Fourth Grade students across the district are now trained in rainfall tracking and will re-port rainfall totals daily through the Com-munity Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS). Troy Kimmel, a CoCoRaHS Coordinator, Senior Lecturer at University of Texas at Austin, and correspon-dent for the Ranch Radio Group, recently visited all four KISD elementary schools to present students with rain gauges and pro-vide training on rainfall measurement.

During the visit, Kimmel explained why tracking rainfall is important, even on days it doesn’t rain. He incorporated a math les-son in showing the students how to add up totals if it rains more than the gauge can hold.

Students will log on daily to the CoCoRaHS website to report rainfall totals. Anyone in the nation can then see that Starkey, Daniels, Nimitz and Tally are official rainfall reporting locations.

Tally Flash Mob Highlights R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Tally Elementary 3rd Graders kicked off the 3rd six weeks’ char-acter trait of Respect with a sur-prise FLASH Mob Dance during a recent six weeks award assem-bly. When the hit song “Respect” by Aretha Franklin began play-ing, the entire 3rd Grade class, dressed in yellow, stood and per-formed a choreographed dance.

The students chose a flash mob dance to introduce the character trait because it would be memo-rable and fun. The 3rd grade team is asking all students to wear yel-low every Thursday from now through the end of the six weeks (December 20th) as a remind-er to always show RESPECT.

Students in Hollis Uecker’s 5th grade Social Studies class-es at Starkey Elementary col-lected old, broken, unwanted cell phones for two weeks be-fore and after Veteran’s Day. The collection was for the na-tional program, Cell Phones for Soldiers which recycles old phone parts and uses the money to purchase call-ing card minutes for soldiers overseas. The program was originally started by two stu-dents who heard a news story

about soldiers with high phone bills when deployed overseas. The students decid-ed that they wanted to help, and started the worthy organization. Starkey collected more than 140 phones this year. The Cell Phones for Soldiers organization collects phones year round. For more information, visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.

Dr. Dan Troxell, Superintendent, has been named Chair of the 2013-2014 University Interscho-lastic League Legislative Council. Troxell previously was the Chair of the UIL Legislative Council Standing Committee on Aca-demics for the last several years.

The University Interscholastic League was created by The Uni-versity of Texas at Austin to pro-vide leadership and guidance to public school debate and athlet-ic teachers. Since 1910, the UIL has grown into the largest in-ter-school organization of its kind in the world. The UIL continues to operate as part of the Univer-sity of Texas, under the auspices of the Vice President for Diversi-ty & Community Engagement.

“The UIL provides immeasur-able academic, athletic, musical and extra-curricular opportu-nities for students state-wide,” said Troxell. “I’m honored to bring my experience and pas-sion for the UIL organization to the position of chairman. This is a tremendous honor not only for me, but for Kerrville ISD and the Kerrville community.”

Tom Daniels Elementary re-cently cut the ribbon to official-ly open a new school track. The track was paid for by the school’s PTO and cost approximate-ly $8,000. The PTO used funds raised from last year’s Spring Fling, the school’s annual car-nival held each April. Students had the chance to walk a few laps before enjoying snow cones pro-vided by PTO. The Kerrville ISD maintenance department assist-ed with the installation of the quarter-mile track. Students are utilizing the track in the mornings as part of the Mustang Milers walking group. Stu-dents receive a reward for every 60 miles they walk. Way to get healthy Daniels!

Starkey Holds Kid’s Cafe Cooking Competition

Starkey Elementary recent-ly held its first Annual Kid’s Cafe Cooking Competition. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade were encouraged to take a standard cold salad recipe and alter it slightly to make it unique. Judges were looking for healthy recipes that were orig-inal, easy to prepare, healthy, kid friendly, and eye-pleasing. Ingredients for the salads were provided free by the PTO.

KISD Six-Weeks Highlights 4

Veteran’s Day Celebrated Across the DistrictOn November 11, campuses across Kerrville ISD held flag ceremonies, hosted receptions, and made cards for local Veterans. Here is a peek at campus events that took place in honor of our heroes.

Boy Scout Pack 60 conducted the flag raising ceremony at Nimitz. From left to right: Gabriel Torres, Kristian Torres, Lupe Torres, Clayton Gillen and Pack Leader Julian Torres.

Hal Peterson Middle School hosted a reception for local veterans. Veteran Gary Noller spoke to students in the library during the reception.

John Moreno, USAF, Retired, celebrates Veteran’s Day with a high-five from Early Childhood student Seth Venzor from Elizabeth White’s classroom.

TX-20063rd Air Force Junior ROTC members Juan Palacios, Dimitri Lopez, Samuel Pankratz and Sandra Vasquez conduct a flag lowering ceremony at Tivy High School.

Veteran’s Day is a learning opportunity for Kerrville ISD students. It is a chance for us to educate students about Veteran’s Day and why we honor these heroes.

It is also a great opportunity to engage local veterans by inviting them to flag raising ceremonies and receptions in our schools. Finally, giving students the opportunity to shake hands with veterans and listen to them speak teaches

our students how to respect and honor these important people.
