We have, however, continued to grow and expand our business services portfolio over recent years to include training for key skill shortage areas such as project management, HR and Management Principles. With 8 training centres across Cumbria, Gen2 offer high quality business training locally, by a team of highly qualified trainers and lecturers all with many years business experience in senior HR and management positions.

The Gen2 business services training model provides a plethora of training programmes from Level1 traineeships to level 5 Diplomas in Applied HR. Regardless of management level, Gen2 can support the training and education needs of your staff to ensure your business, and more importantly, your staff have the skills and qualifications to enable your business to thrive. Furthermore Gen2 offer a full recruitment service for traineeship and apprentice learners enabling us to provide the next generation of skilled employees for our valued customers.

What are Traineeships?

Traineeships help to unlock the potential of young people aged 16-24. Traineeships provide a vital stepping-stone between full-time education and an Apprenticeship, further education or other employment.

The programme’s primary aim is to provide a high quality work experience placement, supported by skills and employability training, to increase the likelihood of participants entering into further education, sustainable employment or an Apprenticeship.

At Gen2, all of our Traineeship programmes start with a Work Ready Assessment Day, allowing young people to find out more about what is involved in a traineeship and allowing Gen2 to have initial conversations to see if the young person is eligible for the course.

Following the Work Ready Assessment Day, employer interviews take place and trainees are invited for a four day induction at Gen2 before commencing work with their employer.

We will provide all necessary information and guidance prior to and during your Trainee’s placement, ensuring that both parties receive a consistently high level of support.

Entry-Level Traineeships / Work Placements

Benefits to Employers

No cost to the employer - The programme is completely free to participating businesses.

Support the local region and economy – a recent poll of employers found that two fifths believe it is their duty to help develop the workforce of the next generation, while a third believe it is their social responsibility to help young people develop the skills they need to get a foot on the career ladder.

Reduction in staff training costs - a third of UK employers are currently providing some remedial training for young people joining them from school or college, Traineeships aim to reduce the shortfall in skills by training on the job.

An alternative to the traditional recruitment process - Traineeships provide an opportunity to vet and coach potential young employees or apprentices.

Assess the suitability of your business to provide mentoring or training for young people - Traineeships provide an ideal opportunity to trial in-house training plans, before committing to Apprenticeship programmes.

Upskilling existing employees - Traineeships provide opportunities for current members of staff to develop their training and mentoring skills, perhaps as part of a leadership or management qualification.

Your Commitment

The work placement element of the Traineeship will give participants a supported first experience of the workplace environment, with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their employability.

The work placement should comprise a structured, purposeful and fully supported training opportunity, in order that the Trainee is afforded the greatest possible range of work-based learning experience.

A Trainee’s work placement will last for at least 12 weeks and working hours will be suited to your business requirements and the age of the trainee.

The Traineeship programme is flexible to the needs of the Trainee and the expectations of the employer, so each placement will be discussed and agreed on a case-by-case basis.

Once a Trainee completes their placement, employers will provide either; a formal interview where an Apprenticeship vacancy has arisen, or an employer reference and constructive written feedback to aid the Trainee in application to future roles.

The Traineeship Process

In order to maximise the benefits of the programme to both the young person and your business, we will discuss what you can offer to a prospective Trainee and what you hope to get from hosting a Trainee. We will also agree with you the duration of the placement and the interview/selection process.

Once you have selected and approved a Trainee to join you, we will ensure all workplace preparation training, H&S checks and learning agreements are completed ahead of the proposed start date.

During the placement:

• We will keep in contact with the Trainee’s workplace mentor to monitor their attendance and progress, addressing any issues and providing remedial study/employment coaching sessions where necessary.

• We will conduct regular reviews every 6 weeks to record how the placement is progressing.

• We will be available to support you in dealing with any matter of concern that may arise.

After the placement:

• We will liaise with you regarding the Trainee’s potential to progress to an Apprenticeship or other paid role with your business; or Assist in arranging an exit interview for the Trainee, in order that they complete the placement with constructive feedback and an employer reference, to aid them in securing other employment

• We can provide advice and information on the range of Apprenticeships courses the Trainee may be eligible to progress to.

• We will conduct a final review and evaluation of the placement, preparing progression documentation where appropriate.

Employing an Apprentice Apprenticeships

Cumbria ATA

CATA provides a ‘one stop shop’ that supports businesses with apprentice recruitment and selection; management of apprentice costs, wages and tax; and training apprentice management, acting as a link between employers and leading training providers like Gen2.

CATA offers companies the flexibility to take on an apprentice without the inherent employment risks or overheads, capturing costs in a simple, affordable monthly payment.

For businesses who may not be big enough to be able to cover all aspects of the apprenticeship framework in-house, CATA also provides links with larger host employers who can complete the range of skills required.

Government-Funded Training

Each apprentice trained through Gen2 secures a direct government subsidy, covering the cost of training. This money enables us to provide you with well motivated, flexible and highly trained young workers at a cost your business can afford.

Apprenticeship training is funded from 16 to 18 years old, with significant financial support to businesses employing apprentices aged between 19 and 24 years of age.

