BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Third Sunday of Advent
December 14, 2014 First Reading: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11 Isaiah describes the joy and salvation which will accompany the coming of Christ. He compares the plants which spring from a garden to the justice that will spring from all nations.. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 Paul reminds the Thessalonians to constantly ready themselves for Christ’s arrival. He tells them to “avoid any semblance of evil” so that they may be found irreproachable when Jesus does arrive.. Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28 John explains that he is only a messenger to the people for one more powerful than himself. John stresses to them that they must make a path for the one so powerful that he is not fit to unfasten the strap of his sandal.. Consider/Reflect: On this Sunday, traditionally known as Advent’s joyful Sunday, the scripture readings are filled with talk about rejoicing; indeed, in places they seem quite insistent that we rejoice. Paul tells the Thessalonians not only that they must rejoice, but also that they must “rejoice always” and give thanks in all circumstances. This seems like a tall order. After all, isn’t joy an emotion that is beyond anyone’s power to command? But perhaps the joy spoken about in the scriptures is not simply the emotion that arises unbidden in us, but rather a disposition that we cultivate deliberately by acknowledging God’s goodness in all the circumstances of our lives. When we bring joy to others, especially when we do not feel particularly joyful ourselves, we are like a mirror that reflects God’s joy in Creation. We are not the light, but bear witness to the light. Yet even as we bear witness to God’s joy, we come to share in it ourselves, caught up in what we reflect. Is my life one that is characterized by joy? What can I do to cultivate joy in my life? **************************************************

The Respect Life Corner
The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets: the 3rd Thursday of each month
in the Faith Formation Center @ 1:30 PM Mother Theresa of India once spoke about the abortions occurring around the world. She reminded her listeners about the sacredness of the child in the womb by reminding them about a simple New Testament story : "When Mary, awaiting the birth of Jesus, visited Elizabeth who would become the mother of John the Baptist, the unborn baby jumped for joy in Elizabeth's womb. He recognized the Prince of Peace; he recognized that Christ had come to bring the good news for you and for me. And as if that was not enough --it was not enough to become man -- Jesus died on the cross to show greater love. He died for YOU and for ME, and He insisted that we love one another as He loves each of us. Love as I have loved you. (John 13:34. How can we love God whom we do not see and not our neighbor whom we do see? This kind of love is something we can and should do - it is a gift from God to be able to share our love with others. Let us keep that joy of loving Jesus in our hearts, and share that joy with all we come in touch with. We have no reason not to be happy because we have Christ with us, Christ in our hearts, Christ in the poor that we meet, Christ in the smile that we give and also receive." We definitely meet the love of Jesus in THE MOST SCARED PLACE OF ALL - THE WOMB OF OUR MOTHER. Please stop now and say a quick prayer for a young woman who is considering an abortion that she will find the love and compassion of Jesus in her heart and choose life for her baby. Adoption is always an option. PRAISE GOD!

HEALTH TIP OF THE MONTH
Guidelines for Proper Disposal
of Medications from the N.J. Dept. of Environmental Protection
Over the counter and prescription medications should never be disposed of down the drain or toilet, they may end up in our drinking water. Proper disposal in trash promotes healthy water & prevents accidental poisoning or intentional abuse.
Four Steps for proper disposal:
1. Keep medicine in the original container. Mark out personal information on prescription bottles.
2. Mix liquid medicine with coffee grounds, cat litter or dirt. Dilute or crush pills & mix with water, then add coffee grounds, cat litter or dirt.
3. Place bottles in an opaque container, like a yogurt container, and secure the lid; or wrap in a dark colored plastic bag.
4. Hide the container in the trash. DO NOT RECYCLE.
