Shout Out from B E Jordan Elementary James Shuler, Technology What better way to show what you've learned about Jamestown than to build it? You may have heard of Minecraft or may already be familiar with it. It's very popular among today's youth. Minecraft is a building game that gives students creative freedom to build what they want using many different kinds of blocks. We have been using the Education version of the game, MinecraftEDU, for student projects. It lets teachers monitor what the students are building, saying, and provides overall control of the environment.

Fifth grade students in Mrs. East's class learned about the early life of colonists in Jamestown fort. They researched the design of the fort including defenses, building types, roles of the townspeople, and daily challenges they

faced. Students spent time drawing out a map and labeling it with the features such as church, bulwarks, town hall, barracks, and Governor's house. Once the research was done and their plans were made, students broke into Building Teams. There were teams devoted to the wall, the ships, each of the buildings, and additional details such as crops. They came into the computer lab and sat with their team, working together as a class to build Jamestown fort in MinecraftEDU based on what they've learned.

  • ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOLS AROUND OUR SCHOOLS SHOUT OUTS Apr 28, 2017

It was a challenge, requiring a lot of collaboration and clear, positive communication between groups! Students discovered that their first design needed improvement. For example, the walls were built too high and the bulwarks were a bit too modern for the time period. Some of the boats weren't symmetrical and needed to be rebuilt. These design struggles were a great learning opportunity. I was thrilled to be able to work with the fifth graders on this project!

As we move towards becoming a STEAM school, we hope to plan more activities like this. We saw 100% engagement with all the students as they worked together to make this happen! Please enjoy looking at the photos of their work as well as the tour video created by two of the students. A QR code is provided if you want to scan that and watch it on a phone or tablet.

Shout Out for AYLA from Alamance Chamber On Friday, April 21, seventh and eighth grade students involved in the Alamance Youth Leadership Academy (AYLA) sponsored by the Alamance Chamber, enjoyed the unique opportunity to hear from Dave King, CEO for LabCorp, about his leadership journey and the chance to ask questions about his career path and decisions made along the way. LabCorp is the largest medical diagnostic testing corporation in the world.

  • ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOLS AROUND OUR SCHOOLS SHOUT OUTS Apr 28, 2017

It was a fabulous joint event with all of our ABSS middle school AYLA students, along with private and charter school AYLA chapters. The event was held at Elon Community Church with leadership help provided by Elon University students.

On March 30th, and April 5th & 6th, Southern Middle School's 7th grade students attended a "First Look At College" Exposure Field Trip. The First Look College Program was sponsored by the UNC Visitor's Center. Students were given information about college admission, different ways to pay for college, and were taken on a tour of UNC's campus.

During the tour, students were shown various classrooms, visited the libraries, and were given an opportunity to participate in a mock graduation at Kenan Memorial Stadium. Students finished their day of learning about college by eating in the Rams Head Dining Hall.

Students learned valuable information about college and career planning on this field trip and came away with valuable insight about every single person can get admitted, pay for, and be successful in college!

Shout Out from Southern Middle Tracy Schledorn, School Counselor

On Wednesday, April 19th, Southern Alamance Middle School hosted our first-ever "Future Leaders Day” as part of our Career and College Ready school counseling program. During the event, all of our 6th grade students participated in mock interviews. Students prepared for this event months in advance by exploring their own interests, skills, and values through creating their résumés. They also spent hours learning about and practicing professional interview skills.

Community leaders served as interviewers. They were thorough yet incredibly thoughtful and compassionate in their interviews and their evaluations of the students' performance. I am amazed at the contribution of time, effort, and expertise from our community. The students were nervous but prepared and wowed us all! Students were beaming as they read their evaluations and wrote thank you notes.

Thank you to all the staff and volunteers that assisted in making it such a success! And to Ms. Cooley's Focus class for the inspiring artwork created for the event! It was certainly a meaningful experience for our students that provided them with important skills for their future endeavors.

Shout Out from A O Elementary Stefany Johnson, Second Grade On Friday, April 21st, AO's second graders held their annual Lemonade Stand. After completing our economics unit, we applied what we had learned to raise money to donate to charity. We had to make sure we made enough lemonade for the entire school (supply and demand). We divided up the work so everyone had a chance to participate (division of labor). We, the producers, had to make sure the rest of

the school, the consumers, knew about the stand, so we made posters that were hung all over school. During the sale, everyone had a specific job to do, and, at the end of the day, we had raised $452.50! We are donating the money to heifer.org so families around the world can have a better life. Big shout-out to second grade parents for donating cups, lemonade mix, and gallons of water! Also, another big shout-out and thanks to all of AO for supporting our second graders!

Shout Out from Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher & Librarian

Global Gone Great! The Seabees explored their world this week with events set up by their wonderful PTO parents. On Wednesday they had guest speakers presenting to each grade level in their area of study. The PreK students had Spanish speaking visitors from Western High School visit their classroom. The Kindergarten classes learned about the Great Barrier Reef as their area of the world is Oceania. The first graders were treated to a taste of Indian culture. Brazil was the area of study for the second graders. A Smith parent is originally from Brazil and she is always willing to share artifacts and

information from that area. Third grade learned about

Nigerian culture as they are learning all about Africa this year.

A Smith grandmother and her granddaughter taught the 4th graders all about European clogging and even got the kids in on the adventure.

The fifth graders, who are studying North America, brought things right on home with a visit from Eric Henry from T.S. Designs. This is a North Carolina based t-shirt company which works on the idea of people, planet and profit.

The following day we had a global parade to start off our day. Students, staff and parents were invited to wear any type of global outfits they had representing other countries of the world. There were many colorful outfits.

We got to learn a little bit about the culture of our families that attend Smith School.

Shout Out from Graham High Tracey Patterson, Media

Red Devil Leaders! The Graham High School Makers Club, led by Tracey Patterson and Jason Cheek, participated in their first ever Maker Faire in Burlington at Holly Hills Mall on Saturday, April 22nd. The GHS Makers Club is a new club this year and the students decided that the Burlington Maker Faire would be their culminating project. Students created mazes and obstacles courses to be used with our Sphero Sprk robots (which were generously donated to us by LabCorp), operated a green screen area and took photos of Maker Faire attendees which we have been sharing via email, demonstrated stop animation video

creation and experimenting as well as allowed attendees to try out the amazing game controller that one of our club students made with only cardboard, constructions paper and aluminum foil! The Maker students worked all day talking to the public and teaching them about just some of the amazing things we do at Graham High School! Fantastic job Maker Club!!! Way to demonstrate excellence! #RedDevilsInnovate #thinkRED #GrahamGreat
