Cats Protection Haslemere

Fiesta only shows her sweet side to her friends. Once he knows you, Wilkins loves a lap.

Nervous cats seeking understanding homes Nervous cats need patience and time to help them settle. They need quiet, calm house-holds, where they can settle at their own pace. Once you have earned their trust, the rewards are great, and they can form strong bonds with their owners. Do you think you could adopt a cat like Fiesta or Wilkins?

Welcome to another issue of the Guide & featured are many events to go to. It’s that time of year where we try to make the most of the long evenings, so I do hope you find something to enjoy. I am gradually meeting more people & discovering more places to go, but if you know of any clubs, societies, events or meetings that you would like to see included, do drop me a line. As a cat lover myself, I do appreciate all the work & care given by the Cats Protection near Haslemere. They always have furry friends looking for a home or for additional volunteers, so do give their page a look.

I hope you all are having a GREAT summer.

Best wishes,

Heather

HASLEMERE MUSEUM RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATIONHaslemere Educational Museum is delighted to announce it has received a donation of £5,000.

The generous donation has been used to buy upgraded IT equipment and software allowing the Museum to help promote its diverse collections to a wider audience.

The donation was made by ShareGift, a unique charity which specialises in accepting donations of shares. These donated shares generate funds to give to charities, guided by donor suggestion. Since 1996 they have given over £25 million to more than 2,500 charities.

The Museum was the chosen nominated charity of Graeme Nuttall OBE, a keen supporter of the work of the Museum and whose wife Elizabeth currently volunteers in the collection stores. Graeme received a prestigious award for Services to Employee Share Ownership at the ProShare Annual Awards ceremony last year. His award entitled Graeme to nominate a charity to receive a ShareGift donation and he chose the Haslemere Educational Museum.

Graeme Nuttall OBE, a partner at European law firm Fieldfisher said “It is great to see how my interest in employee share plans and employee ownership has helped Haslemere Museum upgrade some of its IT systems. I am keen that technology is harnessed to ensure the Museum’s many and varied collections may be studied and shared more widely”

Announcing the donation, Julia Tanner, Curator of Haslemere Museum said, “I would like to extend our deepest thanks to Graeme Nuttall, ProShare and ShareGift for this generous donation, allowing us to purchase much needed IT equipment and software. As an independent charity, we greatly rely on our supporters and donations are a tremendous help. They enable us to continue our service to the public and help see the Museum safeguarded for future generations”.

The Achilles is a very strong tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel. This in turn allows you to walk, run, jump and go up and downstairs. It has such a key role in lower limb functi on that it is oft en subject to over loading and can be a common site for injury. About 6% of relati vely inacti ve people may develop Achilles tendon problems at some point in their lifeti me. However, the chance of it developing is higher in athletes or sports people who do a lot of exercise. It can be a parti cularly persistent problem for some runners and oft en requires some medical interventi on.

The classic signs of an Achilles problem would be pain and swelling over the tendon itself which can extend up into the lower leg. As well as pain, there is oft en sti ff ness which is usually worse in the morning or aft er periods of inacti vity. It tends to improve as you move around on it or with some light acti vity during the day.

Achilles problems tend to develop because of over use or abnormal loading although they can be a result of direct trauma (eg; being hit by a supermarket trolley). As

you get older, the calf and tendon have a tendency to become less fl exible and therefore may be prone to over-stretching. Achilles tendinopathy is more likely to develop if you:

• Start exercising too much aft er a period of inacti vity

• Run in poor, unsupporti ve footwear

• Increase how far and how fast you run too quickly

• Add stair climbing or running uphill to your exercise routi ne

• Change the surface you run on

• Have weakness and/or ti ghtness of your calf muscles

• Have a tendency to roll your feet inwards as you run (Over-pronati on)

The type of treatment you may require will depend on the severity of the injury and the factors that have predisposed to it occurring in the fi rst instance. Symptoms may take 3-6 months to resolve but there are plenty of self help treatments available which may include:

• Reduce the amount of exercise you’re doing and how oft en you exercise.

• Wear a small heel raise in each shoe. This helps to reduce the stress on your Achilles tendon.

• Wear well padded and supporti ve shoes.

• Run or exercise on a soft running surface.

• Start a stretching program for your calf/Achilles tendons (*)

• Perform strengthening exercises for your calf/Achilles (*)

(* These programs are best advised by your physiotherapist.)

Achilles Tendon problems may sett le on their own and with self help but if your symptoms persist then you should see you GP or physiotherapist for advice. For further informati on please contact Healthfl ex on 01428 642577.

