AWARDS YEARBOOK 2012 ABOUT CEDIA

CEDIA members specialise in the planning, design, supply, installation, integration, concealment and control of automated electronic systems for the modern, intelligent home. They can install anything from multi-room audio systems and home cinemas to complete home networks and sub-systems which intelligently control lighting, security, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), and even garden facilities, from lighting to watering.

CEDIA members can customise anything from a medieval castle, to an ocean-going yacht or a regular new-build property, turning each into a centrally-controlled haven in which to enjoy the full benefi ts of a 21st century electronic lifestyle.

CEDIA was founded in 1989 in the United States and came to the UK in 1996. As a strictly non-profi t organisation, our aim is to maintain and raise standards throughout the industry. Home automation is a rapidly

advancing technology, so homeowners need to be sure that the company they’ve hired is fully up to speed with the latest hardware and software developments. CEDIA offers its members comprehensive education and training in the latest technologies and installation techniques so, CEDIA can guarantee the highest level of profi ciency and customised solutions from its members.

All of CEDIA’s members agree to adhere to a strict set of principles and ethics when they join the organisation and CEDIA checks that its members are properly insured. Their commitment to service and professionalism in all elements of installation and design guarantees that you don’t have to worry about a job being completed to anything but the highest standard. CEDIA encourages UK based CEDIA ESP (Electronic Systems Professional) members to participate in professional Certifi cation as part of the continuing drive for high standards within the industry.Currently there are three Certifi cation exams;

EST2 (CEDIA Certifi ed Installer), Advanced Installer and Designer Level 1. CEDIA Certifi ed professionals must then take a minimum number of continuing education units (CEUs) each year to maintain their status.

The membership of CEDIA is exceptionally diverse, ranging from worldwide manufacturing companies to local, family run installation fi rms. Creating a responsive, intelligent home is an act of creativity and imagination based on the client’s lifestyle requirements, and CEDIA prides itself on every member company being unique in terms of size, style and approach.

CEDIA is here to revolutionise the way in which home systems interact, taking the concept of home automation further than ever imagined. CEDIA custom installers know that technology is constantly changing, so they’ll lay the groundwork and cabling for any future improvements in home automation.

CEDIA is the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association, an international trade organisation spanning three continents, with offi ces in four countries and a global membership of over 3,500 companies.

AWARDS YEARBOOK 2012 ABOUT THE AWARDS

The CEDIA Awards 2012 has built on the success of the 2011 scheme attracting 100 entries from 10 countries throughout the Region. From English country homes to stunning super yachts sailing the world and private villas in Arabia and Africa, this year’s shortlist celebrates the best residential custom installation projects with a heady mixture of excellence touched by the exotic.

Each installation category is judged by a prestigious panel comprising building industry, design professionals and technical experts.

The judges look for outstanding design and integration within all the categories. As well as the need to be integrated and beautifully concealed with the interior,

important factors included imaginative and appropriate design, relevance to the client’s brief and use of technology, safe and tidy racks as well as a bit of ‘wow’ factor.

The identity of member companies taking part in the CEDIA Awards scheme is not revealed to the judges, this is in order to maintain the integrity of the judging process.

The CEDIA Awards are open only to CEDIA member companies. More information about the Awards can be found on the dedicated CEDIA Awards website which gives a unique insight into the scheme, its entry requirements and its past winners and fi nalists. Visit www.cedia.co.uk/awards to fi nd out more.

Established in 2006 to recognise and reward high quality system design, installation and integration within the home electronics industry, the CEDIA Awards are a key strand of the CEDIA marketing campaign. Now in its seventh successful year, the CEDIA Awards continue to celebrate excellence in the residential custom installation sector across Region 1 (Europe, Africa, Russia Middle East, India & Pakistan).

The Loewe CII programme brings a guaranteed attractive margin, with no requirement to take stock. Members also receive brand introduction from highly experienced Loewe staff and installation training for the products.

Loewe believes Custom Installers (CI) are the key conduit in the CE market and in 2012, have committed even more heavily to the sector. This includes hosting an interactive display at ISE last January, signing on to the Essential Install show South in June and having open dialogue at bi-annual Loewe CI Forums.

