception area. During the construction period, 28 formerly un-employed members of the local community were provided with job opportunities.

When receiving the centre from the con-structors, Cllr Sewani Kaunda said that the office would play a meaningful role in pro-moting tourism in the Musina municipal area. “Tourism plays a very important role in the economic development of any government. We are happy that our tour-

ists will now have a modern infrastructure where they will be able to get information about Musina and the surrounding areas with ease. That is one of the reasons why we had to build a new building that is modern and user friendly to our people.”

Kaunda thanked the constructors for doing high-quality work in a very short space of time. “It is through their commitment and hard work that we have this positive end result. The fact that this building is user friendly for disabled people goes a long way in showing that our government cares about its people. We will surely take good care of and maintain the building at all times.” Represent-ing the constructors, Mr Chris van der Berg stated that it was a pleasure for the company to contribute to the economic development of Musina. “The fact that we created jobs through the construction of the tourism office is a true reflection that we also have the love of this town at heart.”

Border town boasts new tourism info centre

Cllr Sewani Kaunda receives the keys of the newly constructed tourism centre from Mr Chris van der Berg of Matswale Construction.

Representatives from Musina Municipality and Matswale Construction pose in front of the newly constructed tourism centre shortly after the handing-over ceremony.

With winter upon us, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) anticipates that blood stocks will fall below the de-sired level required for meeting daily demand.

To ensure that a sufficient supply of blood remains avail-able for recipients affected by different medical conditions, the SANBS must collect 3000 units of blood every day. Each unit of blood could save three lives. “In addition to hiding away from the blistering cold, donor numbers usually slump over this period because schools close over the holiday period and that is where many blood drives take place. Colds and flu are other reasons

for donors’ being unable to donate blood,” says SANBS communications manager Va-nessa Raju.

According to the SANBS, high-school learners are a crucial group of donors. Nationally, says the SANBS, teenagers aged 16 to 19 constitute 21% of SANBS’ total active donor base, which is currently over 430 000. They have taken the bold step to join the many men and women who go out of their way to donate blood and lifetimes that can be lived to the fullest. “These young people are truly exemplary South Africans and while they are away from school to enjoy a well-de-served break, we could run into

some shortages, which will put our ability to serve the public under pressure,” says Raju.

SANBS urges all donors to honour their donation schedule and encourage their friends, fam-ily and colleagues to join them and become regular donors if they meet the basic requirements. “Our doors are open to members of the public who either want to start donating or simply have questions about the donation pro-cess, which might seem compli-cated and daunting for those who have never before considered giving blood,” says Raju.

For more information on how to become a blood donor, visit www.sanbs.org.

Warm up your veins and give blood

As part of preserving a clean environment, employees from Musina Municipality and local community members embarked on a clean-up campaign in Ward 5 a fortnight ago.

The campaign started in Nancefield Extension 8, opposite the boys shelter of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The principle of teach them young was highlighted, when young children from the nearby Shanduka Day Care Cen-tre, accompanied by Principal Brenda Ndou, also joined the campaign.

Before the actual campaign started, local ward councillor Ms Nkele Milanzi emphasized the im-portance of keeping the environment clean. “We urge our community members not to litter, but instead use the skip bins provided by the munici-pality to dispose of waste. Unattended waste causes a bad smell, which contaminates oxygen and it also attract flies and rats. Let us keep our environment

clean because it has many benefits for the future generations. Leaving waste unattended has many disadvantages, including driving investors away from our town.” The manager of waste manage-ment, parks and recreation in the Musina Munici-pality, Ms Rendani Kutama, said that the campaign formed part of the municipality’s initiative to keep Musina clean. “We see it as necessary to have these types of campaigns timeously, because some of our community members are living in unclean surroundings. We also want our people to know the importance of waste and how to manage it.”

One of the community members who took part in the campaign, Mt Lufuno Matsa, said that being part of the campaign made him happy because he was contributing to making Musina a better place to stay. “I encourage other community members to participate in future clean-up campaigns as it has many benefits for our society.”

The clean-up campaign in Ward 5 of Musina Municipality was a huge success.

The region’s budding young cycling stars can start entering for the popular KFC Kids Race as part of the annual Kremetart Cycling weekend.

The cycling weekend is one of the region’s biggest annual sporting events, coming up on 4 and 5 June.

Saturday will see cyclists from across South Af-rica take part in the gruelling but extremely popular 175km stage road race, as well as a 70km race. The weekend will draw to a close on Sunday with the hosting of the Kremetart XCO. High School Louis Trichardt’s Leeupark will play host to Saturday’s programme, while Komatiland plantation plays host to the XCO on Sunday.

