Yeoval Central School Term 1 Week 3

I extended a warm welcome to our eleven kindergarten students and their parents last Wednesday. We are excited about having the number of students in Kindergarten and new parents to our school. The new students starting school are: Reece McGlashan, Joshua Mylan, Jacob Job, Joshua McClure, Cooper Williams, Caleb McClure, Tyrone Antaw, Elke Bishop, Luke Walters, Johnathon Taylor, Tegan Jeffery. During the holidays the classroom had new carpet and blinds installed ready for their first day. IMPORTANT All parents would have received a letter about the Priority Schools Program (PSP) application for funding to support students in our school. Previous to PSP, assistance for funding at YCS was created by National Partnership Program. As a result of our National Partnership funding over the past three years (2009 ‐2012), all students in our school have had the opportunity to be involved in our “Reading to Learn” literacy initiative. It has raised the student’s skill level and standard in reading, writing and language.

Mrs O’Brien is now working each Thursday supporting students with who require learning assistance (STLA). We have se‐lected groups of students from 2012 class assessments and NAPLAN test results to assist them each day learning literacy skills. Our School Leaders Induction Ceremony will be held in our school hall on 21st Febru‐ary commencing at 10:00 am. All parents and friends are welcome to attend. The next P&C meeting will be held on 14 February at the uniform shop commencing at 7:30. All parents are invited to attend. New parents should attend to meet other parents. Our P&C had a successful 2011 raising money for resources used by our students. It is important that all students in our school comply with the following school rules: We ask that parents support the following rules and discuss them with your child:

Electronic Devises – mobile phones need not be brought to school. Par‐ents may contact students by ringing our office. No tolerance in the use of mobile phone applies. I Pods may be brought to school and used in class when permission is given by the teacher.

Chewing gum, cans of soft drink and aerosol cans are banned.

School Uniform is to be worn daily. A note is required if uniform cannot be worn.

Lunch passes are required if a student is going home for lunch. Students are not allowed to go to the Billabong for lunch (lunch order forms are available at the office.

Also National Partnership funding has enabled the school to have extra quali‐fied staff in teaching positions, create student extension groups to complete special projects (Climate Clever, Animals on Bikes, landscaping, photography and school performances) and establish an extra primary classroom. Our school is now in a position to intro‐duce students to a new Numeracy pro‐gram (Maths Matters), language program (L3) for Years K/1 and extension projects for Years 2‐12. To do this we need all parents’ assistance to complete a PSP survey (9‐13 March). We plan to advertise this initiative exten‐sively to ensure our application is ac‐cepted. Congratulations Brittney Smith, Grant Iles, MacKenzie Tremain, Lachlan Blatch, Caley Becker, Natasha Austin, Andrew Foster, Harrison Blatch, Kaitlyn Butler and Courtney Cusack for being elected on our Student Representative Council (SRC) to support student events and ac‐tivity in our school. Their first duty is to organise the Year 7 welcome on Wednes‐day (8th February) at the pool in sport time. The next event will be on Valen‐tine’s Day (14th February). Both days are a MUFTI Day for students. Congratulations to our elected secondary and primary Sporting House Captains. Macarthur: Natasha Austin, Caley Becker, Rebecca Vickers, & Jacob Stubbs. Farrer: Tamara Lees, Grant Iles, Taleah Van Kemenade & Lincoln Monk. Paterson: Brittney Smith, Andrew Fos‐ter, Shanai Butler & Blake Cameron These students will lead their house to the school swimming carnival on Friday (10th February).

KIDZ QUIZ The Quiz is for students to test their general knowledge. All students are invited to complete the quiz and hand it in at the office by Thursday each week by 3.20 pm.

Yes, it’s Valentines Day soon and our SRC wants to help you share the love. On Tuesday 14 February we will be holding a mufti day where we are encouraging students to dress up in the colours of love. There will be a gold coin donation for this privilege.

Our hard working SRC will also be selling heart shaped cookies at a dollar each which the SRC ‘cupids’ will deliver. All proceeds will go towards our World Vision sponsor child. PRIMARY ASSEMBLY There will be no Primary assembly this week due to the swimming carnival. YCS SWIMMING CARNIVAL Yeoval Central School’s swimming carnival will be held this Friday 10th February at the Yeoval Pool. Students will arrive at school at normal time and then march to the pool when assembled in house groups. Students are to bring $1.00 pool entry if they do not hold a season ticket, swimmers, towel, water, hat and sunscreen. A canteen will be operating on the day for stu‐dents to purchase recess and lunch if they wish. Students are to wear their house colours: Farrer‐Green, Paterson‐Blue, Macarthur‐Red. Afternoon buses will pick up students from the pool.


Senior Excursion to Charles Sturt University Orange and Ten Pin Bowling

On Thursday 2nd February Years 11 and 12 went to Charles Sturt University in Orange for a conducted tour of the university. Unfortunately it rained all the time we were there but the university supplied umbrellas. The students were shown through the different styles of accommodation, lecture rooms and specific areas. They were the first students to be in the 7 million dollar Physiotherapy building and look at the up to date facilities for students to train as Physiotherapists. They also visited the dental building and saw how students train to be a dentist. They also visited the library, the gym, entertain‐ment facilities and the eating facilities. After the university tour, we went to Orange ten pin bowling. The students played one game and they enjoyed the close competition between themselves. We enjoyed lunch there and then came home. The purpose of the day was for students to get together and enjoy each other’s company and particu‐larly for the new students to get to know the other students away from the school setting. Everyone had an enjoyable time and I would like to thank Mr Cluness for assisting me on the day.