Graham Knowles, Loewe CI Account Manager adds “ISE was a huge success, attracting custom installers from around the World with a particularly healthy number of visitors from the UK. We believe Loewe should be the brand of choice for premium

installations and we have implemented a plan to fulfi l that need. Our participation in these trade shows creates an opportunity for us to reach out to the CI community and better establish what assistance is needed. We are a company with a desire and passion to listen to what the industry and custom installers specifi cally require.”

As the recipient of over 200 design awards, Loewe still produces from its factory in Kronach, Bavaria with typically superb German engineering. The company avidly promotes a system approach and its carefully matched sound and media products are increasingly well-suited to custom installation requirements. Features include RS232 connectivity to enable control of home automation systems, multiple home networking and internet browsing facilities, an IR repeater, and more. Loewe product features must always be of use to the end customer, of course –

rather than a simple ticked box on a tech spec sheet. Loewe’s undeniable enthusiasm for the CI Channel is fuelled further with the announcement of new TV range: Connect ID. Loewe absolutely recognises the importance of the UK market and the recent Connect ID launch event at Harrods was the fi rst time in the company’s history that a world product premiere was staged in the UK. With a wider range of screen sizes planned, colourful frame options, even better picture and audio and other user enhancements, it promises to satisfy even the most demanding of customers.

Loewe, Europe’s leading manufacturer of premium televisions and audio products, has expanded their presence in the custom install channel. Since creating the Loewe accreditation scheme called Custom Installer Indirect (CII) last year, they have doubled Loewe CII partners. This operation runs alongside its existing direct installer partnerships and is tailored to appeal to installers focused on the premium end of the market.

Aesthetics are an important part of this 18th Century home with a modern twist. The brief for a basement family room, as part of a major refurbishment, demanded something modern and striking. Working closely with the architects, Olive Audio Visual created a series of wall mounted boxes, with lights implanted behind to give the impression they are ‘fl oating’. The boxes, built to exact dimensions, disguise the speakers and sub-woofer, as well as providing storage, but the overall effect is of an art installation. Roof lights, essential for maximising natural light during the day, mean

that total light exclusion is impossible. To address this, the drop down screen is carefully located in front of them, to reduce the ambient light and to avoid blocking light when not in use.

The room is controlled through an RTI handset providing simplifi ed operation of the AV and children’s gaming equipment. Lighting scenes, incorporating the fl oating boxes, have been created to enhance each activity. The client loves the system as the sound and image quality is much better than they were expecting.

The judges consider Olive Audio Visual delivered everything the brief outlined: “integrated and elegant with a beautiful layout”.

Ashway Smart Homes has made the most of this compact space through its thoughtful approach to room design and layout. A 6ft wide

electric screen, with blackout-backing, covers the bay window and disappears when not in use. A false ceiling hides the projector and speakers and has been made into a feature of the room through the addition of LED lighting. The client enjoys 5.1 surround sound, home cinema and PS3 gaming effortlessly controlled via a Control4 system. The client is still in awe of the fi nished room and confesses that it gets used almost every day!

For this media room, complete ‘invisibility’ was paramount. Bespoke Home Cinemas specifi ed a Future Automation lift to conceal the projector.

This was fi tted by removing the entire ceiling, with the advantage that it enabled acoustic and thermal insulation to be added and for cabling to be installed without disturbing the room above. In-ceiling speakers, in a 5.1 confi guration, along with the projector hatch have been spray-painted in a colour to match the ceiling. A Control4 system transforms the room from lounge to home cinema with just one button. The client is ‘over the moon’ as there is ‘no evidence that there’s a cinema.’

An awkward-shaped basement has been transformed into a multipurpose room for music appreciation, home cinema and kids’

playroom. The orientation of the room was changed by 90 degrees to allow for a 2m projector screen, which is ‘drop down’ to keep the room clutter free. Purpose-built cabinetry hides all the AV equipment and keeps it out of reach of the children.

An RTI handset simplifi es control of the room. The music-lover client is impressed by the sound quality which has been achieved, despite the limited budget.

