FINE MOTORCARS merCedes-benz sl 550 | January 2012

With much anticipation, Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce the new SL 550 – a two-door coupe/roadster that combines the classic heritage of the SL legend with a new vision; the result is a stylishly sporty and elegant luxury sports car with balanced proportions one would expect from the German moniker. Compared with its predecessor, which has shown little change over the past decade, the 2013 is designed to be more agile and athletic.

o n the heels of Stephen Cannon’s

appointment as the new president and

CEO for Mercedes-Benz USA – a role that

will oversee responsibility for the Mercedes-Benz,

Maybach, Sprinter and smart brands stateside, and

account for more than 1,700 employees and 356

dealers nationwide, Mercedes-Benz announces a

new addition to their line-up: the new SL. Stepped

in a 60-year tradition, SL affords considerably

more comfort and athletic character, setting new

standards in the luxury roadster class; this includes

amazing everyday usability, making the model the

most versatile of all sports cars.

“There are around 900 million cars in the world

and thousands of models. But there is only a handful

of automotive icons. Our SL,” notes Dr. Dieter

Zetsche, chairman of the Board of Management of

Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, “is

one of them: It has class, it has style, it is the ultimate

in comfort and luxury. And it combines all that with

an incredibly sporty and dynamic character. You

would struggle to find a car that embodies Gottlieb

Daimler’s aspiration more perfectly than our new

SL - the best or nothing.”

For the first time, the SL is being produced almost

entirely from aluminum and consequently weighs

considerably less than its predecessor; weighing

around 242 pounds less than it would by utilizing

with previous steel technology. Its highly rigid all-

aluminum bodyshell provides the basis for agile,

sporty handling that has been taken to an entirely

new level, coupled with outstanding bodyroll and

ride characteristics. Even better driving dynamics

come courtesy of the new direct injection engine,

which is more powerful and economical than the

outgoing generation.

And according to Dr. Thomas Rudlaff, responsible

for the aluminum bodyshell at Mercedes-Benz,

“The result is perceptible and measurable. Less

weight means improved performance and efficiency.

In other words, the driving pleasure increases and

the environmental impact decreases.”

The sixth generation of the SL also offers a

retractable hard top that can be operated using

a space-saving electrohydraulic mechanism,

converting the SL from coupe to roadster and back

again in a matter of seconds; going up or down in

less than 20. In contrast to its predecessor, the new

SL offers two versions of the retractable hard top

- glass or the unique panoramic roof with MAGIC

SKY CONTROL. The transparent roof switches

between light and dark at the push of a button. In

the light setting it is virtually transparent, offering

an open-air experience even in cold weather; in its

dark state the roof provides welcome shade and

prevents the interior from heating up in bright

sunlight. The frame of both versions is made from

magnesium, reducing weight by around 13 pounds

compared with the outgoing model, lowering the

vehicle’s center of gravity and delivering greater

agility.

The new model remains true to its tradition as a

technological trendsetter with two innovations:

wiper blade judiciously dispenses wash fluid just in

front of the wiper blade via channels integrated into

the blade - in both directions of travel. The result is

water also stays on the windshield, with no risk of

Frontbass system: Equally unique is the

FrontBass system, which makes intelligent use of

the spaces in the aluminum structures forward of

the footwell. These spaces function as resonating

chambers for the woofers and mark the first time

ever that a sound system has been integrated into

the body-in-white. As a result, the new SL features

clear, rich bass sounds that deliver a concert hall

ambience even with the top down. The new layout

has the added bonus of freeing up space in the

doors and interior.

new StandaRdS in aeRodYnaMicS

The design of the new SL is not only aesthetically

beautiful, it also boasts outstanding aerodynamic

characteristics, giving the roadster top marks in its

segment in three crucial areas:

• Lowest wind noise, virtually on par with a closed sedan

• Best comfort during open-air driving, meaning the roof can stay down even at high speed

• Virtually no accumulation of dirt on the side windows

To coincide with the launch of the 2013 SL,

Mercedes-Benz will be offering a special-edition

model, the “Edition 1,” for a limited period.

The “Edition 1” is superbly equipped and comes

standard with AMG 19-inch alloy wheels, designo

i t cannot be denied that golf is, and always has

been, a gentlemen’s game. Yet insofar as we are

willing to accept the good with the bad, it must

be conceded that this gentlemen’s game also comes

at a gentlemen’s price.

