Debbie will focus on the importance of modeling, explicit teaching, and a variety of purposeful ways we can guide students toward independence. The Thoughtful Use of Time and Structure Most of us have large blocks of time for literacy learning. How might we best use this time to meet the needs of all our students? We’ll focus on pre- dictable structures, teaching children how to make wise, purposeful choices when it comes to book selection, the art of conferring, and a variety of response options that help children construct meaning and enhance understanding in a variety meaningful ways. From Convention Notebooks to Wonder Boxes: Teaching Kids about Informational Text in the Primary Grades Now that we’ve increased our nonfiction libraries, how can we teach children how to access this type of text? How can we help them remember and understand new learning, as well as synthesize it for themselves and others? We’ll focus on these questions and more... December 1: Ramada, Mt. Laurel • December 2: Holiday Inn, Newark 6 Debbie Miller has taught primary grades in the Denver Public Schools for thirty years. She was most recently at Slavens Elementary School, where Happy Reading! – three videos that accompany her book, Reading with Meaning, were taped. In her book and tapes, Debbie takes you beyond comprehension instruction, and shows how she sustains a thoughtful primary reading program that challenges and supports readers of all abilities and needs. Currently, Debbie works as a private consultant with schools and districts on long-range planning and develop- ment of literacy programs.