A converted garage into a multi-functional media room, this space provided a high quality gaming, movie and TV experience for the whole family on a limited budget.

This clever media room provided modernisation to the restoration of a late 18th century house for a young family. The installers created a room which blended in with the interiors whilst providing a variety of high quality media and movies on a Kaleidescape system.

The judges saw this project as “a truly multi-purpose room” and were particularly impressed by the sound quality and the lighting. At fi rst glance, the room appears ordinary. However, pressing a button on the AMX touch panel can make a motorised screen emerge from a cupboard or the doors open on the TV cabinet.

To meet all the owner’s requirements, Smart Business implemented two separate audio systems, comprising a 5.1 home cinema system, alongside Bowers & Wilkins speakers for playing the guitar or karaoke.

The room also serves as an ideal party venue, taking advantage of the whole sound system. Disco lights, strobes, lasers and a mirror-ball have also been fi tted to enhance the mood. The area is sound-proofed to avoid disturbing the rest of the house.

As the room is in the basement, the access system has been integrated with the AMX controller to alert the occupants when someone arrives with the option to open the door.

The client loves spending time here with friends and family.

A cleverly designed space where the owners can relax and enjoy themselves in a multitude of ways: watching movies, playing video games, karaoke, guitar playing or hosting a party.

Dark Side of the Room

BEST MEDIA ROOM OVER £15,000 (€18,000)FINALIST

Dark Side of the Room was briefed to design a media room for a 16th century castle. To overcome the issue of a 19ft ceiling, a

customised cabinet has been built to house a tensioned fl oor-mounted electric screen, which creates a ‘wow’ factor as it rises up. The unit also stores front speakers, subwoofers and the client’s DVD collection. The projector is installed on the top of a recessed/rotating rack and is ISF-calibrated with ‘day and ‘night’ pre-sets. An RTI control system ensures ease-of-use for the non-technical owners.

This brief had two distinct requirements: for a ‘live’ stage and high-spec TV room. The space is acoustically treated using absorption,

diffusion and refl ection panels hidden behind fabric-lined walls. Imagine This built a motorised wooden stage, used by the client’s children to perform shows, for ease of use, and to enable integration into the Crestron control system. The AV system, incorporating freestanding Bowers and Wilkins speakers and a motorised 16:9 screen, delivers a full HD experience. The client was concerned that he would need to make compromises over his unusual brief but is delighted that this has not been the case.

The screen is the TH-65VX300, and a rigorous review of its credentials has seen the screen awarded an impressive 5 star rating from the top consumer magazine in the sector, ‘What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision’. This follows the landmark achievement of Reference Status recognition from the experts at ‘AV Forums’, making the TH-65VX300 the fi rst screen to gain this accolade in over three years.

“Spin a good Blu-ray disc and the VX300’s picture is uncannily sharp; it uncovers detail rivals either hint at or just overlook. And when it comes to 3D, its performance is simple amazing. The fi nest plasma display we’ve ever tested.” What Hi Fi? Sound and Vision (March issue).

“The 2D and 3D performance of the VX300 is quite simply the best that we have seen from a display and whilst it may have taken three years, we fi nally have a replacement for the Kuro. The Panasonic Professional VX300 is an exceptional display that deservedly wins our Reference Badge and as such must now be considered the benchmark against which all other televisions will be measured.” Steve Withers of AV Forums

This model form part of the professional based CHT range from Panasonic which includes the TH-85VX200 85”, TH-103VX200 103” and TH-152UX1 152” models. These superb 3D screens are extremely popular in the CI market purely for their 2D quality, let alone their 3D capability. The black brushed aluminium bezel hints at the quality before they are even switched on.

The VX screens include an industry-highest native contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 for overwhelming black reproduction, a high speed driving technology to achieve the PDP’s full HD moving picture resolution and crosstalk reduction technology - a crucial requirement for producing clear and crisp 3D images.