Many prestigious members of the golf community

have recently joined together around the rallying

cry that golf has become prohibitively expensive —

an issue which has special significance for younger

practitioners of the sport. A good set of working

golf clubs is expensive enough, without worrying

about general equipment, course and driving range

memberships, coaching fees, and a myriad of other

considerations that might lead a parent to opt for

the soccer ball or pair of running cleats.

It will come as no surprise, then, that

organizations are sprouting up all over the nation

to tackle this issue head on. One of San Diego

County’s chief advocates for affordable access to

golf is the North County Junior Golf Association

(NCJGA). Led by PGA member and California

Top-50 Golf Instructor David Emerick, NCJGA has

been working within the community for 13 years.

The not-for-profit was born out of Emerick’s vision

that “any child who wants to learn to play the game

of golf should have the opportunity.”

At the core of its outreach, NCJGA affords

children ages 6-18 the opportunity to compete in

youth events. Competition, Emerick says, “develops

qualities such as sportsmanship, initiative, and

SPOTLIGHT non-profit | January 2012

Unifying community resources within North San Diego County, the North County Junior Golf Association is on a mission to simply make junior golf accessible, affordable and fun for kids of all ages and skill levels.

Kids leadership.” These days, though, junior event entry

fees can range in cost anywhere from $200-$400,

not including travel or hotel accommodations. “This

is why the NCJGA is a non-profit corporation,” he

states. “We raise money through donations and offer

kids scholarships to play in our events as well as

other tournaments.” A NCJGA event runs parents

around $45-$50 — at least four times less than the

traditional price.

Youth golf tournaments are, for the most part,

organized on an age-range basis; meaning, youth

are paired against others their age, regardless of skill

level, experience, or competitive motivation. The

result is that tournaments usually end up favoring a

few “elite” golfers who have been playing since an

extremely early age. Often, new or prospective junior

golfers can become intimidated by the unequal skill

distribution within age-brackets, and opt for other

competitive sports that are more accessible.

Correcting these imbalances in the current

junior golfing landscape is a major platform for

NCJGA. In fact, Emerick came up with the idea

for the organization when his own son was barred

from entry to a tournament on account of being too

young. NCJGA has established tournaments that

pair youth competitors together based on skill-level

and experience. The organization has found an

innovative way to do this by creating what Emerick

calls “flights within the division so kids can compete

with others of the same abilities.”

NCJGA has also been reaching out to other

San Diego community organizations to expand the

scope of its programming. From their canned-food-

drive Thanksgiving Shootout and holiday support

of Toys For Tots, to their current collaborative

project with the North County Boys and Girls Clubs

— which links up golf club donors with aspiring

young players, NCJGA is doing its best to invest its

time and energies back into important community

initiatives.

As NCJGA and similar organizations continue

to expand within the local community, it seems

likely that golf will begin to become more accessible

again to more children. After all, as Emerick makes

a point to note, “It’s not all about the kids unless it’s

about ALL the kids.” F

t outing a full schedule of sporting events

local to Southern California, the winter

season once again debuts the fashion [and

performance] of athletes and fans alike. From

the tennis court to the fairway greens, an iconic

embroidered crocodile has since 1933 transcended

style and passion for the game; not to mention an

international audience and a cult-like following.

The brand continues its new global trend of the

“Unconventional Chic” mantra, extending fashion-

forward sportswear that allots consumers an

experience of comfort and leisure with a touch of

upscale elegance.

Rene Lacoste – originator of the brand and

legendary tennis player who won three French Open

titles and acquired two Wimbledon victories in the

1920s – was responsible for bringing the traditional

white polo tee and embroidered crocodile to life.

Alongside his wife, Simone, and daughter, Catherine,

both award-winning professional golfers, Lacoste

and his legendary family of athletes revolutionized

fashion sportswear – even expanding their brand

to include everything from high-end clothing and

footwear, to fragrances, watches and eyewear, along

with a home line of bedding and towels. Brand

Ambassadors in tennis and golf are a natural fit,

including the support of top ranked world golfers

Yani Tseng and Cristie Kerr, as well as Virginie

Baptista brings new direction to the crocodile’s

2012 Spring Collection. Most recently, the label was

guided by Christophe Lemaire for nearly a decade;

securing a more streetwise vibe with bolder colors

and new silhouettes. Baptista’s vision incorporates

volume, color and fabrics that are intended to make

movement “stylishly nonchalant.”

