Dear Sisters and Brothers,
May the Lord give you peace,
The present pandemic has changed
our lives, how we work, recreate,
interact, travel and pray to name a
few. On a personal level at age 89 all
this has greatly affected my life and
ministry. In the Book of Ecclesiastes,
we read, “There is a time for everything under
the sun.” On a personal level I discern that the
time for me to retire from active ministry has
arrived. This is made ever more painful because
the circumstances for a coming together to bid
farewell is not possible.
On Thursday, July 2nd I left the Friary in
Burlington after more than ten years and began
retirement at our Franciscan Senior residence, in
Pittsboro, NC. I carry with me so many
memories, the joyous times, the Sunday and
weekday liturgies, working together planning for
the new church, the laughter of kids in the school
yard and yes, when I was privileged to be at your
side when sickness and death of a loved one
caused such great pain. These are just a few
instances.
In this retirement God willing, I will continue to
celebrate Mass every day. Please know that as I
stand at the altar in the chapel you will be present
in a special way. I do ask the favor of your
prayers for me.

Queridos hermanos,
Que el Señor les conceda paz,
La actual pandemia ha cambiado nuestras vidas, en como
trabajamos, reconstruimos, interactuamos, viajamos y
oramos, entre otras. A nivel personal a los 89 años, todo esto
ha afectado enormemente mi vida y mi ministerio. En el Libro del
Eclesiastés, leemos: "Hay un tiempo para todo bajo el sol". A
nivel personal, percibo que ha llegado el momento de retirarme
del ministerio activo. Esto se hace cada vez más doloroso porque
las circunstancias para reunirnos y despedirnos no es posibles.
El jueves, 2 de julio dejé el convento en Burlington después de
más de diez años y comencé a jubilarme en nuestra Residencia
Franciscana para Ancianos, en Pittsboro, Norte Carolina. Llevo
conmigo tantos recuerdos, los momentos alegres, las liturgias de
los domingos y los días laborables, trabajando juntos para
planificar la nueva iglesia, la risa de los niños en el patio de la
escuela y sí, cuando tuve el privilegio de estar a su lado cuando la
enfermedad y la muerte de un ser querido causó un dolor tan
grande. Estos son solo algunos ejemplos.
En esta jubilación, si Dios quiere, continuaré celebrando Misa
todos los días. Tengan en cuenta que cuando esté en el altar de la
capilla, ustedes estarán presente de una manera especial. Les
pido el apoyo de sus oraciones por mí.

La Abundancia de Dios como una Invitación a la Generosidad
El sol es extraordinariamente generoso, regalando enormes partes de
sí mismo cada segundo.
Los científicos nos dicen que cada segundo, dentro del sol, el
equivalente a 4 millones de elefantes transformados en luz, un regalo
irrecuperable y único. El sol se está regalando. Si esta generosidad se
detuviera, toda la energía eventualmente perdería su fuente y todo
moriría y se volvería inerte. Nosotros, y todo en nuestro planeta,
vivimos debido a la generosidad del sol.
En esta generosidad, el sol refleja la abundancia de Dios, una
generosidad que nos invita a ser también generosos, a tener corazones
grandes, a arriesgarnos más en sacrificarnos, a dar testimonio de la
abundancia de Dios.
Pero esto no es fácil. Instintivamente, nos movemos más
naturalmente hacia la auto conservación y la seguridad. Por
naturaleza tememos y nos horrorizamos. Debido a esto, ya sea que
seamos pobres o no, tendemos a trabajar por una sensación de
escasez, temiendo siempre que no tenemos suficiente, que no hay
suficiente y que debemos tener cuidado con lo que damos. Y que no
podemos permitirnos ser muy generosos.
Pero Dios desmiente esto, como lo hace la naturaleza. Dios es
pródigo, abundante, generoso y derrochador más allá de nuestros
pequeños miedos e imaginaciones. La naturaleza también es
asombrosamente abrumadora y pródiga. El alcance de nuestro
universo, incluso en la medida en que lo conocemos, es casi
inimaginable. También lo es la abundancia y el carácter pródigo de
Dios.
Vemos esto, por ejemplo, en la parábola bíblica del sembrador: El
sembrador, Dios, a quien Jesús describe, no es una persona
calculadora que siembra su grano con cuidado y discriminación solo
en un suelo digno. Este sembrador esparce semillas
indiscriminadamente en todas partes: en el camino, en los arbustos,
en las rocas, en tierra estéril, así como en buena tierra. Al parecer,

