Pre-Registration is RequiredRegistration is accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please submit your registration by phone, mail or walk-in at minimum one week before the start date of the class. If you wait, the class may be full or canceled due to low enroll-ment.

Who May Register?Any individual 18 years old or older may register for a Continuing Education course. Individuals 16-17 years of age may register for Continuing Education courses provided the student submits an Admission of Minor Form signed by their high school official with the registration form. An Admission of Minor form can be found on our website at www.beaufortccc.edu/coned/contin.htm. Students under the age of 16 are not allowed to register for continuing education courses, with the exception of personal enrichment courses offered during the summer months.

Fees, Books & SuppliesRegistration fees for each class do not include the cost of textbooks, supplies, or lab fees. Registration fees are set by the NC General Assembly and are based on the number of contact hours for each course. Continuing Education courses that require the use of technology equipment will also include a $5 technology fee.

RefundsThe refund policy for Beaufort County Community College was established by the North Carolina Department of Com-munity Colleges. (1) A student who officially withdraws from class(es) prior to the first class meeting is eligible for a 100 percent refund. (2) A student is eligible for a 100 percent refund if a class fails to “make” due to insufficient enroll-ment. (3) After the respective class begins, a 75 percent refund shall be made upon the written request of the student if the student officially withdraws from the class prior to or on the 10 percent point of the scheduled hours of the class. (4) Registration fees for self-supporting classes are non-re-fundable once the class begins.

Repeating a CourseA student can repeat an occupational class twice in a five year period. If enrolled more than this, the student must pay the current rate per contact/credit hour rather than the standard registration fee.

Purpose of Basic SkillsBeaufort County Community College offers over 25 classes in Beaufort, Hyde and Tyrrell counties. Programs focus on developing academic competencies as well as the fundamental skills necessary for tomorrow’s jobs. Adult Basic Education and High School EquivalencyAdults with less than a high school education or adults who wish to improve academic achievement may enroll in classes. Students performing from non-reader through eighth grade will start at their own level of proficiency and will be allowed to proceed at their own speed until they achieve their goals. Basic Skills PlusClasses are offered concurrently with Career Pathway classes to allow students to work on their High School Equivalency while also working toward various career credentials. Students may qualify for participation if they do not yet have a High School Equivalency or high school diploma and score at least adult secondary low level on placement test. Please contact the Basic Skills office for more information.

