Welcome to the East Midlands Skills Development Prospectus 2021/22
Welcome to the East Midlands SDN Prospectus 2021/22! Following a somewhat turbulent and unprecedented year, the SDN had to adapt with all our workshops and courses being delivered virtually last year. This was a great success with many delegates commenting that they really benefited from virtual training and were able to attend SDN courses for the first time due to not having to worry about travel and childcare arrangements. Taking into account the feedback received, we will be delivering a mix of virtual and face to face training this year with face to face training starting later in the year due to the current circumstances and uncertainty going forward at this time. We are delighted to announce that we will be launching the Midlands Digital Health Skills Development Network in the East Midlands from mid-April onwards to run alongside our already established Finance and Procurement Networks, and we look forward to welcoming our Digital Health colleagues into the network. This year we will be offering some new courses as well as our popular regular courses – new workshops this year include Being an Effective Presenter, How to hold tough conversations respectfully, Agile Project Management and Managing the Tender Process just to name a few. Following feedback regarding the bite size Excel modules, we will also be offering new titles in addition to the popular modules from last year. The programme follows the three main themes to come out of the #OneFinance survey, which are equally relevant to Procurement and Digital health staff, providing tailored learning and development events to support Continuing Professional Development (CPD). As every year, we have reviewed our training providers to ensure the highest quality training at the most competitive prices. The offer outlined in this prospectus is not exhaustive, so do please get in touch if there is a training need you would like to discuss. Thanks, as always, for your continued support of the East Midlands Skills Development Network – please do let us have your feedback on any aspect of the offer in order for us to make it even better in the future.

Reports can come in lots of different formats, whilst a formal report writing style may often be appropriate (e.g. for governance and providing an audit trail), there is also a need to use a more succinct and engaging style for other kinds of report. This workshop will focus on the generic features of effective report writing, with tips and techniques that can be applied to a range of reports both formal and informal. (Please note that it is about the written element of a report, so it relates to the interpretation of data rather than putting together the data report itself.)

Sustainability for a Greener NHS Climate change poses a major threat to our health as well as our planet. The environment is changing, that change is accelerating, and this has direct and immediate consequences for our patients, the public and the NHS. This is why the NHS has launched the ‘For a greener NHS’ programme, working with our staff, hospitals and our partners. We want to build on the great work being done by trusts across the country, sharing ideas on how to reduce the impact on public health and the environment, save money and – eventually – go net carbon zero. “While the NHS is already a world leader in sustainability, as the biggest employer in this country and comprising nearly a tenth of the UK economy, we’re both part of the problem and part of the solution. Indeed if health services across the world were their own country, they’d be the fifth-largest emitter on the planet. That’s why we are mobilising our 1.3 million staff to take action for a greener NHS, and it’s why we’ll be working with the world’s leading experts to help set a practical, evidence-based and ambitious route map and date for the NHS to reach net zero.” Sir Simon Stevens, NHS Chief Executive Click here for further information and to get involved

How the Money Flows within the NHS Akeeban Maheswaran, a doctor and member of the Future Focused Finance Close Partnering Delivery Group, has produced an animation showing how money flows around the NHS. This could be a useful tool for anyone needing to explain the complexities of NHS financing in a short, snappy way. The animation is designed to be useful to anyone who works in the NHS, particularly non-finance people (which is where Dr Maheswaran has approached it from). To view the video please click here

Skills for Effective Report Writing
Reports can come in lots of different formats, whilst a formal report writing style may often be appropriate (e.g. for governance and providing an audit trail), there is also a need to use a more succinct and engaging style for other kinds of report. This workshop will focus on the generic features of effective report writing, with tips and techniques that can be applied to a range of reports both formal and informal. (Please note that it is about the written element of a report, so it relates to the interpretation of data rather than putting together the data report itself.)
The aim of this workshop is to give delegates a range of tools that can be used to write reports that meet reader requirements and aid effective decision making.
Delegates will be able to: • Define the purpose of a report and choose the most appropriate style and level of
detail • Write with the readers and the decisions they need to make in mind • Use an approach that is well-structured, succinct and engaging • Create reports that will achieve the intended outcome
The workshop will cover: • What are the elements of an Effective Report? • Purpose (what is the ask of the reader, what outcome is required from the report?) • How people read and what they are looking for (time pressures, volume of papers,
navigating, highlighting, filters) • Structure (sequence, layout, getting best effect from templates, keeping examples
