With the rise in the demand for natural beef, keep in mind the value of crossbreeding.Since no implants or feeding of growth stimulants are allowed in the natural beef programs, the heterosis ofthe Charolais crossbred calf has more value.

Our calves have been fed on Bull Challenger again this year. With the mild weather conditions they haveperformed well, gaining an average of 4.3 # per day in the first 65 days on feed. Donor Cow

The birth EPD’s combined with phenotype are thebest predictors of calving ease. All of the AI bulls weuse rank above average in calving ease, and havehundreds of progeny to prove it. It is a very importanttrait we want in our cattle.

The following pretty well explains research on birthweight and calving ease:

University studies in Wyoming and data fromMontana and Colorado lend credence to the followingconclusions:

1. Birth weight itself influences calving ease by65%.

2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weightof her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weightof his progeny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as theshape of the calf has 35-40% influence on calvingease.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight.A fetus can gain over one pound per day in thelast days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days canaffect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calvingease.

Remember, everything is relevant. Increasedgrowth, frame and performance will increase BW. Alonger-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expectedto have genetics for growth, it will display this prior tobirth as well as after. Continued selection for light birthweights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes andperformance of your cattle.
