CHRIST THE KING EPISCOPAL CHURCH APRIL 2016 Our Faith, Our Story History does not determine our fate, but our future wi be found in the past For the past few weeks, I have been thinking a lot about our place in history of the church. Part of this is due to the research I am collecting for our new class (see sidebar on left), but my interest in Church history has also been piqued by work on behalf of the Diocese’s Academic Committee. Every winter, the Episcopal Church conducts the General Ordination Exam (or GOE) for those about to be ordained as priests. The three day long exam covers six canonical areas: Holy Scripture, Christian Theology, Christian Ethics and Moral Theology, The Practice of Ministry, History of the Christian Church, and Christian Worship. As a member of the Academic Committee, I help to read these essays to assist in the evaluation of these ordinands. And while history is only overtly the subject of one area, reading the exams made it clear this history pervades any discussion of the Church. Our Faith, Our Story History does not determine our fate, but our future will be found in the past For the past few weeks, I have been thinking a lot about our place in history of the church.

Theology—which is merely a talk about how we think about God—isn’t made out of whole cloth. Like any other tradition, theology is developed over time—sometimes we measure this in years, other times we measure centuries.

CHRIST THE KING EPISCOPAL CHURCH APRIL 2016

Can we move forward by looking back? Reflecting on the history of the Church for these past few weeks, I was drawn to a realization that as Episcopalians in the Anglican tradition, that we are a somewhat backward lot. Now, I don’t mean that we are theological neanderthals…far from it! But when our tradition is faced with a choice, our instincts often value tradition over novelty. This was made abundantly clear by John Jewel, a theologian who was active during the English Reformation between King Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth I. As the Church of England swung like a pendulum between the Roman Catholic and Protestant poles of thought, there was a great deal of discussion over the topic of authority: Who had it? Where was this authority derived? And what was our responsibility to obey it? To simplify the debate, those who were sympathetic to the Roman Catholic position maintained the Pope’s authority to interpret scripture (especially Matthew chapter 16, where Jesus gives Peter the “keys” to the Kingdom). Unlike Luther and Calvin who instead allowed the individual the authority to interpret scripture in the midst of the community of the Church, John Jewel, however, argued for a different authority: tradition. Writing in 1562, Jewel both created and affirmed the Anglican understanding of tradition: “It is true we have departed from the Roman Catholics. But yet for all this, from the primitive church, from the apostles, and from Christ, we have not departed…Let them compare our churches and theirs together, and they shall see that themselves have most shamefully gone from the apostles, and we most justly have gone from them.” For close to five centuries, our tradition has led an experiment to see if it is possible to progress theologically while preserving the best traditions of our past. As our recent history has shown, this is approach is far from easy—but these challenges are a testament to the men and women who value our tradition’s future as much as its past. No one can anticipate the questions or problems of tomorrow, but I am comforted by our approach to these inquiries. As Episcopalians, as Anglicans, as Christians, we seek to capture the ancient faith and practices of the Apostles. We seek the future in our history.