Start a Class?Would your church or business like to sponsor a new Basic Skills or English as a Second Language class at your site or in your community? New classes may be established in locations with a minimum of 10 students. A Basic Skills or ESL class can be offered in our service area upon request. Students my enroll in any of the Basic Skills programs throughout the spring, summer and fall. There is no tuition charge. HRD Employability LabThe Division of Continuing Education will be offering a Human Resources Development (HRD) Employability Lab class at the Beaufort County NC Works Career Center and Washington County Center for Human Services. Class topics in-clude: resume writing, job search techniques, work ethic, communication skills, conflict resolution, and students will be working on their Career Readiness Certification (CRC). Other topics may be covered as time allows. The class will be an open-entry, open-exit meaning students may attend at any of the times below that is convenient for them. Basic Computer SkillsThis 8-week computer class is designed for the unemployed or underemployed to assist them in gaining basic technol-ogy awareness. Students will master the keyboard along with using word processing to create a resume. Students will learn how to navigate the internet for job search strategies, as well as learn how to complete online job applications. Students will also explore various educational and governmental websites, including the new NCWorks.gov portal. Career Readiness for Nurse AidesThe Division of Continuing Education will once again be offering the pre-requisite class, Career Readiness for Nurse Aides. This class is for any student who wishes to enroll in the Nurse Aide I program. Career Readiness for Nurse Aides will cover topics such as goal setting, job search techniques, note taking skills, test taking tips, applications, resumes, and the all-important Career Readiness Certification (CRC). The NAI entrance exam has been replaced with the CRC. Students will need to take this pre-requisite class and earn their Silver CRC to be eligible for the Nurse Aide program. Along with the CRC, prospective students will also need to take the Workplace Observation Assessment and score at least a 1. We will also be giving students the Performance Skills Assessment. This assessment will allow students to work on areas that may be “barriers to employment”, such as their work attitudes, safety issues, and over-all job performance. Work Readiness AcademyThis 8-week academy is designed for those who are unemployed as well as those who are underemployed and are seeking to upgrade their skills and find better employment. The goal of this academy is to equip students with the skills and abilities to assist them with gaining independence through a lifetime of work. Nurse Aide IThe Nurse Aide I course prepares students to provide personal care and basic nursing skills for elderly adults. Emphasis is on the role of the nurse aide; communication; documentation; infection control; safety; resident’s rights; common disorders/diseases of body systems, aging changes; personal care and grooming; accurate measurement of vital signs; elimination; nutrition; death and dying. Although strongly encouraged, high school diploma/GED is not required for en-try into N A 1 program. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, student is eligible to apply for North Carolina State Certification Examination. Successful completion of exam is required for listing as a Nurse Aide I on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry. In addition to Monday and Wednesday nights, this class also meets two Saturdays per month from 8:30am-3:30pm. Funding assistance may be available through NC Works. Nurse Aide IIEntry into the Nurse Aide II program requires high school diploma or GED, listing in good standing on North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry, and satisfactory score on entrance exam. After review of basic NA I knowledge, including infection control, students learn more complex medical care procedures. These include :diabetic care; enteral nutrition; sterile technique and dressing changes; bowel elimination needs, fecal impaction removal, colostomy care/irrigation of; uri-nary elimination needs, catheterization, removal of a catheter; intravenous site care; maintenance of oxygen therapy; oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, and tracheostomy suctioning; and tracheostomy care. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and Final Written/Lab Competency Evaluation, graduate is eligible to apply for Nurse Aide II listing with the NC Board of Nursing-Nurse Aide II Registry. Health Unit CoordinatorThe Health Unit Coordinator course introduces students to a variety of clerical duties within a hospital setting. Emphasis is placed on clerical, computer, and receptionist duties for the nursing units; maintenance of consistent patient medical records; and inter/intradepartmental communication. Medication AideThe Medication Aide Course is a 24 hour course that prepares Nurse Aides to administer medications to residents of long-term care facilities. Course content includes instruction on safe administration of medications via oral, topical, sublingual, and other routes. Pharmacy TechnicianThe Pharmacy Technician class is a comprehensive 45-hour course to prepare students to enter the pharmacy field as a Pharmacy Technician 1. Course content includes medical terminology specific to pharmacy, reading and interpret-ing prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, IV flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reim-bursement procedures. While several exam options may be discussed, our course is geared towards the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB Exam. Beaufort County Community College Ed2Go courses are designed to meet individual’s needs and interests by enabling learners to take classes in the comfort of their own homes. You can study at a time that is most convenient for you, with-out the need for attending classes on campus. Each class will consist of two (2) lessons per week for a total of twelve (12) lessons or the equivalent of twenty-four (24) contact hours for 2.4 CEU credits. Certificate of Completions are available upon successful completion of a course.

Concealed Carry HandgunThis course is a requirement in order to apply for a Concealed Carry Handgun Permit in North Carolina. The course is split into two days, a Thursday night from 6pm to 11pm and the following Saturday morning from 8am to 1pm. You are required to furnish your own gun, holster and ammunition for the class. Forty rounds of ammunition are needed. You will be required to pass a written test with a score of 70 or better and fire a qualifying course of fire where you have to hit your target 28 times out of 40. Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AEDThe American Heart Association’s Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED program helps increase survival rates by training peo-ple just like you to respond quickly to sudden medical emergencies. It is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emer-gency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. Medical Office SpecialistThe Division of Continuing Education is pleased to announce the offering of a new program entitled “Medical Office Specialist”. The Medical Office Specialist program will provide skills training in basic computer operations, medical ter-minology, medical law and ethics, medical office procedures, professional etiquette, grammar review and transcription editing, electronic health records, and medical coding. This is a fast-paced program that will be offered in a hybrid set-ting with few seated classes; most class sessions will be held online, via BlackBoard. The Basics of Stick WeldingThe Division of Continuing Education, in partnership with Tyrrell County Schools will be offering a class entitled “The Basics of Stick Welding”. This 24-hour class will introduce students to the shielded metal arc (Stick) welding process. Using a hands-on approach, an emphasis will be placed on the flat welding process. FUNDING ASSISTANCENCWorks can now provide qualified individuals with funding assistance in approved short-term training pro-grams leading to long-term employment through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). WIA is a federally funded program for low income adults and dislocated workers enrolled or wishing to enroll in occupational training through Continuing Education. These funds may assist with registration fees, books, tools, required supplies, and supportive services.Individuals interested in receiving funding assistance must be fully enrolled in the NCWorks program PRIOR to the class start date.
