■ From Grand Conversations to IndependentPractice: How do we get there from here?

Many of us are amazed at the depth of children’sconversations in response to whole-group readalouds. But where do we go from here? Do chil-dren respond in the same thoughtful ways in theirown reading? Debbie will focus on the importanceof modeling, explicit teaching, and a variety ofpurposeful ways we can guide students towardindependence.

■ The Thoughtful Use of Time and Structure

Most of us have large blocks of time for literacylearning. How might we best use this time to meetthe needs of all our students? We’ll focus on pre-dictable structures, teaching children how tomake wise, purposeful choices when it comes to

book selection, the art of conferring, and a varietyof response options that help children constructmeaning and enhance understanding in a varietymeaningful ways.

Now that we’ve increased our nonfiction libraries,how can we teach children howto access this type of text?How can we help themremember and understandnew learning, as well assynthesize it for themselvesand others? We’ll focus onthese questions and more...

Debbie Miller has taught primary grades inthe Denver Public Schools for thirty years. She was mostrecently at Slavens Elementary School, where HappyReading! – three videos that accompany her book,Reading with Meaning, were taped. In her book andtapes, Debbie takes you beyond comprehension instruction,and shows how she sustains a thoughtful primary readingprogram that challenges and supports readers of all abilitiesand needs.Currently, Debbie works as a private consultant withschools and districts on long-range planning and develop-ment of literacy programs.