The race organisers have not, however, forgotten about the youngsters. The kids race, sponsored by KFC, the Soutpansberg Cycling Club, Ladies Circle 4 and Soutpansberg Youth Cycling Development, will once again form part of the programme on 4 June. Youngsters can participate in six different

age groups, namely a 60m ride for 2- to 3-year-olds and a 100m ride for both the 4- to 5-year-olds and 6- to 7-year-olds (with an entry fee of R50 per cyclist for all three races), as well as a two-, three- and four-lap race for the U/10s, U/12s and U/14s respectively. For the last three races, the entry fee is R100 per cyclist.

Youngsters who want to test their mettle can register to compete on the day of the race from 08:00 until 12:00, as per race. The six races, from youngest to oldest, will start at 11:30, 12:00, 12:30, 14:00, 14:30 and 15:00 respectively.

Medals will be handed out to all race fi nishers, as well as bonus prizes for mini XCO riders. Cash prizes for both boys and girls will be handed out for fi rst- to fi fth-place winners. There is also a R1 000 cash prize up for grabs for the school or pre-school with the most entries. But don’t wait too long to enter as only the fi rst 250 entries will receive goody bags.

Kids will again be part of annual Kremetart action

083 297 6925 of stuur ‘n e-pos

aan haar by [email protected].

Dalk dink u ook so.

dróóm nie, my liewe vriendin!

Maar partymaal is drome wragtig net so tasbaar. So werklik.

“Nee man, Ventertjie vertel my nou die dag ‘n ding.

Miskien moet jy dalk kyk of sy nie sal belangstel in iets gesonds soos jou slaaiblaar of tamatie nie?”

Hierdie strate is Saterdag gesluit

man gewees.

Foto’s verskaf.

18 ZOUTPANSBERGER, 27 MAY 2016

By Isabel Venter

Local cycling star Kombo Bere of Louis Tric-hardt will soon get the chance to compare his skills to those of cyclists at international level.

Last week, this local cyclist received his official invite to represent Zimbabwe in the upcoming World MTB Championships as part of their mountain biking team. The world championships is set to take place at the Nove Mestro na Morave in the Czech Republic from 28 June until 3 July. It was not an easy feat as cyclists can participate by invitation only, after their UCI (world ranking) points have been scrutinized.

“I will represent Africa, not merely Zimbabwe or South Africa,” said the Grade 12 pupil of Louis Trichardt High School. “It is one of the greatest honours to get to represent your province and country at the highest level,” he added.

Not many know this about Kombo, but he was actually born in Zimbabwe. Shortly after his birth, his family came to South Africa and settled in Cape Town. His father is a professor at the University of Venda, and his mother is a stay-at-home mom who looks after his younger brother.

During 2013, the family relocated to Louis Trichardt. It was in this time, at the age of 15, that Kombo’s natural talent for cycling was discovered, and ever since then Kombo has dominated the local cycling scene, clinching various podium places.

Apart from local accolades, Kombo also boasts other victories, such as being second overall during the Three Towers Stage Race in 2014, Limpopo U/18 mountain and road-bike champion (in the same

Kombo on his way to World Champs

year) and the 2015 U/18 Limpopo Champion for XCO mountain-bike and half-marathon racing.

Being selected to par-ticipate in the upcoming world championships as part a national team is certainly a dream come true for Kombo. One of his goals is to be able to participate in the 2020 World Olympic Games.

But how does he pre-pare for all this?

“Hard work, and then some more hard work,” was the simple answer from Kombo.

Apart from balancing a heavily loaded school cur r icu lum, Kombo also follows a special-ly formulated training programme compiled by the South African Sport Institute. This en-tails two days a week in the school’s fitness centre with Felix Malan to strengthen his core.

A big part of his exer-cise programme is par-ticipating in local races. One such a race will be the upcoming Kremetart 175km one-day stage race. “Believe it or not, but the Kremetart will help Kombo’s fitness peak, so that he will be

able to perform his best during the champion-ships,” explained mentor and fellow trainer Stanley Thompson.

Kombo will cycle in the Kremetart as part of the Limpopo Tac-Pulse Team, the first ever local pro-cycling team. After this, he will focus on final-izing last-minute details for his trip to Nove Mestro na Morave, for which he has a part of the funds nec-essary. But help and assistance are always welcome from local businesses and sponsors. Stanley can be contacted at Tel 082 493 3897 for more information on this.