ilimitada y no es tacaño al darla.
Dios es igualmente pródigo y generoso en el perdón, como vemos, en
los evangelios. En la parábola del Padre que perdona al hijo pródigo,
vemos a una persona que puede perdonar con una riqueza que
empequeñece la dignidad y el costo calculado para sí mismo. Y
vemos esta misma generosidad en Jesús mismo cuando perdona tanto
a quienes lo crucificaron como a quienes lo abandonaron durante su
crucifixión.
Dios, por todo lo que podemos ver, es tan rico en amor y misericordia
que puede permitirse el lujo de ser derrochador, generoso, no es
calculador, ni discrimina, increíblemente se arriesga y de gran
corazón más allá de nuestra imaginación.
Y esa es la invitación: tener un sentido de la abundancia de Dios para
arriesgar siempre un corazón más grande y una generosidad más allá
del miedo instintivo que nos hace creer que, debido a que las cosas
parecen escasas, necesitamos ser más calculadores.
El Evangelio de Lucas tiene uno de los mensajes de justicia social
más fuertes en todas las Escrituras (cada sexta línea es un desafío
directo para la justicia para los pobres) y, sin embargo, en el
Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús, al advertir sobre el peligro de la riqueza,
no condena los ricos o las riquezas Más bien hace una distinción entre

somos conscientes de la abundancia de Dios, exhalamos generosidad
y perdón, respiraremos el aire de generosidad y perdón. Volveremos a
inhalar lo que exhalamos.
Nunca he conocido a un hombre o mujer verdaderamente generoso
que no dijera que, siempre, él o ella recibían más a cambio de lo que
él o ella daba. Y nunca he conocido a un hombre o una mujer
verdaderamente de gran corazón que viviera de una sensación de
escasez. Para ser generosos y de gran corazón, primero debemos
confiar en la abundancia y generosidad de Dios.
De esa abundancia obtenemos un sol que es generoso y un universo
que es demasiado grande y pródigo para ser imaginado. Es un desafío
no solo para la mente y la imaginación, sino especialmente para el
corazón, para que se vuelva enorme y generoso.

The Abundance of God As An Invitation to Generosity
The sun is extraordinarily generous, giving huge parts of itself away
every second.
Scientists tell us that every second, inside the sun, the equivalent of 4
million elephants are being transformed into light, an irretrievable,
one-time gift. The sun is giving itself away. If this generosity should
halt, all energy would eventually lose its source and everything would
die and become inert. We, and everything on our planet, live because
of the generosity of the sun.
In this generosity, the sun reflects the abundance of God, a largesse
that invites us to also be generous, to have big-hearts, to risk more in
giving ourselves away in self-sacrifice, to witness to God's abundance.
But this isn't easy. Instinctually we move more naturally to self-
preservation and security. By nature we fear and we horde. Because of
this, whether we are poor or not, we tend to work out of a sense of
scarcity, fearing always that we don't have enough, that there isn't
enough, and that we need to be careful in what we give away, that we
can't afford to be too generous.
But God belies this, as does nature. God is prodigal, abundant,
generous, and wasteful beyond our small fears and imaginations.
Nature too is stunningly overwhelming and prodigal. The scope of our
universe, even just in so far as we know it, is almost unimaginable. So
too is the abundance and prodigal character of God.
We see this, for instance, in the biblical parable of the Sower: The
Sower, God, whom Jesus describes, is not a calculating person who
sows his grain carefully and discriminately only into worthy soil. This
Sower scatters seeds indiscriminately everywhere: on the road, in the
bushes, in the rocks, into barren soil, as well as into good soil. He has,
it seems, unlimited seeds and so he works from a generous sense of
abundance rather than from a guarded sense of scarcity. We see that
same abundance in the parable of the vineyard owner, where the
owner, God, gives a full day's wage to everybody, whether they
worked the full day or not. God, we are told, has limitless wealth and
is not stingy in giving it out.
God is equally as prodigal and generous in forgiveness, as we see, in
the gospels. In the parable of the Father who forgives the prodigal son
we see a person who can forgive out of a richness that dwarfs dignity
and calculated cost to self. And we see this same largesse in Jesus
himself as he forgives both those who executed him and those who
abandoned him during his execution.
God, from everything we can see, is so rich in love and mercy that he
can afford to be wasteful, over-generous, non-calculating, non-
discriminating, incredibly risk-taking, and big-hearted beyond our
imaginations.
And that's the invitation: to have a sense of God's abundance so as to
risk always a bigger heart and generosity beyond the instinctual fear
that has us believe that, because things seem scarce, we need to be
more calculating.
The Gospel of Luke has one of the strongest social justice messages in
all of scripture (every sixth line is a direct challenge for justice for the
poor) and yet, in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus, while warning about the
danger of wealth, does not condemn the rich or riches. Rather he
makes a distinction between the generous rich and the miserly rich.
The former are good because they radiate and incarnate God's
abundance and generosity while the latter are bad because they belie
God's abundance, generosity, and huge heart.
Jesus assures us that the measure we measure out is the measure that
we ourselves will receive in return. In essence, that says that the air we
breathe out will be the air we re-inhale. That isn't just true
ecologically. It is a broad truth for life in general. If we breathe out
miserliness, we will re-inhale miserliness; if we breathe out pettiness,
we will breathe in pettiness; if we breathe out bitterness, then
bitterness will be the air that surrounds us; and if we breathe out a
sense of scarcity that makes us calculate and be fearful, then
calculation and fearfulness will be the air we re-inhale. But, if aware
of God's abundance, we breathe out generosity and forgiveness, we
will breathe in the air of generosity and forgiveness. We re-inhale
what we exhale.
I have never met a truly generous man or woman who didn't say that,
always, he or she received more in return than he or she gave out. And
I have never met a truly big-hearted man or woman who lived out of a
sense of scarcity. To be generous and big-hearted we have to first trust
in God's abundance and generosity.
From that abundance we get a sun that is generous and a universe that
is too huge and prodigal to be imagined. That's a challenge not just to
the mind and the imagination, but especially to the heart—for it to

Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of
trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will

Why Do Catholics Baptize Babies?
Question: Why do Catholics baptize babies?
Answer: For adults who want to be baptized, the celebration
only takes place after a long, guided, and thoughtful process
through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This is also
true for many Protestant Christians, who are baptized later in
life, often after a personal, transforming religious experience.
So, it seems fair to ask why our Catholic tradition includes
infant baptism. After all, if we make adults who want to
become Catholic wait months and even years as they grow in
their understanding of Christ and his teachings, why should
babies — who “do nothing” — be baptized?
Our custom of infant baptism dates back to the earliest days of
the Church, when St. Paul baptized entire households,
including, we presume, children (see Acts 16:15, 33; 18:8).
That had become common practice by the second century.
When Christianity was legalized 200 years later, infant baptism
became the normal practice throughout the Church.
We recognize that in Baptism, we are given the grace to
overcome original sin — the human tendency to choose
ourselves and our own wills over God — and to become
members of the Church. This is the gift we give to infants in
Baptism.
In its essence, the baptism of infants also reminds us adult
Christians that the gift of salvation and membership in the
Church (i.e., the Body of Christ) is God’s initiative. It is freely
offered to us, regardless of where we might be in life’s journey.
Salvation isn’t something we earn. Instead, we see that Baptism
is the beginning of a lifelong process of growing into the kind
of disciples that Jesus wants us to be.

¿Por qué los Católicos Bautizan a los Bebés?
Pregunta: ¿Por qué los católicos bautizan a los bebés?
Respuesta: Para los adultos que desean ser bautizados, la
celebración solo tiene lugar después de un proceso largo, guiado
y reflexivo a través del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos.
Esto también es cierto para muchos cristianos protestantes, que
se bautizan más tarde en la vida, a menudo después de una
experiencia religiosa personal y transformadora. Entonces,
parece justo preguntar por qué nuestra tradición católica incluye
el bautismo infantil. Después de todo, si hacemos que los

damos a los bebés en el bautismo.
En su esencia, el bautismo de infantes también nos recuerda a
los cristianos adultos que el don de salvación y membresía en la
Iglesia (es decir, el Cuerpo de Cristo) es la iniciativa de Dios. Se
nos ofrece gratuitamente, independientemente de dónde
podamos estar en el viaje de la vida. La salvación no es algo que
ganamos. En cambio, vemos que el Bautismo es el comienzo de
un proceso de por vida de convertirse en el tipo de discípulos
que Jesús quiere que seamos.