“The 2012 Spring Collection is not about reviving

the past or updating references, but expressing what

Lacoste is today, through a functional silhouette

meant from him and her yet never unisex, and a

complete and versatile wardrobe,” notes the fashion

icon. “With an obsession for reconstructing essential

pieces from scratch, the designer turns them into

something totally new yet reminiscent of one’s

personal history, strangely familiar. Nothing is what

it looks [like at] first; the Lacoste signature pique

dress gets softer when knitted in silk, sophisticated

yet still casual when fastened in the back. Rugby

shirts turn into hybrid dresses, their authentic striped

fabric patched with solid colors in an architectural

pattern. A tee-shirt dress has something of a 20’s

bathing suit. Outerwear pieces are outfits in their

own right when Vareuses jackets are cut in the

thinnest lambskin.”

The collection would not be complete, of course,

without Lacoste’s signature white petit-pique jersey

polo tees and pastel favorites [including their

classic looks of fitted khakis and white capri pants].

Fashion consumers both male and female will also

see much of the striped-hooded sweatshirts and the

V-neck striped collared sweater vests as staple pieces

trending for the spring. However, for the stylishly

sporty and more avant-garde clientele, there are

edgier pieces of active wear utilizing faux leather

trim.

Volume: Stretched proportions turn key Lacoste

styles into new pieces. The polo dress comes full

length or with exaggerated dropped armholes.

Clothes meant to make each movement stylishly

nonchalant.

Colors: Navy blue as the Lacoste timeless black,

soft hues of grey, beige and caramel, with blocks

or vibrant colors: flamenco red, Sumatra blue, deep

jewel green, acid yellow.

Fabrics: From almost liquid fabrics to cotton and

soft canvas. An art deco inspired print made of

interwoven “L,” that comes in a silk georgette and

wool voile. Leather details and trimmings, maxi

cotton pique and oversized cotton linen knits.

It is interesting to see Lacoste’s vision of

the crocodile evolve and progress, becoming a

recognizable brand worldwide; reaching a wholesale

turnover of 1.4 billion Euros, with 90 percent of

sales in France alone and two Lacoste items sold

every second internationally.

Looking back, who would have thought that the

invention of the embroidered crocodile started as a

nickname for Rene Lacoste – who held a reputation

for being a tenacious player, never giving up on his

prey; thus establishing the core values of the French

label, while maintaining a competitive edge within

the sporting industry. His vision was simple, having

created the light and breathable cotton providing

athletes the freedom of movement to play with a

sense of ease. “The Lacoste polo shirt is more than

a worldwide bestseller: the embroidered crocodile

on the heart, gives it an undeniable touch of

distinction. It is a symbol of relaxed elegance which

perfectly embodies the ‘easy chic’ philosophy of the

brand.” F

Coffee or tea? A simple question of choice

for the New Year.

Over the past decade, several studies

have attributed both black and green tea with

the ability to improve overall health – staving off

conditions such as stroke, heart disease and even

cancer; though it may not offer a cure, tea does

comfort our aches and keeps the winter chill away.

But tea is so much more!

Coupled with fine china, delectable desserts,

pastries and finger sandwiches, afternoon tea – also

referenced as high tea at times – not only offers a

unique approach to celebrating life’s memorable

moments, but also affords a daily escape to enjoy

another’s company in solace. In the early 19th

century, ‘tea time’ filled the gap between meals when

dinner was typically served at 8 p.m.; as lifestyles

changed, afternoon tea has become more of a treat

– no matter the time of day.

Whether it is organic or botanically-based,

blended or flavored, infused or served loose, tea

has the uncommon ability to culturally transcend

the human experience – a simple beverage that is

enjoyed daily throughout the globe in a number of

varied traditions and techniques. Even locally, tea is

pursued with passion for its flavor and quality. For

your consideration, here are a few ‘afternoon tea’

selections of choice.

LUXURY teA time | January 2012

celebration of life’s simple pleasures. Make sure to step up your daily routine this year and enjoy the art, the health and the many splendid flavors of tea.

Timeless and unpretentious, Tea Upon

Chatsworth is passionate about afternoon tea.

Noting its flavor, warmth and history, the English-

styled tea room continues the simple tradition;

much more than just a healthy beverage, it is an art.

Proprietor Joy Walsh has shared her enthusiasm

and artistry of tea with clientele since Tea Upon

Chatsworth’s opening in 2004; a vision that began

as a catering service and worldwide quest touring

top tea rooms in England and China – even lessons

from tea master and author, Bruce Richardson. With

a menu designed with a wide range of palette in

mind, the boutique tea room in Point Loma touts a

rather extensive selection; from Ceylon [Sri Lanka]

or India’s full-bodies black to the lighter more subtle

green or white from Japan or China, and oolong in

between. Everyday tea classics remain on the menu

year round, while others are rotated seasonally.

