ALCOHOLISM

&

DRUGISM:

A STUDY

What this is all about???Drug addiction or Alcohol addiction commonly called Substance Dependence, is a user's compulsive need to use drugs , alcohol etc. in order to function normally. When such substances are unobtainable, the user suffers from withdrawal. The section about substance dependence in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders does not use the word addiction at all. It explains: When an individual persists in use of alcohol or other drugs despite problems related to use of the substance, substance dependence may be diagnosed. Compulsive and repetitive use may result in tolerance to the effect of the drug and withdrawal symptoms when use is reduced or stopped. This, along with Substance abuse are considered Substance Use Disorders.

Many people struggle with substance dependence. For instance , alcohol is a part of many people’s lives, whether or not an individual person drinks. Many young people have drunk, or currently drink, alcohol. Almost every young person has friends or peers who drink alcohol, and many also have parents or other family members who drink. “Partying,” drinking socially with other young people, is considered “cool”. The media creates a lot of images of young people drinking and promotes drinking as being fun and popular. Stress is also one of the reason people get addicted to these.

DRUG STATISTICS

Inhalants generally fall into three categories: Solvents- paint thinner, nail polish

remover, gasoline, and glue Gases- whipped cream dispensers, spray

paint, hair spray, deodorant spray, nitrous oxide, ether

Nitrites- room deodorizers

In total , drugs have limitless undesirable effects on human body all leading ultimately to DEATH

Preventive actions are aimed on importance of healthy lifestyle as a whole .There are almost no actions aimed on alcohol prevention. One of the reasons is that school teachers and other specialists in the schools are poorly informed about the alcohol problems, about organizations provided assistance in a case of alcohol problems and they have almost no skills of practical preventive work in this sphere.

Young people themselves are not involved: almost all work is provided by adults (school teachers and other specialists working in the schools).

Responsibility for prevention work is not shared equally among institution & specialists. Usually it’s vice-director for education who is responsible for prevention but often it’s not among the priorities.

Preventive work is not systematical. No Awareness.

WHY PREVENTIVE MEASURES FAIL FOR YOUTH???

ONLY SOLUTION

ALL PREVENTIVE MEASURES MUST BE CARRIED OUT DEDICATEDLY BY THE CONCERNED AUTHORITIES AND STERNLY IMPLEMENTED.

COUNSELLING AND REHABILITATION CENTRES MUST BE OPENED FOR ADDICTS.

POSITIVE APPROACHMENT OF THE SOCIETY IS A BIG FACTOR IN ITSELF.
