Specialist Support for the Healthcare and Bioscience Sector in the East MidlandsAnnual Review 2009-2010

Page 2: Medilink East Midlands Report 2010

However, major events affecting the region - I am referring particularly to the impending closure of emda, the regional development agency and AstraZeneca’s Charnwood facility -have created an uncertain environment in the sector.

In the short term, the Board believes that contracts in place will secure not just continuation but an increase in iNet activities - supported by the European Regional Development Fund as well as emda. The Board and Executive team are very focussed on ensuring long term industry support.

The new Government has confirmed its backing for the life sciences industry, which is clearly a priority for the UK economy’s longer term success; although it is not clear how this will be provided. As sources of funding change, we will need to pursue whatever avenues necessary to sustain Medilink’s role.

The loss of AstraZeneca’s excellent facilities in Loughborough will be a major economic blow for the region, as will be the loss of so many highly trained people. We will do all we can to support the continuation of the site in any form that will provide business opportunities for the industry, whilst helping people searching for new opportunities.

Meanwhile, membership of Medilink has continued to increase, indicating the potentially growing importance of the industry and its need for assistance, especially at the SME level.

On this optimistic note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board members for their continuing support in what, I am sure, will be a most challenging year in 2011.

Introduction

Medilink East Midlands is a founding member of

The key objective of Medilink East Midlands is to help the life science sector develop and grow across the region. In this respect, last year has undoubtedly been the most successful in its history. The influence of the Healthcare and Bioscience iNet, now well established in its supportive role in innovation, is proving very beneficial.

CEO report

During the last year a seismic shift in the entire landscape for our sector has begun; the coalition government has instigated a new age of austerity that includes the abolition of regional development agencies, fundamental changes in the way business support will be provided, as well as in the commissioning of NHS services.

Then there is the formation of Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPS), Technology Innovation Centres (TICs) and the Regional Growth Fund (RGF), the full implications of which are still unclear - other than the need to start the acronym dictionary all over again......

These are, however, all challenges for the future, and looking back at the last year, it was another record breaking one in which we saw sound and continued growth in both our membership and the range of service offered. The first phase of our innovation programme, the iNet, was successfully completed in March and a not inconsiderable effort went into securing the continuation of the iNet and Phase 2 officially began in April, thanks to funding from emda and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

We remain the leader in developing business networks for life science companies. Our knowledge of industrial opportunities, academic and private research, and clinical developments, keeps on encouraging the commercialisation of new products, the development of new revenue streams, and diversification of activities for the benefit of the sector.

We also continue to have a primary role as advocates for small and medium sized life science businesses, and through MedilinkUK, we work with central government, the Department of Health and trade associations to influence national policy.

As the testing economic times unfold, there is no room to be complacent; however, Medilink East Midlands is set to continue its support for the life sciences sector in order to provide our companies with the best opportunities to succeed and be at the forefront of the recovery.

Sector initiatives

The Germinator programme - helping companies of the future to bloom

The Germinator Programme is a project aimed at supporting start-up healthcare technology firms and is being delivered by Medilink East Midlands in collaboration with BioCity Nottingham; part-financed by the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund.

It provides intensive support to businesses that would otherwise miss out because they are at the very earliest stages of development. The programme is being supported by four East Midlands universities; Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Leicester and Loughborough.

The Germinator aims to address a common problem for new companies at the cutting edge of technology; namely that the inventors behind the business have excellent technical knowledge, but may lack the business skills needed to make the initiative a commercial success.

Each company receives a package of support including funding for a ‘venture champion’ who will drive forward the commercialisation of their innovative new products and services. The venture champion is carefully selected to meet the specific needs of the company and is a dynamic entrepreneur with a proven business track record.

The Germinator has already supported eight companies and there is a strong pipeline of applicants waiting to join the programme.

Wei-Jen Lo of Orthogem

Support for Orthogem

A manufacturer of patented synthetic bone, Orthogem turned to the iNet for help with issues surrounding surgeon acceptance and has since benefited from wide ranging advice and an Innovation Support Grant, as well as help with obtaining regulatory approval and generating publicity. With iNet assistance it has also developed an all-in-one sterile blending/delivery device.

Phase 1 Success

With its small team, the iNet helped over 400 businesses progress their innovation projects and nearly a quarter of these benefited from either the iNet’s own subsidised innovation support or grants from other sources identified by the iNet.

Around 25 new products, services and processes have been introduced following iNet involvement. The iNet also helped more than 150 businesses link with the region’s universities. Over 100 jobs were created or safeguarded and in excess of 200 individuals developed new skills resulting from iNet activity.

With its £750,000 collaborative research and development budget, the iNet supported 13 projects involving 32 teams of collaborators across the region. Ten of an anticipated 25 academic papers have already been published as a result of work undertaken. These established collaborations have gone on to attract additional funding of £6.5m, with even more expected to follow in the near future.

Through these activities and its ability to generate publicity, the iNet has helped raise the profile of healthcare and bioscience in general and the region’s businesses in particular to a national level and beyond.

£750,000 keeps investment fluid

The UK’s main manufacturer of dialysis fluids, Fresenius Medical Care (UK) Ltd, needed to secure investment in plant refurbishment. Looking to access grant funding, they approached the iNet. Support from an iNet adviser helped them gain a £100,000 grant from Grant for Business Investment through emda, alongside a company investment of £650,000.

