ASCE Charles Pankow Foundation Annual Architectural Engineering Student CompetitionThanks to a generous grant of the Charles Pankow Foundation, AEI established in 2009-2010 an annual architectural engineering student competition (www.aeicompetition.org). This year’s competition will challenge students to address the design issues for a new Contemporary Art Museum located in San Francisco, California. The proposed project site is located at the intersection of Moraga Avenue and Montgomery Street. The competition has been designed to reflect the Pankow goals: 1) To improve the quality, efficiency and value of large buildings by advancing innovations in structural components and systems that can be codified; and 2) To improve the performance of building design and construction teams by advancing integration, collaboration, communication, and efficiency through innovative new tools and technologies, and by advancing new means and methods for project team practices. The finalist teams will present their designs to a prestigious jury of leading experts in each of the categories: structural system design; mechanical systems design; electrical systems design; building integration design; and innovative construction management and construction methods focused on integrated design teams and design/build delivery. The event will be recorded and broadcast live over the Internet (see the photo and video galleries of the 2010 final at http://content.asce.org/studentcompetition/photogallery.html and http://content.asce.org/studentcompetition/2010webcast.html ). The winners will be announced at the Awards Luncheon on Friday, April 1.

One of the country’s top seaports and the commercial heart of the Bay Area, Oakland has it all: great weather, world-class arts and entertainment, top-flight restaurants and hotels.Oakland is rich in cultural heritage. The area was once the home of the Ohlone Indians and later the heart of 44,000-acre Peralta rancho, established through a Spanish land grant. Oakland was the western terminus of the first transcontinental railroad and a refuge after the 1906 earthquake. During both world wars, the city was an important base for defense contractors; now it’s a haven for high tech and the arts and the home to a growing movement of culinary pioneers. Tucked between the waters of San Francisco Bay and the verdant coastal hills, Oakland is the Bay Area’s true temperate zone. Everyone loves the year-round vacation weather where temperatures hovers between 50 - 60 in the winter and spring and remain in the 70’s throughout the summer and fall. Oakland’s proximity to San Francisco makes it an ideal location for the AEI 2011 Conference. Nearby points of interest include:

• Old Oakland (Victorian Neighborhood) • Oakland Museum of California • Lake Merritt • McAfee Coliseum/Oracle Arena • Chabot Space & Science Museum • Jack London Square • Oakland Chinatown• Downtown San Francisco • Oakland Zoo

The AEI 2011 Conference would like to thank the following companies for their commitment to sponsoring and exhibiting.