The influx of ‘new blood’ trained using the latest technology offers many benefits beyond simply adding productivity to your business. Typically your apprentice’s salary, subsidised training and recruitment will cost you around £10-13k, but with Gen2’s help you can offset this figure by accessing government funding and grants. Of course any remaining training costs are then tax deductible.

Funding and Support

Gen2 offers a wide a range of apprenticeships in Business, from Administration to Management, all delivered by highly experienced tutors.

An unprecedented 94% of apprentices trained by Gen2 progress into full-time employment with their sponsor; ample proof that our apprenticeships really work for businesses and that they really work for the apprentices themselves!

Gen2 currently train over 1,250 apprentices in Cumbria across a broad spectrum of apprenticeship disciplines. With 15 years in the field, Gen2 has the knowledge and expertise to guide them into successful, enriching careers that genuinely match their aspirations and skill sets.

The apprenticeship is the bedrock of training at Gen2; they are a foundation for the total package of lifelong professional learning and career development provided by the organisation.

A broad spectrum of high quality apprenticeships for business are available from Gen2. Delivered at all eight of the our Cumbria-wide network of sites, Gen2 currently offers over 20 different apprenticeships that cover a broad spectrum of disciplines.

Employment-based apprenticeships allow existing staff members at your business to consolidate their knowledge and prove competency in their professional field. Gen2’s model allows little disruption to their day to day job, as the majority of the qualification is achieved through evidence of work, built in to a portfolio.

The success of Gen2 apprentices is well proven, with an unprecedented 94% of the 2,500 we have trained in the last 15 years progressing on into full-time employment with the organisation they were assigned to. A significantly better rate than the national average, it is also even higher than the employment rate of graduates leaving University.

The role of a Customer Services Apprentice

The Gen2 Customer Service Apprenticeship provides an industry recognised qualification for customer service for every sector. From local government and the NHS to hospitality, travel and tourism.

Students will understand how customer service delivery and legislation effects customer expectations and how the customer services process can be developed and improved through customer feedback, promotion of products and services and effective teamwork.

Where the training is delivered

Students are based with their employer from the start and attend a number of release days at the Gen2 Skills Centres, to equip them with the necessary skills and underpinning knowledge to achieve their diploma.

Areas of study

As a Customer Service Apprentice you will understand how customer service delivery and legislation affects customer expectations and how the customer services process can be developed and improved through customer feedback, promotion of products and services and effective teamwork.

The Gen2 Business Administration Apprenticeship provides a wide variety of training from basic business administration duties to administration skills necessary to manage teams.

Apprentices undertaking this qualification are suitable not only as general administrators but can slo focus on specialist roles such as HR Administrators, Medical/Legal Secretaries and Personal Assistants.

Where the training is delivered

Students are based with their employer from the start and attend a number of release days at the Gen2 Skills Centres, to equip them with the necessary skills and underpinning knowledge to achieve their diploma.

Business Administration Apprentices typically work within an office environment. Examples of the units they are likely to undertake are:

The role of a Project Control Apprentice

As a Project Controls Apprentice, you will study a wide breadth of Project Control modules. The mandatory units you will study cover areas such as:

Monitoring risks, opportunities and uncertainties

Estimating, planning, cost engineering and commercial support

Applying quality assurance procedures Retrieving, recording and presenting project control

Identifying and quantifying emerging changes through project control

Where is the training delivered?

Training will be delivered at Gen2 and at Prima Uno’s (our partner company for this course) premises. You will attend the Gen2 centre on a one day per week basis in Years 1 and 2, and spend the rest of the time with your employer.

Student Pre-requisites

Pre-requisites are to suit employer requirements but would typically be GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English and Science and a minimum of 120 UCAS points.

Duration 24 months.

This course provides the perfect next step from the Gen2 Level 3 Diploma in HR practice. This diploma is also suitable for a variety of HR roles, including HR Executive, HR Officer, HR Manager and HR Advisor.

Duration 24 months.

The role of a HR Apprentice

The Level 5 Diploma in Applied Human Resource Management is designed to develop high performing HR professionals who understand how to use HR practices to meet organisational needs and add value. Upon completion, students can apply for Associate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

Where the training is delivered

During Year 1, students attend one evening per week during term time. During year 2 students are typically assessed in the workplace.

Candidates must gain 90 credits to achieve the qualification. 26 of which are attained from the Mandatory units:

Programme Overview

The programme aims to focus on the essential skills required to develop as a Team Leader and is aimed at candidates who are currently in supervisory/team leader roles or who aspire to be in management.

This course is accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM).

NVQs are work based qualifications which recognise the practical skills and knowledge a person needs to do their job effectively.

Covering a wide range of subjects for almost every occupational area in every business sector, NVQs allow a flexible route for an individual to become qualified in the workplace with no examinations. In addition, the qualifications demonstrate

that an individual has met the national standard for an occupational role.

There are many benefits to employers including the fact there is less down-time due to training and employees have proof of competence in the latest industry skills.

NVQs are assessed from evidence the candidate produces from what they do in their day-to-day job.

Programme Overview

The Level 3 Diploma in Human Resource Practice is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of different HR models and practices for candidates who are starting their career in Human Resource Management.