Helping business to succeed

Medilink East Midlands has enjoyed continued success with membership increasing by more than 30 per cent. This growth to over 150 members is thanks to an ongoing commitment to supporting life science companies in the region and the introduction of valuable new benefits.

Networking and information services remain core activities delivered both electronically and via personalised one-to-one support. Our newsletter is circulated to over 4,200 contacts and the regular updates on regulatory, clinical and procurement issues continue to increase in popularity. Notification of relevant commercial opportunities are also helping members to meet their full potential.

We are committed to providing value-for-money services and new membership benefits introduced this year include:

• Subscription to NHS InfoSource, a weekly newsletter that provides valuable insights and understanding of the NHS (www.nhis.info).

• Access to the Business Insights portfolios for healthcare, drug discovery, drug delivery, pharmaceutical outsourcing and diagnostics (www.globalbusinessinsights.com).

• Continued Professional Development (CPD) certification for delegates attending our events (www.cpduk.co.uk).

Medilink also secured its first corporate sponsor, Berryman, a Nottingham based commercial law firm. Berryman’s sponsorship ensures continued support to Medilink members.

Furthermore, Medilink continues to act in an advocacy role for its members by actively working to promote their interests at a national and international level through its own lobbying and the MedilinkUK Forum.

“The help and support we have received from Medilink EM has been vital in enabling our business to move forward and it would be very damaging to lose that support.” Matt Green, Managing Director, Developmedica Ltd.

“Medilink provide an invaluable support service that enhances the chance of an idea becoming an innovation. Innovation is one of the main drivers that will enable the UK to strengthen its economy both on a national and international level. In my opinion the “best thing the government can do” is continue its support for the Medilinks so that the UK can benefit from the success of its members” Jonathan Richards, Managing Director, Medibord Ltd.

Innovation Day WinnersExpanding networks, increasing knowledge

The last financial year saw the events programme grow considerably with over two events held per month, averaging 48 delegates per event, and benefiting 1,388 people from 466 different organisations. All this whilst achieving an impressive average quality rating of 84%.

The comprehensive events programme has been developed in response to demand from businesses, ensuring it is both practical and relevant. It included events aimed at facilitating the exchange of knowledge between businesses, academia and clinicians, as well as expanding the network of contacts regionally, nationally and internationally.

These networking events have been complemented by more intensive training seminars and workshops focused on the latest developments in specialist areas of healthcare. These have proved invaluable to companies wishing to educate and develop their staff and we were delighted to be able to introduce CPD accreditation for our members attending these training sessions.

The diverse programme included several nationally profiled collaborative events with the support of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the British Dental Trade Association (BDTA) and BioCity,as well as multi-national companies such as Boots and 3M.

The highlight of the events calendar was once again Innovation Day, which continues to go from strength to strength. This year it was staged at Pride Park, Derby and attracted over 225 delegates. The day was rounded off with the awards dinner where members were honoured for their achievements.

FDAS sees exports grow

One company to have benefited from the export expertise offered by Medilink is Nottingham-based Food and Drug Analytical Services (FDAS) Ltd.

The company provides a range of contract laboratory services and has been exporting for the last four years. As part of a wide range of support from Medilink and UKTI it has seen export sales rise from 2% of turnover to 11%. Exports are expected to increase further as new markets in, India, China, Ireland, the USA and South Africa are explored.

Exploring export opportunities - developing new markets

Thanks to close collaborative links with a number of organisations in the UK and overseas, and especially UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), Medilink East Midlands has played an important role in supporting the region’s life science companies in their efforts to explore opportunities across the globe.

During the last financial year, we have been involved in a wide range of export-related activity, focused on both traditional European and North American markets as well as the emerging markets.

Highlights in the traditional markets included helping to showcase the region’s expertise in the healthcare sector at Medica, the largest exhibition of its kind in Europe. Four East Midlands companies, all new to exporting, took part and every one reported increased interest in their products and two have since secured significant contracts from overseas clients as a direct result of exhibiting.

Medilink also recruited a record 20 UK companies to attend the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) annual conference in Los Angeles.

Activities focused on newer markets included hosting a trade mission from Korea that involved six pharmaceutical companies engaging in one-to-one meetings with East Midlands firms. We also hosted a delegation of nine senior executives from Singapore, along with British Embassy Commercial Officers from the Asia Pacific region who met with more than 20 UK companies. Closer to home, Medilink has forged strong links with healthcare clusters in Poland resulting in the development of several collaborative projects.

During the year Medilink also helped to organise the UK Government’s Office of Life Sciences roadshow, working with UKTI, we attracted over 100 delegates to the East Midlands event – the second highest attendance in the UK.Export sales

increase by 1,000%

Thanks to support from Medilink and UKTI, Nottingham-based R5 Pharmaceuticals has recently increased its annual export sales by a staggering 1000%. An achievement that saw them take the national honour for export at the Medilink UK awards.

Through business support from Medilink we have been able to access many international markets which would have been impossible otherwise.”John T Kelly, Managing Director, Mediskills Ltd
