"Catholic Tidbits" Why does the priest begin Mass with “The Sign of the Cross”? "Mass begins with the sign of the Cross" because the entire rite takes place "within the space of the Most Ho-ly Trinity". Pope Francis explained this at the General Audience in the Paul VI Hall on Wednesday morning, 20 December [2017], as he reflected on the significance of the Introductory Rites of the Eucharistic celebration. Catholic Quote: “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd.” Flannery O'Connor, twentieth cen-tury Catholic writer. This is a play on John 8:32, You will know the truth and the truth will make you free, except we see some of Flannery;s wit and wisdom entwined. Knowing the truth sets us apart from the rest of the world. Knowing the truth changes us. Knowing the truth not only frees us from the bonds of this world, but makes us appear different to the world, makes us seem odd. And that is a very good thing.

Bishop W. Shawn McKnight has issued the following statement: Recent statements from some bishops of the Catholic Church and subsequent news stories on these statements have caused public confusion regarding the moral implica-tions of Catholics using the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. I affirm what the Holy See, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Missouri province of Catholic bishops and my own moral analysis have concluded, primarily based on our obligation to serve the common good: In the current situa-tion of a pandemic, Catholics may in good conscience uti-lize any of the vaccines currently available, even those de-rived in an unethical manner, to protect themselves, as well as to avoid the serious risk to vulnerable persons and to society resulting from remaining unvaccinated. If a person concludes he or she cannot be vaccinated, whether for health reasons or if their own moral analysis is different from the Church, they are morally obliged to do everything they can to prevent transmission of the coronavirus and avoid any risk to the health of those who cannot be vac-cinated. As Pope Francis reminds us, in receiving these vaccines we are truly showing love for our neighbor and for God, which is the core teaching of our faith.

The Ladies Sodality will have their next meeting on September 14, 2021 beginning at 1 p.m. and will be held in the Catholic Center. Meetings are held from September through May of each year. All meetings will be the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 1 p.m. All ladies of the church are considered members of the Sodality. The Sodality provides funeral dinners for parishioners, they also sponsor a child from Guatemala. Monies sent to this child are used for his education, clothing, and living expenses. The Sodality also does fund raisers such as catering dinners. Please plan on attending the next meeting.

THE MESSIAH FORETOLD Today’s story of the cure of a deaf man with a speech impediment is a good example of how much is con-tained in a simple miracle story. The Greek word mogi-lalos appears only here in all of the New Testament. It is a technical term referring to someone with a stam-mer. It is also used only once in the entire Jewish scrip-tures, in the passage that we read today as our first read-ing from Isaiah. Clearly, by his choice of this precise word Mark wants us to recognize that what Jesus is do-ing is the fulfillment of what Isaiah had predicted cen-turies earlier. In fact, Mark wants us to recognize that Jesus is the Messiah foretold by Isaiah and the other Jewish prophets of old. The word ephphatha, “be opened,” used to describe the restoration of the man’s speech, is another example of a subtle allusion to an earlier prophecy. This time the prophecy in question is from Ezekiel, when he foretells that in the messianic age, “your mouth shall be opened to speak” (24:26). The sophistication of Mark’s narra-tive is further revealed when we realize that there are multiple levels within a single reference. Mark not only draws our attention back to Israel’s prophetic past, he also points to the initiatory practice of his contemporar-ies by his mention of such things as spittle, touching of ears, and the use of the word ephphatha, all of which were practices incorporated into the early Church’s baptismal ritual. We are in need of vocalists and musicians. Our current groups are struggling to provide music for all Masses. If you don’t want to be a “full time” member but are willing to help when we are shorthanded, we’d love to have you. Don’t want to be handed a Mass right off the bat, but want to work into it slowly, we’d love to have you. Sing in the school choir and are willing to work with a jr.high/high school choir, we’d love to have you. Play guitar, piano, or organ? Guess what? We’d love to have you! (Notice a theme? We'd love to have you!) Feel free to contact any of the current musicians or vocalists, or I can be reached at [email protected] .

Thank-You Paula Niemeier

For more than 40 years, the Diocese of Jefferson City and Catholic Charities have been welcoming refugees to their new homes in Missouri. As we prepare for the possible arri-val of refugees from Afghanistan, we will need community support more than ever. We are directing all requests from people who want to help to our website (https://cccnmo.diojeffcity.org/welcoming-afghan-refugees), where they can complete and submit the Afghan Refugee Assis-tance Form, indicating how they would like to help. Please share with anyone who would like to help with the response effort the link for our assistance form (URL is case-sensitive): https://bit.ly/CCCNMO-Afghan-Refugees

We send our condolences to the family of Donald & Korenn Kemp.

They retired in Eldon and Korenn attended Mass at