“Seeing the joy and happiness it brought to every

person that experienced this beautiful and timeless

tradition is what inspired me,” noted Walsh. “People

can’t help but fall in love with tea. Our menus

center around the seasons, which make everyday

tea special. Special events such as Valentine’s Day,

Mother’s Day, and Princess [themed teas], [along

with] some featuring notable speakers and authors

are listed on our website, too.”

Beyond “High Tea,” Walsh goes the extra mile

by offering events and classes that teach patrons of

all ages the “Art of Tea;” including patience, the

importance of communication and relationships,

how to act in social settings, and reviews a brief

history of the tradition. Laden with lace and florals,

Tea Upon Chatsworth undoubtedly radiates an

irresistible charm for tea time. F

a doubt a premier destination for the

sport of golf. With a number of courses designed

by Gary Roger Baird, Tom Fazio, Gary Player and

the coast and ocean expanse. The signature hole on

Torrey Pines South is the Par 3, #3 Hole; for Torrey

Torrey Pines was the site of perhaps the most

memorable modern day U.S. Open Championship,

when in 2008, under the typically brutal conditions

of this major tournament, an injured Tiger Woods

defeated Rocco Mediate during a sudden death

playoff after 90 grueling holes of exciting golf. The

club also offers one of the largest on-course golf

shops in the U.S., expert instruction and advanced

golf schools. FWeb: torreypinesgolfcourse.com

While the desert valley of Palm Springs, La Quinta and Rancho Mirage have long been a playground for the entertainment industry – think Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra, snowbirds from Canada and vacationers from around the world, a progressive dining scene with notable chefs has begun to emerge within the past decade; golf may still be the main attraction, but ‘dining in Coachella’ helps make the drive from San Diego worthwhile.

Travelers to the Palm Springs desert region

typically go for the golf – a popular pastime

in the valley with nearly 270 courses and

almost as many golf clubs. In taking note of the

region’s “blessed” fairway greens, both the PGA and

LPGA host annual tournaments in the winter; the

most recognizable being, The Humana Challenge

(previously known as the Bob hope Classic) and the

Kraft Nabisco Championship (an LPGA “major”).

Given the number of visitors, the Coachella

Valley has also become a destination for fine dining.

The top tier of dining away from clubs includes

Cuistot and La Spiga Ristorante Italiano, both of

which are deserving of reservations. One of the top

toques at a private venue is Chef Hugh Duffy at

The Reserve. Not only is The Reserve a spectacular

club with beautiful residences, but it also has

outstanding dining; the club is known for their

Annual Governor’s Cup tournament and the Parker

95 dinner in February.

More readily accessible to the public, as well as

members, are La Quinta Resort & Club [Morgan’s

in the Desert with Chef Jimmy Schmidt at the

helm] and Indian Wells Resort with a menu led by

Chef Chris Olson. Schmidt, who has also directed

Corvette Racing’s sports nutrition for the past 12

years, is known for a philosophy of nutrition and

flavor – crafting what he can on-site, including fresh

garden selections, oils and a spectrum of salts (i.e.

porcini salt, syrah salt, cabernet salt). With a staff

When it comes to throwing dinner and cocktail parties, David Rogow’s philosophy is reassuring:

“Give me a challenge and I will make it happen.”

Since launching his six-year old company “Dinners by David,” the restaurant veteran has catered epicurean events throughout San Diego County for as little as two people up to as many as 2000.

Catering everything from high-profile clientele, to everyday folk planning backyard BBQ’s and special events. Wine and Cocktails often fit into the equation.

of 35, Olson indicated they make all of their stocks,

sauces, and dressings in-house – a technique that

helps to control flavor and the quality of ingredients

employed. He also noted that their Pastry Chef,

Juan Morales, is up for the 2012 season of Top

Chefs Desserts.

From finding inspiration to crafting signature

dishes, Chefs Duffy, Schmidt and Olson offer FINE

readers a bit of insight to their craft. Here are their

thoughts:

Q: What inspires you the most?

Hugh Duffy [The Reserve Club]: The ability to

be creative on a daily basis. We run more like a free

standing restaurant than a club. [He also indicated

that as a part of the farm-to-table concept he enjoys

working with local growers in the Coachella Valley

and Thermal areas.] We can call for produce and

product and it is delivered the same day.

