Hindustan University held its 5th Convocation ceremony on 27th September, 2014. Mr. Arun Nanda, Chairman, Mahindra Holidays & Resorts Ltd and Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd presented the degrees to 1378 students and delivered the convocation address. Honoris Causa Degree D. Sc. was awarded to Dr. Hee Ok Kim, President, Dongguk University and Dr. Tessy Thomas, Outstanding Scientist, Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad, DRDO. In the UG course a total of 961 Graduands received the degrees, in the PG course a total of 396 Graduands and 09 students from the Diploma stream received the Degrees. 7 students from M. Phil and 5 Ph.D. candidates also received the Degrees.

Mr. Ashwin Fernandes , Head QS Asia visited Hindustan University on 17th December 2014. He focused on three important aspects namely QS Rankings, QS Star Ratings, and the presentation titled, “Two Pillars of Academic Reputation” was enlightening. At the end of the presentation there was an interactive question and answer session with staff of Hindustan University.

Mr. Krish Dhanam, Global Ambassador for the Ziglar Group, co-founder of a training company and an International Motivational speaker visited Hindustan University on 5th January 2015. He Spoke on Life Skills, to the staff and students and stressed the importance of creating a balance between professional and personal life. He also explained the rational and scientific approaches towards handling and balancing real life situations.

5th International Youth Convocation of Y’s Men International 2014 5th International Youth Convocation of Y’s Men International 2014 edition was hosted by Hindustan University, Chennai from 4th August to 10th August, 2014. The Youth Convocation brought together Youth Leaders and members from different parts of the world to build friendship and trust between people. Delegates from 6 continents and 30 countries were part of this accredited event.

Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chairperson, Hindustan Group of Institutions received the Indo-Australian Award for Meritorious Service, from His Excellency Mr. Patrick Suckling, Australian High Commissioner for her pioneering work and achievements in the Engineering and Educational fields in a glittering ceremony held at Chennai on 22nd November 2014.

Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director Hindustan University received Education Excellence Award from Mr. Oomen Chandy, Hon’ble Minister of Kerala for offering over Rs 2 crore worth scholarships for sports persons during the International Olympic Day celebration organized by the Thiruvananthapuram District Olympic Association in collaboration with Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of Kerala.

Worldwide Achievers award‘Worldwide Achievers award’ was presented to Mr. Ashok Verghese, Hindustan University by Hon’ble Minister Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resource Development during the India Education Excellences Award 2014 Programme held on 14th April 2014 at New Delhi for the outstanding service and contribution to the education sector. The Award recognizes the professional contributions and academic achievement of an individual/organization in the area of education.

Ms. Nishita Vegi, of Aeronautical Department has won the first prize in the National Level KTH Master’s Challenge 2015 under Aerospace Engineering category in the event conducted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

Mr. Raghavendran. P. R. M.Tech. (Automobile Engineering) final year student secured second place in the Symposium of International Automotive Technology (SIAT 2015) for the student poster presentation competition on ‘Half Car Semi active Suspension System Using Timing Advanced Fuzzy Logic Control” held from 21 - 24th January 2015 in ARAI Pune. Mr. Nithin Gadkari, Hon’ble Road Transport Minister, and Govt. of India, presented the Award.

Award for i-Cradle Project A Multidisciplinary Team participated in the prestigious Intel Embedded Challenge 2014, on 09th and 10th December 2014.The University project “Intelligent Cradle (i-Cradle)” secured 9th place & 4th place in professional category. Master Mind Challenge Top FinalistPramodhan Chennavajjula, MBA Student, was the top finalist in the 13th MMA All India Students Convention 2014 ‘Chanakya- The Master Mind’ contest held on 1st November 2014.

Mr. K. Kamalakkannan, Associate Professor, Hindustan University recieved SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award - 2015 for his outstanding contribution as one of the top engineering educators. As a Teetor Award recipient, SAE International invited him to be their guest for a week during the 2015 SAE World Congress which begins on 20th April 2015 in Detroit, Michigan. He shall be honored as a Teetor Award recipient and presented with a plaque.

The multidisciplinary team of Hindustan University, Chennai participated in the prestigious NIYANTRA 2014 - The Annual Graphical System Design Contest organized by National Instruments India, Bangalore on 18th Sept, 2014. The Team bagged the First Prize in the competition. A cash prize of Rs 75,000/- and merit certificate was presented to the team by Mr. Alex Davern, Chief Operating Officer, National Instruments, USA. The team designed a complete system INDUS - Industrial Defense & Unmanned Ground System that uses

Team Recon from the School of Aeronautical Sciences, participated in 2014 Mission 7 of International Aerial Robotics Competition. The competition was conducted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle System International, Yantai, China and 30 teams from across the globe participated. Kurula Varkey Design Forum 2015The thesis of Ms. Krithi Priyadharshini, Student of School of Arcitecture titled “Housing for All” has been selected as one among the 18 selected thesis for the Kurula Varkey Design Forum 2015 organized by CEPT University, Ahmedabad.There were a total of 69 entries received for Kurula Varkey Design Forum 2015 from across the globe.