Cualquier buen agricultor te dirá que, independientemente de
cuán buena sea la calidad de la semilla, su germinación y
producción de fruta efectiva depende de la calidad de la tierra.
Preparar la tierra es uno de los componentes más esenciales de la
agricultura. No hay duda de que la semilla de la Palabra de Dios
eventualmente logrará su propósito. Dios no puede fallar y no lo
hará. Sin embargo, cuándo y cómo esa semilla da fruto depende
de nosotros. ¿Cuál es la calidad y el estado de tu tierra? Los
asuntos y preocupaciones de la vida pueden hacer que no
prestemos atención a nuestra vida interior. Esta negligencia a

Live the Liturgy — Inspiration for the Week
Any good farmer will tell you that regardless of how good the
quality of the seed, its sprouting and bearing of effective fruit
is dependent upon the quality of the soil. Preparing the soil is
one of the most essential components of farming. There is no
doubt that the seed of God’s Word will eventually achieve its
purpose. God cannot and will not fail. When and how that
seed bears fruit is, however, dependent upon us. What is the
quality and condition of your soil? Life’s concerns and
preoccupations can cause us to become inattentive to our inner
life. This sometimes unintentional neglect can result in our
soil becoming hard, overgrown with weeds, rocky, parched,
and lifeless. When God’s seed is sown, it doesn’t always take
root because it struggles to establish roots and flourish. How
can you more attentively attend to the soil of your heart so that
it will be a fertile and vital place for the fruit of the Gospel to

God in your Ordinary Moments
Focus on the Good
When I was a child, my mother had a set
of sculptures resembling three human
heads. One head had hands over the
ears, one had hands over the eyes, and
one had hands over the mouth. Of
course, they depicted the phrase, “Hear
no evil; see no evil; speak no evil.” I
have seen these images repeated many
times since then, usually as the monkey
heads from a Japanese proverb,
which would have probably seemed a
little less creepy to me when I was a
small child. Apparently, there is no
consensus about the full meaning or
certain origin of these three images nor
the phrase. At the very least, it causes us
to reflect on the need to avoid evil and
look for the good in things.
As I have lived my life, I have come to
believe there are more people who lives
their lives in a contrary manner to these
images. It is not that they seek evil, but
it is as if they “see no good, hear no
good, and speak no good.” Gossiping is
the way they pass the time, and they
always seem to find the negative in
people and situations. Being a good
steward certainly means that we do not
seek evil, but more than that, it means
that we see the abundance of good
things all around us. These gifts of God
are big and little, profound and ordinary.
By seeing the world in this way, we
begin to change our personalities and
our overall disposition. We always need
to follow a new proverb: see all the
good, hear all the good, and speak about

Enfócate en lo Bueno
Cuando era niño, mi madre tenía un
conjunto de esculturas que se asemejan a
tres cabezas humanas. Una cabeza tenía las
manos sobre los oídos, una tenía las manos
sobre los ojos y la otra tenía las manos
sobre la boca. Por supuesto, representaban
la frase: "No escuchar el mal; no ver el mal;
no hablar mal.” Desde entonces, he visto
estas imágenes repetidas muchas veces,
generalmente como las cabezas de mono de
un proverbio japonés, lo que probablemente
me habría parecido un poco menos
espeluznante cuando era un niño pequeño.
Aparentemente, no hay consenso sobre el
significado completo o el cierto origen de
estas tres imágenes ni de la frase. Por lo
menos, nos hace reflexionar sobre la
necesidad de evitar el mal y buscar lo bueno
en las cosas.
A medida que he vivido mi vida, he llegado
a creer que hay más personas que viven sus
vidas de manera contraria a estas imágenes.
No es que busquen el mal, sino que es como
si "no vieran el bien, no escucharan el bien
y no hablaran el bien." Chismeando es la
forma en que pasan el tiempo, y siempre
parecen encontrar lo negativo en las
personas y situaciones. Ser un buen
corresponsable ciertamente significa que no
buscamos el mal, pero más que eso,
significa que vemos la abundancia de cosas
buenas a nuestro alrededor. Estos dones de
Dios son grandes y pequeños, profundos y
ordinarios. Al ver el mundo de esta manera,
comenzamos a cambiar nuestras
personalidades y nuestra disposición
general. Siempre necesitamos seguir un
nuevo proverbio: ver todo lo bueno,
escuchar todo lo bueno y hablar sobre lo