The Residential Nil Rate BandChristi ne Hanson discusses the new Inheritance Tax Allowance

25

Chiltlee Manor, Haslemere Road, Liphook GU30 7AZ 01428 722189christi [email protected] www.couchmanhanson.co.uk

Since April 2017, a new inheritance tax (IHT) allowance called the residenti al nil rate band (RNRB) has been in force, which aims to lower IHT bills for those leaving their home to children and grandchildren.

Existi ng nil rate bandCurrently everyone benefi ts from a nil rate band of £325,000. This means you can leave £325,000 on death, without att racti ng IHT. Anything over this amount will be charged at the current IHT rate of 40% unless gift ed to spouses, civil partners or chariti es.

Transfer of the nil rate bandBecause spouses and civil partners are tax exempt they are able to leave not only their enti re estate to each other tax free but also their nil rate band allowance. On second death therefore a total estate of £650,000 can be left tax free.

Residenti al nil rate band (RNRB)The new RNRB is available in additi on to the existi ng nil rate band; but only applies to property gift ed on death and as always, there are a number of restricti ons:

• the person must have died on or aft er 6 April 2017

• the person must have owned a property (or share of it), in which they have lived during their lifeti me

• the property must be inherited by ‘direct descendants’ on death i.e. children, step-children, adopted children, foster children, grandchildren and any of their spouses. NB If you don’t have children then you will not qualify for this new allowance.

• property held in trust may not apply, and;

• for an estate worth over £2million the RNRB will be reduced by £1 for every £2 so that an estate of £2.2million and over will not qualify.

Currently the maximum RNRB available is £100,000. This will increase annually, up to £175,000 by 2020.

What happens if I sell my house? If you downsize, or sell your property to cover nursing home fees, then it is possible to claim the RNRB on the previously owned property, but some restricti ons apply.

Working ExampleJohn dies in June 2017 leaving Janet, and daughter Sarah. John and Janet own jointly, a family home worth £600,000 and other assets of £300,000. John leaves everything to Janet.

Ownership of the house and other assets pass to Janet without any IHT being due (under the spousal exempti on), so John’s NRB and RNRB are unused.

Janet dies in September 2020 and leaves her whole estate to Sarah. Her estate on death has increased in value to £1million.

Janet’s estate can make use of her NRB £325,000 and, as she is leaving her home to Sarah (a ‘direct descendant’), her RNRB of £175,000. As John left everything to Janet, her executors can claim his unused NRB and RNRB. There is a total of £1m in nil rate bands; 2 x £325,000 and 2 x £175,000 and so no IHT payable.

This new legislati on is complex and to be sure your estate will benefi t you should take advice to ensure your Will is draft ed in a way that allows the RNRB to be claimed.

High Street Public Toilets Let’s Save ThemThe Town Council is very disappointed that Waverley Borough Council has decided to close our town centre toilets for budgetary reasons. We believe that a town the size and quality of Haslemere should have “basic human faciliti es” for the benefi t of all visitors to our Town.

We are parti cularly anxious to save this facility especially for our disabled residents who would otherwise be disadvantaged by having to fi nd which local business premises have toilets that meet their requirements. Our “on-line peti ti on has resulted in over 600 signatures in two weeks!!!

The Town council will be considering taking over this facility from Waverley Borough Council at their meeti ng on Thursday July 13th.

The Mayor would value any comments of support either on his Facebook page or directly to [email protected].

Town Council Over Amenity Space MaintenanceHaslemere Town Council have agreed with Waverley Borough Council to take over the maintenance of key open spaces within the town for a trial period of 12 months as they believe that they have not previously been maintained as we would wish them to be. The green areas concerned are St Christopher’s Green, Town Meadow, land adjacent to Weydown Road car park and Clements Corner.

Waverley will be paying the Town Council to carry out the maintenance so there are no additi onal costs to our residents. The Town Council has already received favourable comments from some residents since they took over this work in April 2017.

Council Meeti ngsMembers of the public are always welcome to att end Council meeti ngs. Look out for Agendas posted on the Town noti ceboards and on the Town Council’s website. All meeti ngs are held in the Council Chamber in the Town Hall. Forthcoming meeti ngs are as follows:

• Thursday 17th August, 7pm – Planning & Highways

• Thursday 24th August, 7pm – Ameniti es

• Thursday 7th September, 7pm – Grants

• Thursday 14th September, 7pm – Planning & Highways

• Thursday 28th September, 7pm – Full Council

• Thursday 5th October, 7pm – Ameniti es

• Monday 9th October , 7pm – Finance & Audit

• Monday 12th October, 7pm – Planning & Highways

01428 772310 [email protected] www.intercoifaservices.co.uk

InterCo IFA Services Ltd is a locally based fi nancial advisory fi rm providing advice on pensions, investments and inheritance tax planning.