The Southern Regional Round Jury for “Transparence 2014” organized by Saint Gobain Glass, India was hosted in Hindustan University on 28th November 2014. The 100 kW Solar Power System was installed at Hindustan University by M/s Tata Power Solar Systems Ltd., Bengaluru on 17th September 2014. Mr. Toine Can Megen, Co-Founder of Auroville Consulting, Auroville, was the Chief Guest. Following the Inauguration of Solar Power System, an International Seminar was conducted “Solar Energy-Recent trends and Policy Issues”.

Hindustan University was privileged to host Zone 6 Zonal NASA convention titled Atyanta 2014 themed Extremeness in Art forms from 27th to 29th June 2014. Dr. (Mrs). Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Mr.Ashok Verghese, Director and Dr. S. Ramachandran , Vice Chancellor Hindustan University were present for the inaugural function. Ar. Jaisim Krishna Rao, Founder -Jaisim Fountain Head, Bangalore was the chief guest. Valedictory function witnessed the presence of Ar. N. M. Salim (Founder-N. M. Salim Associates, Kerala) Ar.Deshpande (Former President IIA India) Ar. Vergis Oommen (Design Chair) HITS.Competitions were held and the School of Architecture and Planning Anna University won the most prestigious over all trophy Dr.KCG Verghese Memorial Trophy. Faculty of Architecture Sathyabama University Chennai and School of Architecture MES, Kerala being the first and the 2nd runner ups respectively.

Prof. Dr. Uta Pottgiesser, Dean, School of Architecture, University of Applied Science, Detmold, Germany visited Hindustan University on 19th

December 2014 and delivered an interesting lecture on International Seminar on “Adaptive Building Envelopes Concepts of Holistic Building Design.

As part of the Madras Day celebrations, School of Architecture organized a one day national workshop on Conservation in Urban Architecture and a 5 day exhibition of Studio works, addressing the adoptive re-use of the Senate House in Chennai and its precinct, It was held at Goethe Institute Chennai.

• A Lecture on Energy Conservation for Enfuse was delivered by Mr. Madhavan Nampoothiri, Private consultant, Coimbatore on 20 January 2015.

• The Centre for Automation & Robotics (ANRO) , Depts. Of Mechanical Engineering and Automobile Engineering conducted a workshop on Condition Monitoring on 27th February 2015. Dr. V. Bhujanga Rao, Distinguished Scientist (DRDO) , Director General (Naval Systems and Materials) & President of Condition Monitoring Society of India was the Chief Guest.

• Centre for Research and Consultancy organized a seminar on “ Carbon capture and storage – Challenge for India” by Dr. Sukumar Devotta, Former Director, NEERI on 12th November 2014.

Alumnus- Ar.S.Vinodh (1994-1999 batch) from School of Architecture received an award for excellence in residential architecture hosted by regional Tamil magazine “ Kattumana Thozhil”.He received the award from the Governor of Tamil Nadu, His Excellency Dr. K. Rosaiah on 24th January 2015.

Mr. Shyam R Nair, Assistant Professor, Centre for Automation and Robotics received “BEST Alumni Achiever Award” from his School. The award was presented by the Hon’ble Home Minister, Ramesh Chennithala, of Kerala on 26th January 2015.

Hindustan University (HITS) in association with HITS Alumni Association (HITSAA) held the Annual Alumni Meet 2014 on 22 November 2014. Mr. Sahil Dewan, the Founder and Director, FuturEd, was invited as the Chief Guest for the occasion. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director graced the occasion. A batch of students from Dongguk University enrolled in the EIBIS programme at Hindustan University along with students from China, Bhutan, Taiwan celebrated the Lunar New Year Day Celebrations at Open Air Theatre on 19th Feb 2015. Ms. Sukhee Lee, Advisor, International Affairs initiated the event.

Pradyumna K Rao, and Gaurav, Students of School Of Architecture, Hindustan University attended the Summer University Programme School “ Facades Meets Interiors” from 5th May, 2014 to 14th June, 2014 at School of Architecture, University of Applied Sciences, Detmold, Germany.

The fourth batch EIBIS (English, Indian History & Culture for International Students) comprising 10 students from Dongguk University, South Korea attended the orientation programme on 30 January 2015 at the International Office, HITS. Dr. David Easow, Deputy Director International Affairs and SOM, welcomed the students and staff handling the course. Dr. Sherine Joy, Academic Coordinator presented an overview of the course and its outcome.

Students from Jeonju University, South Korea completed one year Special English Course for International Students (SECIS) at Hindustan University. Valedictory programme was held at Hindustan University on 28th November 2014. Dr. David Easow, Deputy Director, School of Management and International Affairs, welcomed the audience. Mr. K.C. Abraham, Joint Director, Hindustan University was the Chief Guest.

