Prayerful Waiting

’ve finally learned that there is a way to wait prayerfully! Of course, it’s difficult

and involves a degree of anguish and the ability to turn things over to God. But in the end it brings peace, humility and authentic hope.

When things were shutting down and Michigan bishops issued their Pastoral Directive that all church worship and other functions would cease, I held onto a vision of our reunion once it was all over. The vision involved lots of hugging and handshaking and a return to all that we were leaving behind. It’s now six weeks later and we are still locked out of our church.

That’s not all. It’s now clear now that, when we do open, it will be in the midst of pandemic-fueled uncertainty. Things aren’t going to be the same, even when we resume worship. At least not for awhile.

As T.S. Eliot would have put it, I was hoping “for the wrong thing.” The bishop is busy putting together guidelines for worship after our quarantine ends. The worship is not going to be exactly what we might have been hoping for.

I

Thank goodness, prayerful waiting has taken me to a deeper place of acceptance and contentment, beyond initial expectations. T.S. Eliot was right!

there is yet faithBut the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.

I now see that, whatever form our worship takes and whatever restrictions on community we face, Jesus Christ will be at the center of it all. And it will be much finer than just fine. It will be joyous!

I’ve learned what T.S. Eliot was trying to tell us in East Coker:

So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.

So, my brothers and sisters, get ready to “dance!”

Happy Easter!!

EDUCATIONEDUCATIONPandemichis pandemic has taught me much about unexpected gifts. As a middle-aged

mother of three, I have found this time of “turning in” as warm a blessing as I could imagine. With three children growing up far too fast and becoming progressively more invested in extracurricular commitments, this absolutely uncomplicated, unobstructed time together is a rare gift I may never feel again. We learn together, laugh together at all hours of the day, play together, eat and prepare homemade meals together, create art and music together and work together on everything from walking the dog to the relentless demands of CDP (Cleaning During a Pandemic). The key, for our family, has been allowing the kids to be pivotal in setting the schedule; through this activity back in mid-March, we set the stage for co-operating most everything in our home, and it has taught us all much about flexibility and compromise. Unexepected gifts.

The kids are up at 7:30 and come down for breakfast once beds are made and rooms are neatened. School runs from 8:00 until noon, guided by digital meetings and posted assignments from their teachers at St. Mary School. As an educator myself, it is a joy to be intimately involved in their learning without having to be the one who sets the tasks and establishes the deadlines; I just get to coach and guide and enjoy all they’re learning! An unexpected gift.

After lunch, I issue a “Mom’s Challenge” – today it is a competition to see who can build the

tallest, free-standing tower using only 2 sheets of paper, 1 pipe cleaner, scissors and tape. I’m so excited! I use this time to try to meet the needs they may not be noticing – a speed walk up as many hills as possible in 15 minutes’ time to burn off pent-up energy; labeling a blank map of Europe and Asia accurately as a team to remind them what each has to contribute; or monitoring data on COVID confirmed cases and deaths around the world through tables they’ve each created so they can feel a sense of order if not control over what’s happening all around them.

Each afternoon includes music practice, free time, exercise, fresh air challenges, and cooking rotations. We have been so refreshed to have a family of friends with whom we share an ongoing treasure hunt at McSauba; we hide items in the park and write poetic clues for the family to use to find the treasure and then they do the same for us! We have never seen each other there, but we feel excited and connected in a special way as we discover all the beauty around us. An unexpected gift.

Evenings are so lovely without a hectic schedule to pull us apart and create undue stress. We eat a home-cooked meal together without fail. We play fiercely competitive card games, hold backgammon tournies and always end the day with quiet reading. Dan and I have not missed one night of sneaking in a walk together since March 16 (unprecedented for us, but a long-held, simple dream of ours). An unexpected gift.

EDUCATIONEDUCATIONPandemicEach of us has taken such joy in being able to help my parents, who have done so much for us for so long. While we miss their hugs so much we can feel the ache, we have enjoyed mulptile daily phone calls, blowing kisses from their porches through the windows, and cooking up treats for one another that are sent via “Dan Post,” as Dan is our designated shopper and delivery man. Even though my parents are fully capable of taking care of themselves, their concession to accept our shopping and delivery help has allowed us to feel necessary, needed. An unexpected gift.

Finally, one of my favorite things about having my children home for school has been the in-depth, interesting discussions that have blossomed and which can continue unabated in the absence of schedule constraints. Among those discussions, perhaps the most memorable has been one about the church. We have explored, together, what the church actually IS... is it the building? Is it the belief system? Is it the tradition? What the kids and I have discovered is this: the church, to us, is the people. It’s you! It’s the way we support and encourage one another. It’s how we pray for each other. It’s our nurturing of one another, from yummy treats and sustaining meals to letters written and smiles received. It’s the phone calls. It’s you. You are the church. Perhaps ironically, we’ve never felt closer to Christ Episcopal Church. How lucky are we as a church family to find that, when we are kept physically from one another, our connections deepen? Discovering how much we miss all of you – now that is an incredible gift.

