• Late penalty of 2 points per day for assignments– Days we do not meet COUNT!!

• Makeup work when absent– Have 5 days ( days we do not meet count ) for classwork

and labs– Have 3 days for quizzes and tests

Page 3: New Six Weeks

New Six Weeks• Will not check notebooks any more

• Assign few homework problems each class– Online venue still a possibility– Will discuss the following class period– May have time at the end of class ( USE IT!! )

• Will have open notes quizzes ( 1-2 times per week )

Page 4: New Six Weeks

Suggestions on Notetaking• Label with date– Draw a line between dates to save paper

• Label Bellwork and Notes

• Label Homework, Demos, Other Classwork– Not necessarily notes but are important

09/24/12Relative Motion - Bellwork

In your own words:

Define RELATIVE MOTION

Page 6: New Six Weeks

09/24/12 Relative Motion - Bellwork

RELATIVE MOTION – Motion of one object with respect to another that is moving or stationary

Page 7: New Six Weeks

WE WILL BEGIN TAKING NOTES NOW

Page 8: New Six Weeks

Examples of Relative Motion

• With respect to the ground/earth

• Boat/Swimmer crossing a swiftly moving stream– Can you travel directly from one bank to another?

• Someone walking on a train or a plane (in motion)– Does the speed/velocity of the vehicle matter?

Page 9: New Six Weeks

Examples of Relative Motion

• With respect to the ground/earth

• Boat/Swimmer crossing a swiftly moving stream– Can you travel directly from one bank to another?– Have to move at an angle ( upstream ) to account for

stream current

• Someone walking on a train or a plane (in motion)– Does the speed/velocity of the vehicle matter?– Yes (if we want overall motion with respect to ground)

Page 10: New Six Weeks

Relative Motion - 1D ( Page 71 )The speed of the passenger with respect to the ground depends on the relative directions of the passenger’s and train’s speeds:

Page 11: New Six Weeks

Active Demonstration• Need two volunteers

• One stands still, other moves away (say, at 1m/s)

• Is there any difference between a reference made to the ground and stationary person?

Page 12: New Six Weeks

Active Demonstration• Need two volunteers

• One stands still, other moves away (say at 1 m/s)

• Is there any difference between a reference made to the ground and stationary person?

• NO

Page 13: New Six Weeks

Active Demonstration• Need two other volunteers

• Both move in same direction ( at 1 m/s )

• Is there any difference between a reference made to the ground and person at left?

Page 14: New Six Weeks

Active Demonstration• Need two other volunteers

• Both move in same direction ( say at 1 m/s )

• Is there any difference between a reference made to the ground and person at left?

• YES

Page 15: New Six Weeks

Active Demonstration• Need two other volunteers

• Both move in opposite directions ( at 1 m/s )

• Is there any difference between a reference made to the ground and person at left?

Page 16: New Six Weeks

• Both move in opposite directions ( at 1 m/s )

• Is there any difference between a reference made to the ground and person at left?

• YES

Relative Motion – 2D ( Page 72 )

Passenger relative to ground = passenger-train + train-ground