Mil-Com Aerospace Group and Hindustan University signed an agreement on 14th February 2015 in Singapore to provide Aviation Training in India. The agreement was signed by Dato Eugene Lim Chairman, Mil-Com Aerospace Group and Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, CEO, HGI.

1st Cambridge English – India Partnership Summit was held recently. Dr. S. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor signed MOU with Chief Executive, Mr Saul Nassé, Cambridge English Language Assessment.

NASSCOM and Hindustan UniversityIT-ITeS Sector Skills Council(SSC) NASSCOM entered into a collaborative agreement to integrate Global Business Foundation Skills (GBFS) and Foundation Skills in IT (FSIT) Courseware developed by IT-ITeS SSC NASSCOM in its curriculum. On the occasion Dr. Sandhya Chintala, Executive Director, SSC NASSCOM & Vice President, NASSCOM said “This MoU is a key milestone in our mission to develop a skills ready workforce for the IT-BPM industry”.

An MOU was signed between Hindustan University and LV Prasad TV and Film Academy, Chennai in September 2014. This MOU offers opportunity for MBA Media and Entertainment to learn part of their curriculum at L V Prasad TV and Film Academy. It also opens options for them to interact with people from the industry.

Hindustan University, celebrated Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Birth Anniversary as National Unity Day in its campus in a fitting manner on 31st October 2014. Commodore (Retd) S. Shekhar was the Chief Guest.

Mr. Sanjay Ramaswami Advocate Madras High Court was the chief guest for the Anti-Ragging campaign conducted at Hindustan University on 11th July 2014.

Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 5th September 2014. Dr. A. Gnanam, Former Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan, Madras and Pondicherry Universities was the Chief Guest.

Founder’s Memorial day was held on 13th February 2015 to commemorate the life achievements and service of Founder Chairman, Late Dr. K. C.G. Verghese. Dr. M. Gabriel , Academic Director, Mylapore Institute for Indigenous Studies, delivered the Memorial Address. The word of God was ready by Dr. Susan Marthandan, Director, HCAS. Mrs. Mili Maria George Chandy read the excerpts from the autobiography of Dr. K. C. G. Verghese. There was a rendition of Choir by KC Tech and HIET. Dr. A. K. Parvathy, HOD, EEE and Dr. S. Illanjiam, Dean, Microbiolgy, HCAS paid the tributes. Dr. Pon Ramalingam proposed the Vote of Thanks.

Hindustan University, Hindustan Y’s Youth Club of Chennai & Y’s Men club of Mylapore jointly celebrated the NSS day on 24th September 2014. The Blood Donation Camp was organised in association with the Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau. First aid Awareness programme was organised in association with the St. John Ambulance.

Hindustan University, Chennai, in collaboration with Field Publicity Office, Puducherry, conducted a Special Outreach Programme on 11th December 2014. In order to create awareness and to promote two significant national level campaigns “Save the Girl Child” and the Prime Minister’s “Swachh Bharat Mission” were held. Mrs. G. Meenathal, Project Director, Rural Development Scheme, Kancheepuram District was the Chief Guest.

Mrs. Anjel Soji Director, Jeevan Center for Suicide Prevention, YWAM was the Chief Guest for the Suicide Prevention programme held at Hindustan University on 16th September 2014 coinciding with the World Suicide Prevention Day.

A group of YMCA Delgates from Taiwan visited Hindustan University on 15.02.2015. There were 21 YMCA youth headed by Mr. Steve Chiu, Executive Director of Taichung YMCA. As part of their service campaign. They were taken around the campus.

Tablers of Madras Knights Round Table 181 with the support of HT Ashok Verghese launched a massive publicity campaign for Round Table India by flagging off 100 buses of Hindustan University plying from Chennai to Pondicherry, with publicity messages requesting people to reach out and contribute so as to help the needy through the organisation Round Table India.

Hindustan University Men’s cricket team won the runner up trophy in the south zone inter University Cricket Tournament 2014-15 organized by Anna University, Chennai at JJ College of Engineering, Trichy from 16th to 27th November, 2014.

Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Hindustan University was the Chief Guest and Mrs. Prathibha Suriyashekar, Former Indian Basketball Women Team Captain and Mr. G. R. Maheswara Reddy, Former Hindustan College of Engineering Coach were the Guests of Honour for the Valedictory Function and gave away the Prizes to the Winners. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, Hindustan University presided over the function. University of Madras, Chennai clinched the winner up trophy for the Third Consecutive year in the South Zone Inter University Basketball Women Tournament 2014.

HI-5 Sports Fest 2014

Hindustan University sponsored this event in celebration of the National Games that was held on 31st January in Trivandrum. More than 200 students from the Campus participated in the rally which witnessed more than 1000 runners from across the City. Dr. Pon. Ramalingam, Registrar addressed the gathering.

The 2nd Dr KCG Verghese Equestrian Competition was held on Saturday, 20th December 2014 at Hindustan University Campus. The Chief Guest of the event was Maj Gen RG Krishnan – Chief of Staff – HQ – Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala Area. Several teams participated and winner of the competition was Chennai Equitation Club