Chris Olson [Indian Wells Resort]: A happy

guest! Making sure that we are doing the best that

we can with what we have, using fresh ingredients.

Having the guest happy and satisfied so that they

will be back is very important as is nurturing our

staff and seeing our crew grow and develop.

Jimmy Schmidt [Morgan’s in the Desert]:

The fresh ingredients; because of the area in which

we live we get pretty much whatever we want in

ingredients. It is all about the ingredients. I like big

flavors, and also, big nutrition as well. The dishes

are big and bold.

Q: What gets you the most excited?

Duffy: Satisfaction of diners; conversations with

our members and hearing their expressions about

their dining experiences.

Olson: A full dining room and we have to cutoff

our reservations because we have a full house. Also,

getting positive responses from guests when I go out

into the dining room; [it’s all about] having people

leave with a smile.

Schmidt: Every ingredient that goes into a dish

adds a unique flavor, they add layers of flavor. Every

component present in the dishes can be tasted.

I like to have huge flavor profiles rich with flavor

and not rich with butter and fat; the dishes are then

incredibly pronounced in flavor.

Q: What do you like to work with the most?

Duffy: The protein I like the best is beef. It is

versatile and expands the culinary experience. I also

like to use infused olive oils.

Olson: Pork is pretty versatile. As a result, we have

pork prime rib, green chili pork tostado, pork osso

(continued from page 48)

50 fine MaGazine San DieGo

Page 51: FINE magazine January 2012

bucco, pork rack, and pork chops on the menu.

Schmidt: I like to work with celery root, reforming

into raviolis, gratins and pasta, and even risotto

with raw celery root cut into the shape of rice –

blanched for 60 seconds and blended into a puree

of celery root; it has earthiness with truffles and

great nutritional value. We also have a great beef

program with the guys out of Nebraska with a

1970s-style of prime beef.

Q: What spice is indispensable / that you cannot do without?

Duffy: Fresh basil.

Olson: Cumin and coriander. We buy the whole

seeds and they are roasted and then cracked, then

used.

Schmidt: Fresh spiced ginger. I like its nutritional

qualities, emulsion qualities and flavoring. It adds

layers of flavor and it is indigenous to the U.S. as

well; not just an Asian thing.

Q: What chef had the most influence on your training and development?

Duffy: Wolfgang Puck. He was an inspiration with

California cuisine.

Olson: I had a lot of experience with down-to-

earth, realistic people including the chefs at Four

Seasons Chicago (Mark Baker) and James Boyce at

Loews in Coronado; [and also] Edward Becker of

The Americana, a great gorge resort in New Jersey.

Schmidt: Madeleine Kamman, she absolutely was

my mentor. She took me from the dark world of

electrical engineering to the bright world of food

and wine.

Q: Do you have a signature dish on your menu?

Duffy: A caramelized day boat scallop with braised

leeks and Champagne caviar sauce. Another is a

squab braised, with natural reduction with a little

huckleberry in it, and Parisian vegetables in a cup

on the side.

Olson: Braised short ribs and another is lobster

macaroni and cheese.

Schmidt: Porcini beef tenderloin that is prepared in

a vacuum treatment and flavoring, and mushrooms

make it very special. We use Prime Certified Angus

beef and it is the only program in this area of the

world, using beef raised to 1970 prime standard. I

cut my teeth at 21 in Detroit when ‘men were men’

and ‘prime was prime’ and three martini lunches

were normal. F

W hen you think of luxury travel, what

comes to mind? Take a moment and

really think about it; where is the most

exotic destination you have ever been, or would

even like to visit at some point? Are you, perhaps,

still searching? After a recent holiday for two, we

discovered the Four Seasons Resort in Bora Bora –

without a doubt, it is a true tropical paradise and

quite worthy of its 2011 title as the #1 Resort in

French Polynesia [and #23 in the world] by Conde

Nast Traveler.

From Los Angeles, the flight to Tahiti is a mere

eight hours with a quick island hop to Bora Bora;

however, you can only make the transfer in daylight,

as the airport runway is not equipped with proper

lighting for night flights. As a side note, the Bora

Bora airport is built on its own island or “motu,” as

it is called in Tahitian. Once landed at this tiny little

airport with one gate, you are taken to your hotel

of choice via water taxi. In our case, an intimate

staff of three assisted our transfer via a “small” 40-

foot yacht, whisking us to the Four Seasons along

the eastern atoll of the island. In addition to luxury

resort accommodations [including 100 overwater

bungalows and seven beachfront villas, all designed

with traditional thatched roofs and decorated with

indigenous artwork], there are also year-round

private residences available for purchase; lots start

at $2 million Euro, with ocean or lagoon views,

along with private beaches and the enjoyment of

all-inclusive resort amenities.

