The FTI pilot is the only fully-bottom-up
measure in Horizon 2020 promoting
close-to-the-market innovation activities
that is open to all types of participants

• One common call, permanently open, 3 cut-offs per year
• Time-to-grant 6 months
• Will fund innovation actions (70%), grant up to €3m
• Will allow consortia of min. 3, max. 5 members —
mandatory industry involvement
• Impact criterion will have higher weighting in evaluations
• Budget: €200 mn for 2015/2016 (100 + 100) — ca. 100
projects with average EU contribution of €2m
• Future of pilot (beyond 2016) only decided after full evaluation
FTI Pilot Key Features
Eurostars
• Supports collaboration between research and innovative SMEs at a European level
• Can address any technology area, but must aim to develop a new product, process or service with a civilian purpose
• Projects must involve at least two participants from two different Eurostars member countries
• Academics and large companies welcome to participate in projects but must fund themselves
• Funding available: up to €360k per UK partner, 60% of eligible costs (75% for SMEs)
• Currently closed, next call deadline 5th March 2015
• Launched in April 2011, building on earlier schemes run by RDAs
• Single-company grants for proof of market projects, proof of concept or development of prototypes
• UP to a maximum of £250,000
• Purely for SMEs: around 90% are small or micro companies and 80% are less than 5 years old
• Evaluation of the previous schemes showed they returned an additional GVA of £9 per £1 spent