InterCo IFA Services is an independent company and has access to a wide range of products to suit every need.

InterCo IFA Services off er a review of clients’ existi ng plans and benefi ts, including:

• Making use of ISA Allowances,

• Capital Gains Tax Allowances,

• Pension Allowances,

• GiKs,

• Requirements for Auto-Enrolment,

• Venture Capital Trusts,

• Use of Business Relief.

The changes announced in the 2014 Budget were designed with the purpose of giving individuals greater fl exibility to access their Defi ned Contributi ons (DC) pension savings. They were confi rmed in the Taxati on of Pensions Bill published in October 2014 and took eff ect from 6th April 2015.

If you were aged over 55 on 6th April 2015 you can take advantage of the increased fl exibility but obtaining professional advice is essenti al to make sure you get an informed analysis of your parti cular situati on.

This is a case study of a client who approached Graham last year:

Our client received a pile of pension paperwork which made litt le sense to him. Following a review we discovered he actually had four pensions and each diff erent pension provider needed him to make a decision on taking benefi ts. Our client found this all very confusing and needed help sorti ng it all out.

Aft er our initi al meeti ng, we worked out some potenti al opti ons taking into account his circumstances and objecti ves. The providers were asked to clarify the benefi t details and available opti ons. The client was surprised at the fl exibility aff orded to him having taken

into account the pension rule changes from 2014 and 2015. He did not realise that he could only take the benefi t of one of his pensions as a tax freelump sum. This fund was not accruing any further benefi t, interest or growth and was being eroded by infl ati on. Having sought advice our client was then able to use the new rules to his advantage. It enabled him to increase his existi ng income as and when needed rather than the restricti ve benefi ts being imposed upon him by his previous scheme.

The new pension rules provide much wider choice for those building up their pension funds and considering what to do with their reti rement planning.

• Auto Enrolment and Tax Planning advice are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority

• A pension is a long term investment. The fund value may fl uctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at reti rement, future interest rates and legislati on.

Call me if you would like to know how I can help you with your personal reti rement planning.

RHS Garden Wisley to host Surrey Sculpture Society’s20th Anniversary Sculpture Trail

The Surrey Sculpture Society (SSS) will be staging one of the largest Sculpture Trails in the country at RHS Garden Wisley from 19th August - 24th September. The trail will feature the works of both new emerging and highly acclaimed established sculptors, showing over 80 sculptures set within the internati onally renowned gardens.

Henriett e Van der Does, Chair of the SSS commented: ‘2017 is a very special occasion for the Surrey Sculpture Society at RHS Wisley since we organised our fi rst ever show in 1997, now 20 years ago. The original trail consisted of 55 pieces by 27 diff erent arti sts and was received with mixed reacti ons from the public (‘what was sculpture doing in a place for plants?’) Since then, much has changed. Today we will be showing over 80 pieces by as many as 68 diff erent sculptors, with a great variety in subject matt er and sizes, supported by a huge following of many loyal art lovers of the

sculpture trail. I am very proud to be the Chair of the SSS in this signifi cant year and I hope that the trail will again exceed its successes of the previous years, both in the warm recepti on from the public as well as its sales.’

Teresa Marti n the SSS Exhibiti on Manager for the event commented:

‘Our new Sculpture Trail for 2017 walks elegantly up Batt leston Hill, just a short way to the BowesLyon Rose Garden enjoying the iconic mixed borders, through the scented climbers on the pergolas and descends again to the water gardens. We hope that visitors will be struck by the contrast in styles and materials produced by our talented sculptors. We will be following in the footsteps of the very fi rst SSS trial at Wisley, 20 years ago, when Don Foxley’s sculpture, ‘Naissance’, stood at the top of Batt leston Hill. For this year’s trail Don has created a sister piece especially for this anniversary and a similar half sized form called ‘Enlightenment’.

‘New members, Denise Jaques’s, ‘Shards’ sparkle with vibrant designs and Adam Warwick Hall’s striking mechanical animal combinati ons cast an original slant for the sculpture by the lake. Some strong spacial statements are made by the dynamic metal pieces, including Julia Grose’s

copper and steel ‘Bullrushes’ which could be used as a spectacular water feature. Visitors can also meet the sculptors at the end of the trail and discuss their favourites and fi nd out about the techniques used.’