The ultra high-speed drive technology achieves clear and highly detailed 3D video even on the ultra-large panels. The built-in ‘professional quality engine’ has doubled the colour reproducibility with 30-bit processing. These advances allow the world’s fi rst ultra-large Full HD 3D plasma display line-up to reproduce high quality 3D video sources accurately in high quality and create an immersive experience that allows the audience to feel as if they were a part of the scene.

The CI partner for Panasonic CHT screens is the award winning distributor, AWE Europe, who provide a professional route to market for these specialised products. Recognising the specialist handling capability that is required when installing the larger format screens, AWE provides offers the CI trade a full site survey, quotation, delivery and installation service.

Panasonic Professional launched a brand new 65” Custom Home Theatre (CHT) display in November 2011 and many dealers, reviewers and videophiles have since been keen to get their hands on the screen! Benefi ting from an engineering focus on producing the ultimate in image quality and a signifi cant investment from Panasonic, it is certainly a step up from mass market models.

This creative conversion of a double garage has resulted in a truly cinematic experience for the client. The room was extended by 3m to accommodate two tiers of fi ve reclining seats each with “ButtKickers”. The cinema system comprises a 3m micro perforated fi xed mount screen, full HD projector and 7.1 sound system. The existing store room was changed to an equipment room, with a custom-built cabinet, to discreetly house the AV kit and the client’s DVD collection.

The imaginative décor consists of black carpets, red-carpeted stage, popcorn machine and imported Hollywood fi lm posters. Cinema Architects also designed an ‘out of this world’ lighting scheme incorporating fi bre optics and LED strip lights. Integrated control of the entire home cinema and lighting is enabled through an iPad. Cinema Architects has excelled at achieving the desired Hollywood Movie theme. From the client’s perspective: “The entire installation is a true work of professionalism. The sound is amazing, the picture quality is vivid and life-like and truly satisfying.”

Described by the judges as “old school Hollywood fun” this project “brings a perfect cinema experience into the home.”

This project was highly commended by the judges as “an awesome movie watching experience”. The client wanted to convert a

swimming pool into a dedicated 8-seat home cinema. A stand-alone room was constructed within the pool house, using stud walls and with a concrete fl oor. For soundproofi ng, the room was isolated from the fl oor using recycled car tyres, with an 18mm marine ply fl oating fl oor on top. FAB AV also used plasterboard sandwiching a layer of green glue on the walls and ceiling.

The delighted client believes: “The fi nished product far exceeds our expectations in terms of visual and audio quality and best of all it has come in bang on budget.”

Sensory International has created a home cinema, within a garage, which focuses on audio performance. Artcoustic’s range of

Spitfi re speakers were specifi ed for their high sensitivity as well as high quality cinema and stereo sound quality. A 90” fi xed frame acoustically transparent screen maximises the small dimensions of the garage. To match the client’s budget, a custom-built Mac-Mini running specifi c media software undertakes the function of media server whilst an RTI control system enables ease of use.

The client’s view is that: “He loves the size of the screen and also the sound that can be produced from the speakers.”

The brief was explicit that the home cinema should be discreet without compromising on performance as it was to double as the

family snug. Customised cabinetry hides the majority of the AV equipment, while the TV is built into a recess. The ceiling is suspended to accommodate the electric drop-down projector screen and a bulk head was designed to house the projector. Grille cloths were made to perfectly match the décor; rendering the speakers near invisible.

The fi nal words from the client are “to suggest they succeeded would be a huge understatement!”

A purpose-built home cinema within a new residence, this project excels in both video and audio reproduction. The Screen Excellence Cinecurve acoustically transparent screen makes the most of the room’s proportions; a JBL Synthesis speaker system delivers high quality sound and a Digital Projection Avielo Optix 235 Superwide projector enables Blu-ray widescreen content to be displayed in spectacular fashion. The front left, centre and right loudspeakers are positioned behind the projection screen to ensure correct sound staging and localisation.

The cinema control is via an RTI T3-V handheld remote linked to the whole house RTI XP-8 control processor. The Marantz AV7005 was selected as the surround processor. As it offers serial control of all audio parameters, it was possible to provide presets on the remote so the client does not need to access the setup menus.

