My body, my rules: In all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it can be easy for children to get over-whelmed — with parties and holiday get together, they may be seeing lots of new or unfamiliar family members and friends. It’s important to remind children that they can say no to hugs, kisses, and other physical signs of affection if they are uncomfortable. Review “my body, my rules,” and give children polite ways to decline any signs of affection that they don’t want to give or receive. A simple “no thank you” to a request for a hug, or deflecting to a high-five, gives a child im-portant control over who touches him or her, and how he or she feels in any situation. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord ap-pears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm — Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading — The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel — Magi from the east arrived, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1-12).

LIGHT OF THE WORLD: Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Mes-siah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant

countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all peo-ple into the light of his love. SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON (1774-1821) January 4 Though her liturgical designation is “Religious,” Elizabeth Seton, her feast-day prayer re-minds us, was also wife, mother, educator, foun-dress. Born into a wealthy Episcopalian family, Eliza-beth married William Seton, whose untimely death in Italy where the young family sought healing for William’s tuberculosis, left her, at twenty-nine, a widow with five children. Inspired by the faith and charity of the Italian family with whom they stayed, Elizabeth embraced Catholicism despite her family’s disowning her and ceasing financial support. This woman of many firsts (and several vocations!) opened the first free Catholic school, beginning the American Catholic educational system, and founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. The tuberculosis that claimed her husband took also her oldest and youngest daughters and, finally, at just forty-seven, Elizabeth herself. Another first: in 1975 she was canonized the first native-born American saint. LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — ¡Levántate y brilla, Jerusalén! La gloria del Señor amaneció sobre ti (Isaías 60:1-6). Salmo — Que te adoren, Señor, todos los pueblos (Salmo 72 [71]). Segunda lectura — El misterio de que los gentiles son coherederos, socios en la promesa en Jesucristo, se ha dado a conocer a los hombres (Efesios 3:2-3a, 5-6). Evangelio — Magos del oriente llegaron, diciendo: “¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que ha nacido?” (Mateo 2:1-12).

LUZ DEL MUNDO: Se puede entender la Epifanía como una exten-sión de la Natividad del Señor que celebramos el 25 de diciembre. En la Navidad celebramos la venida de Jesús como el rey y Mesías tan esperado por el pueblo judío, y en la Epifanía celebramos la revela-ción de Jesús como el Salvador y la Luz de las naciones; es decir, de judíos, gentiles y de todos los pueblos. La estrella brilla con tanto ful-

gor que atrae a los magos que vienen de países distantes para adorar a Jesús. No son judíos, y sin embargo se ven atraídos al que es la Luz del Mundo. La carta a los efesios revela que la Luz del Mundo era tanto para gentiles como para judíos, pues Cristo reúne a todos los pueblos en la luz de su amor. SANTA ELIZABETH SETON (1774-1821) 4 de enero Elizabeth nació en una familia anglicana donde aprendió a amar a Dios y a la Sagrada Escri-tura. Contrajo matrimonio a los 19 años con William Seton y ambos engendraron cinco hijos. Debido a la economía y la salud de su marido, emigró a Italia y posteriormente sufrió la muerte de su esposo. Gracias al testimonio y ayuda de una familia católi-ca, expresó su deseo de hacerse católica y, final-mente, en 1805 profesó la plena comunión con la Iglesia. Como hija de catedrático llegó a ser una mujer de amplísima educación e ingenio y fundó una escuela para educar a los niños y mantener a su familia. Unos años después, junto con otras tres compañeras fundaron otra escuela en Baltimore, naciendo así la primera comunidad religiosa de mu-jeres fundada en los Estados Unidos: Hermanas de la Caridad de San José. Gracias a su visión y al caris-ma de sus hermanas, crearon las escuelas parro-quiales en los Estados Unidos, influenciando el cre-cimiento del catolicismo y por supuesto, la educa-ción católica.
