PRESIDENT

Here we are in April already!

How time flies. The old saying is that “April

blooming and beautiful.

We have had a busy first few months of the

year, with the Children’s Art Show, Festival

of Arts, and just this past weekend, the

Southern District Convention. For those that

were there, I’m sure you agree that it was

informative and fun. Our club won several

awards based on the reports that were

submitted in January. (see pages 11-12)

We have a lot to be proud of! Our own

Chris Herzog, who is also our past state

president, orchestrated the convention with

the help of Maryann Alianelli and Martha

Pritchard and they did a wonderful job.

April 2019

We always want to remember to support our

sister clubs in their fundraising endeavors as

well as the other Lakeside organizations.

(See page 10)

As mentioned before, I’m very proud to be

the president of this club with all our

amazing members!

Barbara Whitlock recalls the first quilt show

was held at the VFW with

a committee of four

Yrene Woods, Dottie House, Dolores

Meyers, and Rose Collins. I helped at quilt

shows after I joined the club and became

chairman in 1996.

First woman's club quilt show was

1986 celebrating Lakeside Centennial and

held at the VFW. When I first helped it was

at the church. Two chairs were stacked on a

table, covered by a trash bag. A quilt was

draped over it.

A couple years’ later poles, with fabric loops

at the top, were made. . The poles were

stored up high in the B room! The quilts

were taken in Thursday and hung then. The

show was Fri and Sat 10-4. When doors

closed, quilts were taken down and returned

to quilters at 5. Carpet was vacuumed; pews

put back in place and quilt poles stored.

In 2011 the show moved to the VFW. We

had outgrown the space at the

church. Besides quilts, we now have

secondhand rose, sewing closet, sewing

circle sales, vendors and lunch. With 118

quilts entered in 2019 we are filling this

space too.

We have a fabulous quilt show crew. And

this year’s quilt show was the best ever.

Barbara is retiring after 24 years and Tina

Anderson has agreed to fill her shoes.

Barbara was chairperson 1996 thru 2019.

She said, “The first 5 years were the hardest,

and then I got smarter and asked more

members to get involved!”

WOMAN’S CLUB OF LAKESIDE MINUTES

MARCH 28, 2019

Vivian Nelson

Recording Secretary

President, Barbara Meyer, called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m. and asked for

everyone to please silence their cell phones and then led the Pledge of Allegiance. Sandie Campbell gave

today’s Inspiration, “Why We Should Compliment Often”. Barbara introduced today’s guest, Mikki Balicki,

and went on to thank today’s hostesses Barbara Whitlock, Nancy DeGreif, Barbara Channell and Debbie Miller.

Barbara Whitlock said that March is our birthday month and told us a bit about the club’s history and said she

would share the rest after lunch.

Lunch today was provided by Boll Weevil.

Birthday recognitions for the month of March went to Karen Sanford, Sharon Smith, Barbara Meyer, Patsy

Ford, and Kimberely Marchand. Three new members were installed by Cheryl Fuller; they are Diana

Kulhanek, Teddy Pina, and Nancy Smith.

Barbara Whitlock was able to finish her presentation of the history of Lakeside and of the Woman’s Club of

Lakeside. Barbara pointed out that there were many articles on display for us to look through and items that

were used years ago when the club held a tea. Just reading a few of the minutes from years past gave us a bit of

history of what the club was doing in 1910 when it was established.

Secretary’s Report: There was one correction that needed to be made to the spelling of a name followed by

sharing the letters and thank you notes that were received with members.

Treasurer’s Report: Martha Kraling reported that we have $7,774.31 on hand as of March 27, 2019.

Page 13: FANMAIL - Woman's Club of Lakeside | Lakeside Woman's Club · WOMAN’S CLUB OF LAKESIDE Meets on the 4th Thursday of the month at the Olde Community Church, 9906 Maine, Ave. P.O

President’s Message: Barbara said the District Convention will be on April 13; State Convention is May 16

thru 18. Barbara said the State Convention will pay for her and Lisa’s transportation and expenses and that the

money raised ($960) during the year from our raffle basket money will be divided between Carolyn Fulford and

Cheryl Fuller to attend the convention. Barbara said that April 27 is the Lakeside Western Days Parade and

several members will be riding in an antique firetruck in the parade. Prior to the parade the Lakeside Historical

Society will be holding a pancake breakfast at the old church for $5 per person.

Unfinished Business: Barbara asked the members to be sure to turn in their medical information that was

handed out at our last meeting. Barbara said that the information form was to be filled out and put in the

envelope that was provided and to seal it then staple or clip the card with your name on it and emergency

names/phone numbers to the envelope. These will travel with the club when we have an away event to attend

and will be kept here when we are home.

New Business: Barbara explained that even though we don’t have any Board positions to fill right now, we still

need to have a Nominating Committee just in case a Board member isn’t able to complete their term. Doreen

Baker, Cheryl Fuller, and Dennise Kane agreed to serve as the Nominating Committee.

Barbara said the new Red Book is now available and to be sure to pick up one before leaving today. Barbara

went on to say that she has created a new Report Form which will be used to keep track of the hours spent on a

project. Having the new form will also make it easier to include that information in the annual reports.

Chair Reports:

Gloria Rinehart reported that the Children’s Art Show had some winnings pieces, but the students with the

winning pieces of art chose not to send them on to be further judged and she hoped to have that resolved for

next year’s show.

Carolyn Bass said the La Mesa’s Women’s club we be holding a Bridge/Bunco party on April 29 the cost to

attend is $30. The Rady’s Children’s Hospital bunco party is to be held at the Lakeside Community Center

which costs $40 and includes lunch and on April 30 the San Diego Woman’s Club is also having a lunch/bunco

party for the cost of $20.