This successful installation refl ects HFX’s technical design capability and attention to detail. The owners are ecstatic about the performance of their new 15-seat home cinema and enjoy hosting movie evenings. The judges summed up the project as: “It’s fab. It looks like THE best home cinema.”

“What a delightful cinema – this is how it should be done.”

The brief demanded a state-of-the-art, 8-seat cinema with a modern, minimalistic feel. The centrepiece is a Screen Research 2:40:1 X-Mask 2™ curved cinema screen. The acoustically transparent 2.8 metre frame has been built with lateral masking, framing the screen with a cinematic black border that is fl exible to a range of aspect ratios.

The screen is complemented by a Digital Projection M-Vision projector which delivers a pristine high-defi nition picture. To maintain a clean interior, Smartcomm has used a mirror-

kit projection system in the ceiling; which refl ects the picture through electrically driven mirrors. This conceals the projector from view, reduces noise and eliminates distractions. Sleek, stylish Triad In-Wall speakers provide exceptional surround sound and help sustain the sophistication of the décor. With seats on two-levels, a 9.2 speaker confi guration gives the optimum balanced sound across the room.

The room dimensions are small, however by working closely with the architect and interior designer, the equipment has been installed unobtrusively. For ease of use, the system is fully integrated through a Crestron control system. The judges were also impressed by the “creative use of ceiling lighting”.

The entire room, including the lighting and blinds, is controlled from a Crestron TPS-6X wireless touch panel; easily accessible for the whole family. Thoughtful touches such as the popcorn machine and ‘Theatre Spot’, illuminating the top of the stairs, all add to the ambience.

The project demonstrates high-end audio performance along with thoughtful interior design to match the needs of the client; an

architect. Nirvana chose an anamorphic lens and a 2.4 aspect ratio non-perforated screen to increase brightness but without compromising the picture quality. For discreet storage; the motorised screen is mounted on an elevator while the Grand Utopia speakers are on a motorised platform. Acoustic treatment includes motorised shades on the windows to act as diffusers and absorbers. An AMX control system, which integrates AV, lighting and blinds, creates a ‘cinema mode’ at the touch of a button.

The owner wanted to develop this property and then sell it, so budget was a primary concern as was infrastructure in terms of future expansion. A Crestron system provides integrated control of all AV – a surround sound media room and multi-room audio – as well as lighting.

The space constraints of a two bedroom apartment had to be considered within the design, as there was no area for a rack. A customised unit has been built in

the main reception to house all the AV sources and a 50” plasma. To achieve the required ventilation in the unit, four low-noise 100mm fans are accommodated within it. For aesthetics, plaster-in ‘invisible’ speakers have been used.

Media sources for the apartment include a satellite TV box, radio tuner, AV input plate and an internet enabled Blu-ray player. Future expansion cabling, of pairs of coax and network cables to the two

bedrooms, makes them expandable for various options like satellite, radio and Freeview as well as the data network and door intercom.

Proof of the success of the project is that T&T Automation are in talks with the client with regards to providing an integrated solution for his next residential development.

The installation shows concern for budget and space; reusing existing equipment and fi tting, for example, tricolour LED lights in the kitchen to hide surround sound speakers while creating a futuristic touch.

The client, a property developer, wanted an integrated system which would ‘blow the socks off’ any potential tenants without detracting from the charm of a 16th century listed barn.

The system is based around a Crestron AV and lighting control system, accessed through a centrally mounted in-wall touch panel and Crestron keypads. Perfect Integration also developed a comprehensive iPad app for more advanced control such as adjusting the lighting scenes.

The ‘wow’ factor has been achieved with a Future Automation sliding panel system, for the main TV, built into a stone clad fi replace while the family room has a ‘fl oating’ TV on a motorised bracket. Amina invisible speakers in the double-height main living area and Velodyne in-wall units, with grilles routed into the oak skirting, fi ll the space with sound but with no visual impact.

The project was a resounding success, helping to secure a tenant within weeks of going on the market and breaking rent levels for the area by some considerable margin. The client was so impressed that they plan to replicate the system in a second barn conversion.

Perfect Integration was praised by the judges for doing “an excellent job of making integration virtually invisible”.

