Plant now for a Summer Show
The first spring bulbs are just poking their heads out of the ground in gardens around the region. Some early bloomers, such as crocus and snowdrops, might even bring colour into the otherwise still sleeping yards. Now is also the time to remember that summer blooming bulbs have to be planted in the spring to ensure a dazzling display in your flowerbed later in the season.
Many summer blooming garden favourites are grown from bulbs, tubers or root clumps, they include dahlias, gladioli, lilies and even peonies and hostas. They can be planted as soon as the ground is warm enough, around 10 degrees Celsius.
The best site for bulbs is on well-drained soil with organic matter added. Also consider the light requirements of the plants – you will find them on the package. Many summer blooming bulbs need full sun or partial shade. Bulbs can also make a great addition to your planters and baskets.
After choosing an appropriate site for your bulbs to grow, dig with a fork or spade to loosen the soil. Add some bone meal or bulb food to the soil to stimulate strong root development. If you are planting small bulbs like cyclamen or anemones, use a trowel to dig a hole at the recommended depth - see on the package. For larger bulbs, such as dahlia tubers and cannas, it is better to dig a large hole and mix the bulb food or bone meal at the bottom of the hole.
Place the bulb on top of this mix, making sure that the eye - this is the growth bud - is facing up before burying the bulb. Then all you have to do is water, fertilize and enjoy. Water the bulbs after planting and give them a good drink every time the soil is dry after the first flower buds appear. Fertilizing the plants monthly from when the shoots emerge until the plants reach full flower will keep them beautiful.
Some summer blooming bulbs, especially dahlias and gladioli, might need extra support to remain upright. A wire support, such as a peony ring, is an easy way to hold up plants with weak stems and large, heavy blooms. Stakes will also work, however it is a good idea to drive them into place at planting time to avoid accidental damage to the bulbs.
The different types of bulbs die down at different rates. Cut them down to soil level after the leaves have all yellowed and fallen over. Fading leaves can take away from the overall look of your garden. If they bother you, try growing your bulbs with low-growing herbaceous plants (plants that have no woody growth). They leaf out later on in the season and hide the bulb foliage.
Most summer flowering bulbs have to be dug up in the fall and stored indoors through the winter months. Use a spading fork to lift the bulbs from the ground. Some bulbs, such as dahlias, should be stored in clumps with soil around them, on a bed of lightly moistened peat moss or sawdust in a cool place. Other bulbs, such as cannas, have to be washed and dried before they can be stored away from sunlight in a cool, dry basement, cellar or garage. Keep your bulbs well labelled so you know what you are planting next spring.
Till next time... happy gardening,Submitted by Tara

Learning about the environment has rarely been this fun!
Students from McKim Middle School learn the basics of snowshoeing and playing in our winter environment with care from WVFK Community Educator, Dave Quinn.
The Columbia Basin Environmental Educa-tion Network (CBEEN) is growing, and would like to give cheers to BC Hydro, Revel-stoke Credit Union, TD Friends of the Environ-ment Foundation and Columbia Basin Trust, for their support of CBEEN’s Wild Voices for Kids (WVFK) pro-gram. Thanks to these communi ty-minded organizations, approxi-mately 4,700 students across the Columbia Basin in 6 school dis-tricts have enjoyed en-vironmental or heritage programs already this school year.
The fi nancial contribu-tions of these organiza-tions have allowed our children the opportunity for hands-on learning. Through these programs they have discovered local archeology, ex-plored wildlife habitats on snowshoes, learned about avalanche safety, and studied bats and lo-cal fossils. CBEEN’s website offers 133 dif-ferent programs by 79 community educators across the Columbia Basin. Wild Voices for Kids also supports get-ting children out of the classroom and into the fi eld by covering the cost of bussing for fi eld trips.
WVFK program co-ordinator Susie Mac-Donald emphasizes that “This program, which is unique in Canada, offers our students’ education from the local source that schools are often unable to fi t into their strained budgets. Pro-grams meet their grade and curriculum needs in a unique and interest-ing way with presenters drawn from all walks of life to share their unique passions about environ-mental and heritage top-ics. The value of these programs lies not only in curriculum but also in the hands-on learn-ing style that captures students who have dif-fi culty learning in the traditional classroom style”.
CBEEN anticipates that if funding allows, over 7,000 more stu-dents could enjoy a Wild Voices for Kids program this year. CBEEN is un-dertaking a campaign to
raise $25,000 to ensure continued programming through this spring and into the fall of 2013. Applause goes to the Regional District of East
Kootenay for contribut-ing already to this chal-lenge. If you or your organization is interest-ed in contributing to this unique program please contact Susie MacDon-ald at wildvoices@cbeen.org. CBEEN is a registered charity and donations can be made at www.cbeen.org.

OBITUARYEleanor Inness
"Snooks"1940 - 2013
Eleanor Innes passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013 in Cranbrook at 72 years of age. She was born on July 16, 1940. She was a very spe-cial lady to so many people. She started her career as a Dog Groomer with Anna May Gartside at the Clip Joint. She then opened up her own grooming place down town known to all as Pretty Pooch. Snooks was her nick name to many people. She was a volunteer at the red-cross and also did a lot with the SPCA.
Snooks had a love for animals; it didn't matter what kind or size. Her dogs and her horse were most special to her. She was an animal whisperer, loved camping, fishing and hunting or anything outdoors. Her new love became field trials with her horse, and Keith her husband, and she always looked forward to going to trials in the USA and Alberta where she met amazing friends, and was known as Fast Eddy.Snooks is survived by her husband Keith Inness, son Terry Lode (Bev), daughter Kim Boggs (Glen), and daughter Robin Pinchak (Clayton). She also leaves behind numer-ous grandchildren and great grandchildren that meant the world to her.Snooks' memorial service to be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 1:00 pm with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers please make donations in her honour to the Canadian Red Cross, #340, 1311 - 2nd Street North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3L1 or the East Kootenay S.P.C.A., Box 2, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 4H6.

In MemoriamIN Memory William Andres. January 18 1941-April 4 2011. Little did we know that morn-ing God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Sadly Missed, forever in our hearts. Your Loving Family
