Shout Out from Western Middle Principal Greg Holland Congratulations to Ms. Dana Wheeler, Visual Arts teacher at Western Middle! Ms. Wheeler earned a Sponsor Recognition Award for her contribution to the 2016 International Ocean Awareness Student Contest, sponsored by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs (Bow Seat). Mrs. Wheeler was selected based on nominations from her students and will receive a $750 cash award! The 2016 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest challenged students to create visual art, poetry, prose, or film around the theme of “Making Meaning out of Ocean Pollution” to communicate the connections between human activities and our oceans’ deteriorating health. Students who entered the Contest were required to enlist the support of an adult sponsor. After submitting their entries, students were encouraged to nominate sponsors who helped to change their lives and the world for the better. Nearly 4,000 middle and high schoolers worldwide have participated in the Ocean Awareness Student Contest since its inception 5 years ago. Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs is a Boston-based nonprofit whose mission is to empower the next generation of ocean caretakers through art, science, and advocacy. Shout Out from Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher/Librarian

Goin’ Global! Those Seabees at Smith have kicked off their second year as a global school by inviting the Zuzu Acrobats from Kenya to perform for them! The Smith Elementary PTO Global Education Committee sponsored the performance. The gentlemen had a lot of amazing energy and talent! Our students and staff were mesmerized by the stunts they shared with the crowd. The acrobats got the students in the act as well as some of our staff members. Both groups got to see how low they could go during the Limbo.

Shout Out from E. M. Yoder Roberta Powell and Barbara Hestetune

E.M. Yoder now has a “Buddy Bench,” thanks to the Hawfields Cadette Girl Scout Troop 02188 who constructed this customized bench! The “Buddy Bench” is a place for any child who finds themselves without a playmate at recess. That child can go sit on the bench and wait for a friend. When another child sees someone sitting on the

bench, they go over to talk to them and invite them to play. The “Buddy Bench” is a creation of a young boy who wanted to include others at his school. The bench is located in an enclosed area of the playground. This is a fantastic way to promote kindness and caring. A big THANK YOU to Troop 02188! Pictured in the photograph and representing Troop 02188 – Left, Brianna Patterson (Hawfields Middle) and Karla Posey (Woodlawn).