The Crestron lighting system has 96 circuits and includes PIR detectors at the top and bottom of the stairs for automatic switching. In the basement, these trigger LEDs in the pool and gym providing an impressive view for anyone passing through. The project surpassed all of the client’s requirements.

Interior/exterior lighting and blinds are controlled through a Lutron lighting system. A Crestron system integrates whole house audio and security and has been set up to allow control of the Lutron system reducing the amount of wall clutter. The Crestron wall panels can be used to view CCTV images and for access control, including video monitoring and two-way audio communication.

Programming for the wall panels is consistent in each room to underline ease of use. The system can also be controlled by iPads to give an extra hi-tech feel to the property.

The infrastructure, which has been designed so that it can be upgraded by the eventual owners, allows for full HD distribution over dedicated fi bre optic cables, all pre-wired, as well as dedicated cat 5 cables.

To assist with marketing the property, a ‘Home Demo’ button activates a pre-set lighting scene, music in all rooms and the home cinema. The sales agents have been impressed by the system’s simplicity of use and the big impact it makes on prospective buyers.

T&T Automation has delivered a truly remarkable fully-automated home. The brief required integration of multiple devices and services including: AV, security, access control, lighting and blinds, swimming pool, HVAC and media room. The system has been designed with various levels of redundancy so that each sub-

system can work independently but is also integrated within the main house control system. Impressively, any in-wall touch panel controls any room through a consistent and self intuitive GUI. The panels also provide room to room paging and intercom.

Each room with a TV display benefi ts from a choice of sources including video servers, satellite TV programming, Blu-ray, Apple TV and playback of CCTV footage. The

security system includes alarm monitoring and bio-metric fi ngerprint door entry. A DMX lighting network enables the owner to choose lighting scenes throughout the property. The surround sound media room contains a 3D TV and projector with a designer sofa, fi tted with a custom D-Box solution, which moves in time with the fi lm being watched. The high level of integration means the client uses the system all the time and enjoys showing it to friends and family.

The long-standing owner of this large property wanted to integrate control systems, as part of a complete home refurbishment,

to simplify operation and reduce wall clutter. A Lutron lighting control system, incorporating an astrological clock, controls blinds and lights at set times of the days.

In the client’s landscaped garden, feature lighting come on at dusk and off at midnight, with a manual override button to keep them on late. Lutron keypads and touchpanels are used to operate the 83 automated blinds, which are programmed into scenes for total light control.

SMC successfully overcame some challenging issues with this contemporary glass and concrete villa in Kuwait. The client

required abundant natural light alongside careful heat control; as temperatures can reach 46 degrees centigrade. The blinds, some of which have 8m drops, automatically close with the movement of the sun.

With limited skilled labour in the region, the systems are designed to be extremely robust, with fail-safe systems, back-up generation and extensive remote diagnostics and repair. The owner has the ability to access advance settings, from anywhere in the world, while the family has their own simplifi ed user interface.

A fully managed wireless network covers the yacht’s internal and external areas. The Bang & Olufsen equipment is of US specifi cation, to match its sailing ground, and the vessel is pre-cabled for future fi tting of US source products.

Although the primary method of control on the yacht is through Apple

iPads, the B&O remote controls can still be used; the two methods working perfectly in tandem through a Master Link gateway. As well as AV, the iPads provide integrated control of the lighting, blinds and the yacht’s engine systems. Each cabin enjoys use of its own interactive iPod dock and Kaleidescape Blu-ray player. On the fl ybridge, the owner can listen to

A development scheme to revive eight Grade 11 Star listed properties was considered by the judges to be “an impressive project that works cleverly with a show house”. One of the challenges of the brief was that the ornate plasterwork and fi ne detailing of the 19th century interiors had to be preserved. SMC decided to focus on providing integrated IP-networkable digital systems wherever possible; as a lighter-weight, less expensive, more fl exible infrastructure. The properties are pre-wired throughout using MediaFlex, a composite cable containing two CAT5e and two co-axial cables. A fi bre-based TV distribution system has also been used to minimise cable runs.