(Continued From Page Three)

At Easter time, when we are sharing the disciples’ sense of unexpected joy in the midst of sadness, fear and death, I hope you find countless sources of unexpected joy wherever you are, in whatever ways you find yourselves alone, as we all have some version of isolation right now. And please remember, as our little family in our little home is ensconced in schoolwork and kept away from you, we have never felt so close to you, such big closeness and big community. This pandemic has given us a perfect opportunity to learn to “be the church” for each other, for our community, for the world. You are our church. We are so grateful for this unexpected joy.

erhaps by the time you read this, our current Scholarship Ministry Team will

have arrived at the names of three scholarship applicants, for whom Christ Episcopal Church will offer each a $1,000.00 gift to begin post secondary study in the Fall, 2020.

Nineteen applications were received from Boyne City, Charlevoix, and East Jordan High School Seniors who expect to begin college or vocational/technical studies later this year. Most applicants declared admission to colleges and universities in Michigan, although two applicants received admission to out-of-state schools.

The Grade Point Averages, and SAT scores of the student applicants indicate high scholastic achievement and each submitted a personal statement summarizing educational goals as well as the impact he/she expects to have as a result of pursuing higher education.

The current scholarship ministry team remains as diligent in their reviews as did past team members of Christ Episcopal during their terms of involvement. We continue to help students who especially need financial support.

Construction

Coming

s with much in our world, construction on our Parish Hall and columbarium have

come to a halt over the past several weeks since this kind of construction is not essential. Just prior to the limitations going in effect, we took delivery of a chandelier that will adorn the columbarium area.

The project will certainly continue when non-essential travel and construction are permitted to resume but the completion timeline at this point is very uncertain. Originally, we had hoped for a mid-June completion but we should presume construction work will continue throughout the summer. As I learn more from our construction team, I will keep you informed in the Red Door and I appreciate your patience as we all deal with these unique times.

SUNDAYSUNDAYIN MAY

First

t can be difficult to pay attention to television news as reporting about Covid-19

dominates the broadcasts. To watch and listen to the dire straits of reporting by talking heads who quote the numbers of confirmed cases, deaths, and who recite what to do, or what not to do while waiting for a curve to flatten and fall, can strike our last nerve.

If you persist through 30 minutes of video features, you sometimes see a gauntlet of blue or yellow gowned healthcare PEOPLE appear on screen and then, the singing starts! ‘Here Comes the Sun’; lyrics and musical composition by the Beatles, resound in chorus at the sight of other PEOPLE; patients who have been at death’s door coming away from Intensive Care. Or so we think that’s what the healthcare helpers are singing. Perhaps if the lyrics appeared onscreen, we’d see that they’re singing, ‘Here Comes the Son’ in a non-profit-making parody of the 1969 release on the Abbey Road album. It is ours only to wonder why PEOPLE who have struggled to their last breath, now live on! In an email message to Christ Church members on Monday, April 20, Father Tom asked, ‘what are the better angels of our nature?’ He guides readers to Paul’s Letter to the Galatians to help identify the fruit of the Spirit. Indeed, Here Comes the Son!

As we continue to assemble as members of Christ Church, a First Sunday reflection for May is a ‘virtual’ lesson of finding, rediscovering, reaffirming the fruit of the Spirit in ourselves as Christian believers.. Re-read Father’s email to identify nine Christian traits, or find them in Galatians 5: 22 through 25.:

But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness; gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Do you have, or long for the fruit of the Spirit? Close your eyes and allow the Spirit to come into your awareness. As you proceed through your virtual time in First Sunday‘ ‘Do things….because of who you are’.

ttention all summer friends and year-round residents! With all this

unexpected sheltering in place, you just might be cleaning and weeding through things a bit more than usual. If that’s the case - and you’re looking for a philanthropic way to put donations to outstanding use - please consider Sparkle and Shine. Before you pack up for the trek up or begin preparing for summer in Charlevoix and all that comes with it, we would like to offer you a special opportunity to lighten your load for the good of the church. Please consider gathering some items to contribute to our Sparkle and Shine sales event, which raises money for local charity and the ECW. You can join us in making the world a better place... starting right here in northern Michigan.

The biennial Sparkle and Shine event was a huge success in its inaugural year, 2017. The 2019 event was even more so. We doubled our money in 2019, raising more than $5000! Our next Sparkle and Shine will be August 21, 2021, but we’re hoping to collect many wonderful donations this summer! (And we’ve got some fabulous items already!)

ear Friends,

On Wednesday April 15, 2020, Susan Flanders received a letter from Women’s Resource Center that announced due to the pandemic it is with “heavy hearts” the decision had to be made to cancel the 2020 “Women Can Women Do” luncheon. As you know ECW has supported this luncheon by decorating a luncheon table for

the last six years. ECW committed to decorate a luncheon table and will send that dollar amount to support the Women’s Resource Center. Many of the survivors being helped need a safe home in this/their time of crises and the luncheons held at Castle Farms raised over $30,000 each year for this purpose. With love, – Betty Stephen

John 13:34 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” We’re not being asked if we will love one another, instead we are commanded to do so!

It is in this vain a few of our CEC family took to the road to love one another from a distance! There was some pretty fancy art work, singing, blowing kisses and many “I love you’s” while we stopped at parishioner’s homes on April 17. Those who were visited were Peggy Natterman, Jean Loper, Lea and Roger Peak and Lily, Ann Puffpaff, Ruth Willis and Deb and Gary Stutzman.
