7th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Do to others as you would

have them do to you ”

Luke 6:27-38

The readings today talk about forgiving and letting

go. When Nelson Mandella became president of South

Africa, his government ended the decades old practice

of apartheid. During those years of white rule, many

atrocities and acts of injustice occurred against the

majority native African populace. Rather than use their

new power to reek revenge on those whites who had

caused such hardships, Mandella’s government set up

a ‘Truth Commission.’ The purpose of this commission

would be to investigate past wrongs by hearing the

complaints of the victims and having the perpetrators

face their accusers. All those brought before the

commission received amnesty for their crimes but they

had to admit to their wrongs.

Many experts believe that this commission went a

long way in helping South Africa transition from a

minority white to a majority black rule and help put to

rest the evils of apartheid. By not inflicting the type of

injustice on the whites that the natives experienced,

they stopped the cycle of violence. Victims felt

vindicated hearing their attackers admit wrong and the

whites in authority felt humbled by admitting what they

did was wrong.

The same idea went into Dr. Martin Luther King’s

program of non-violence. By refusing to resort to

violence in reaction to violence inflicted on them, blacks

got their civil rights without creating a new cycle of

violence.

Scriptures point out the value of forgiveness and

letting go. In the first reading David could have slain

King Saul and became king. But that would only justify

someone else killing him for the same reason. Even

though Saul wanted to kill David, David’s refusal to get

even stopped things from getting even more out of

hand.

In the gospel Jesus gives a series of admonitions

on the importance of forgiveness and letting go. When

we forgive a past hurt we do not do it out of concern

for the other person alone. We do it because it is good

for us.

Fr. Walter Austin

Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church

I sometimes spend more money than I should. I make

decisions based upon my wants and not my needs. Those

actions can create a financial difficulty or circumstance where

more sacrifice is needed. Instant gratification or selfish

impulses can create havoc in one's bank account, marriage, or

family. All these issues to deal with simply because I wanted

what I wanted and I got it. Yes, it sounds like the actions of a

child.

However, I know I am not alone. We all can easily find ourselves

acting in this manner. This is why it struck me to listen once

again to the words of Jesus when he says, "Do to others as you

would have them do to you." The words are reminiscent of

another of Jesus' phrases, "Love your neighbor as yourself."

The problem is that too often I would like for others to fulfill my

wants instead of needs, and I can seemingly love myself by

doing what I already mentioned above.

A stewardship way of life means that I wisely steward what I

have, and I cannot give what I do not have. Have you ever given

someone a present you couldn't afford and think that was love?

It wasn't. We don't show love by giving what we do not possess.

We show love by meeting another's needs and by sharing our

very self with them. At our core, what we long for from others

more than anything else is love. Would I have others give me

lavish gifts and shower me with empty compliments or would I

have them give to me something much more valuable: the love

in their hearts? In turn, I need to love myself more by realizing

that no purchase will offer

fulfillment more than the love of

God shown to me in Christ Jesus.