The many talented emerging arti sts and gift ed professional

sculptors within the Society, create aff ordable and original pieces that can form eye-catching focal points in gardens, conservatories or interiors. The sculptors

work with a broad range of materials including stone, metal, bronze, resin, glass, ceramic, wood and found objects.

The Sculpture Trail will give visitors to RHS Garden Wisley

the chance to discover a wide range of sculptures located throughout the grounds of this world class garden, with all sculptures for sale.

Stephanie Fudge, Head of RHS Garden Wisley, commented: ‘We are thrilled to host the Surrey Sculpture Society Trail again this year at RHS Garden Wisley. The arti sti c exhibit provides our visitors will the opportunity to view inspirati onal sculptures within the beauti ful setti ng of the garden as the summer season comes to an end and autumn begins.’

Admission to the Sculpture Trail included in entrance to RHS Wisley.

The exhibiti on opens on 19th August and will run unti l 24th September.

Opening ti mes: Monday to Friday 10am – 6pm, Saturday – Sunday and Bank Holidays 9am – 6pm

The Atlanti c Railway - Brunel’s Vision by Ian Kennedy

The first hundred years or so of steam passenger ships across the North Atlantic and pursuit of that elusive Blue Riband. ‘Buy your ticket at Paddington Station and disembark in Boston or New York’, was Brunel’s plan. Even he would have been impressed by the century that followed of largely British triumph in finance, design,

engineering, and artistic (including gastronomic!) skills which produced the magnificent procession of ever grander and majestic ocean liners. Courage, folly and massive investment. Can ships disappear, totally, into the North Atlantic without trace? Certainly and disturbingly frequently!

Grayshott Folk ClubSept-Dec 2017

Saturday Sept. 30th 2017 @ 7.30pm – Réalta (www.realtamusic.com) (on tour from NorthernIreland) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLbscMCsnls

Here at Grayshott Folk Club, we have an impressive track record of bringing the very best in traditional Irish/Celtic Folk music to our audiences; Altan, The Henry Girls, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, The Outside Track, Crossharbour and Connla have all been our guests in the past. Réalta take up the baton and are another musically gifted band in that mould. They are a cracking 5-piece traditional Celtic/Irish Folk band from Belfast. Described by Irish Music Magazine as: “A full bodied pipe and whistle extravaganza”

Réalta make full use of the intricate melodies and driving rhythms that make Irish music so much loved throughout the world. Performing on dueling uilleann pipes, whistles, bodhrán, guitar, bouzouki, double bass and vocals, this award-winning, Belfast-based band will lead the listener on a journey of music and song through the full range of the Irish tradition…… or as Herald Scotland put it; “Réalta carry on the Bothy Band tradition of taking tunes by the scruff of the neck and firing excitement through them like hot flames!” You’ll hear strains of Planxty too.

The Willows – Saturday 4th November 2017https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF98lIrlvzc

5-piece Folk/Rock band The Willows hail from Cambridge and visited us a few years back. We’ve already seen their Lead Guitarist Ben Savage this year as he played in a duo with Hannah Sanders for us back in April and now The Willows have an added new ingredient in the form of Katriona Gilmour (of Gilmour & Roberts fame), so perhaps she may be the catalyst they need to take them up to the next level?

+ Alden, Patterson and Dashwood. Residing in a quiet and dark corner of Norwich, this trio have been brewing up a mix of really wonderful and tuneful songs. We saw them at Grayshott back in February and I had no hesitation in re-booking them. They must surely be getting much wider recognition in the very near future. Tickets £15 from all the usual places or Des O’Byrne on 01428 607096

Magpie Lane – Saturday 16th December 2017https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE6_Y7xPQco

Magpie Lane are well-known for their harmony singing, playing and presentations of traditional

Christmas and seasonal songs. Their Oxford shows sell out every year. This will be a relaxing and gentle way in to Christmas for those who cherish the memories of Christmas past. Both of these sets of performers have played for us at Grayshott before.

+ Mervyn Mewis & Kathryn Young- Mervyn and Kathryn enchanted us when they supported Faustus for us in April and they will play us some wonderful old tunes and seasonal offerings on the Hammer Dulcimer and Harp that they have actually made themselves.

Tickets £15 from all the usual places or Des O’Byrne on 01428 607096