The building services, including lighting, HVAC and access control are integrated through a Crestron control system. Additionally, a Lutron Homeworks lighting system provides enormous fl exibility for mood and light scene setting.

The pre-wired infrastructure allows numerous options for the purchasers of the apartments. SMC worked with the Developer’s marketing team to create sales literature which clearly illustrates how equipment can be placed in the rooms.

The client complimented SMC on “the value they bring and their tenacity to see a good job well done.”

The brief was to provide a pre-wire design and lighting control system for 3 new-build properties. The developer wanted

maximum ‘bang for their buck’ while ensuring the system could be tailored to the needs of the eventual homebuyers. Rather than limiting the number of lighting circuits, Intuitive Homes rationalised circuits at the lighting control panel to create, for example, a ‘room circuit’. A Crestron wall panel in the lounge and iPhone GUI help demonstrate what is possible to potential homebuyers.

The developer feels that the design has “given them a big advantage in a competitive market at a tough time for the industry”.

It’s Done! Technology

This category looks for excellence in design and installation as well as best practice in cabling on and to the rack; something It’s Done! Technology have achieved in

abundance. All incoming structured cables run along dedicated cable trays to the patching frames, with appropriate thought given to the bend radius of different cable types. High-grade patch panels have been labelled and separated based on the type of service to which they are assigned.

To enable easy identifi cation of cables, each end has been marked with heat-shrink, colour-coded labels and then grouped according to the specifi c types of service to which they are dedicated.

To maximise ventilation inside the rack housing, lacer bars of various sizes, cable ties, and Velcro tape have all been used, while cables have been cut to the exact lengths required.

Cool blue LED strips, fi tted to the outer frames and bases of the rack and activated by a PIR sensor when someone enters the Comms Room, give a futuristic feel to the installation.

The judges summed this up as “technically perfect”.

To create an effective multi-function room – home cinema, music lounge and card-games – a storage area has been built to house all the AV

equipment, along with 16 chairs. Behind the new false wall, hardware is stored in a 19” rack with a Blu-ray player and games console built-in to the door.

To accommodate the display of triptych artwork on the new wall, the three elements of which need to be mounted close together, Grahams had to design an alternative entry mechanism to a door handle. Access to the area is enabled through a proximity detector sensor, located behind one of the pictures, which activates an electric door mechanism through the swipe of a hand. To allow space for the door to swing open, a chain motor has been fi tted to the left hand picture to make it go forward by 100mm.

Grahams Hi-Fi impressed the judges with this “clever and challenging project”.

The fl oor standing speakers have a motorised platform to allow for variable listening experiences and for discreet storage. This project needed a D-box solution in the media room, however the client did not like the aesthetics of pre-made D-box friendly furniture. T&T Automation managed to come up with a solution that meant the D-Box was integrated into the preferred furniture and did not upset the aesthetic of the room.

This project saw the installation of a section of a marble wall that appears indistinguishable from the rest of the wall, but that can transform with the touch-of-a-button into a feature providing a stunning, fully-functional washbasin and mirror station.

When the Dawson’s Group couldn’t fi nd a suitable amplifi er product for Marine use, they created their own. Their fi rst version proved so popular, that they have now refi ned the design and have a range of amplifi ers.

This clever project installed an AV system and TV in the centre of the bedroom, with the TV able to turn 180 degrees, so that the owner could watch it from both sides of a grand master bedroom, and still get surround sound.

This innovative project created an easy-to-use system for a 15 year old girl with dexterity problems, which meant she could open and close windows, blinds, curtains, operate lights, call a nurse and simple control for music and TV.

Design Logistics UK were asked to install a projector for the cinema room upon a simple shelf within a separate store room. They used a bracket to which the projector could be mounted with suffi cient space to allow air to fl ow, allowed adjustment for both pitch & yaw, and included a security bolt.

Smartcomm integrated a concierge intercom door entry system to the prestigious One Hyde Park development. The state-of-the-art software, programmed with wall mounted Crestron touch-panels, features various options to serve the residents, including transferring a call to concierge, and contacting concierge directly from within the apartment.