The island itself is volcanic, encircled by sand-

fringe islets and an outer coral reef. As a result,

the water is typically warm, calm and unbelievably

clear! The lagoon is relatively shallow, and lends

well to aquatic-centered activities, including a

snorkel safari, scuba and kayaking. And for the more

romantic gesture, a sunset sail aboard a private

catamaran is an enticing escape.

From the moment you step onto the waterside

yacht at the airport to your arrival at the dock for

check-in, the service and hospitality is undeniably

priceless; you are greeted with some of the kindest,

warm-hearted people you will ever meet – which we

were told is the “Tahitian Way.”

Our holiday for two in Bora Bora is simply the

best we have ever taken. Why, you may ask?

Oh my, where to begin? Was it the helpful

and friendly staff, or could it have been all the

complimentary water activities? Stand up paddle

surfing was our favorite, as it gives you a broader

panorama of the sea life below – countless colors

of fish and oversized rays home to the lagoon and

coral gardens. Or, on second thought, was it the

much welcomed warmth of sun kissed afternoons,

the light breeze of the trade winds, dining alfresco,

the unspoiled vast tracks of deserted white sand

beaches, “coconut island,” the massive poolside

cabanas or even the local flavors of Polynesia-South

Pacific cuisine? So many choices!

Spanning a mere 16.9 square

mi les, Bora Bora in French

Polynesia is best known for

i ts white sandy beaches, lush

tropical s lopes and dott ing

bungalows atop an ever-

al lur ing turquoise lagoon.

Speaking from personal

exper ience, this quintessent ia l

tropical paradise is truly

unl ike anything you have ever

exper ienced.

fInesd.com 55

Page 56: FINE magazine January 2012

For us, it was actually the accommodations

themselves at the Four Seasons; the overwater

bungalows, impeccably decorated, are simply

magnificent! Upon check-in, you are greeted with

cold towels and a drink; and somehow, the staff

knows your name. A concierge then drives you via

golf cart to your bungalow, over the winding and

massive wooden roadway-bridge structures. Our

room number was 423 and unveiled an incredible

unobstructed view across the lagoon to the slopes

along the center island. The multi-room, single

story bungalows are the largest in French Polynesia

and are often referenced as being “stadium sized”

in several travel publications; with well appointed

furnishings, the living space offers an open flow

throughout, unfolding to an outside dining loggia

and deck.

The bedroom suite and spa extends to a private

outdoor deck for sun bathing and lounging; and

without any hesitation, take a dip into the warm

waters of the lagoon below. Complimentary

snorkel gear is available on the patio, along with

complimentary robes, slippers and beach bags.

The bungalows also feature floor viewing panels

throughout the residence for a glimpse at the

underwater world of Bora Bora. By far, the private

patio with direct and easy access to the lagoon was

an unexpected treat that tops the list for this locale.

It is good to know that whenever you go, there

is really no off season in Bora Bora. The water

comes from desalination and is safe to drink; and

even though French and Tahitian are the official

languages of the famed Society Islands, English

is extremely common. Wedding and anniversary

celebrations are certainly a natural fit, but in any

case, it deserves top spot on your bucket list. You

can certainly take our word for it! F

With the trust and confidence of his clientele and peers, Dr. Scott Miller – a La Jolla-based Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with 15 years of expertise – extends an artistic sense and an aesthetic eye to his craft; qualities that separate good results from great ones. And according to Miller Cosmetic Surgery Center’s philosophy, “The only evidence of the surgeon’s presence should be the restoration of beauty and vitality, [along with] improved contours and confidence.”

I n today’s ultra competitive world of cosmetic

surgery, too many surgeons have turned away from

providing quality medical care that puts patients

first; they have replaced time honored treatment

traditions with an overemphasis on lavish offices

and flashy marketing. However, Miller Cosmetic

Surgery Center represents a paradigm shift, placing

the focus back on patients and the outcomes they

expect. In reality, this game-changing client-service

approach is an example of “what is old is new.”

And the result? Miller Cosmetic Surgery Center is a

thriving practice fueled by word-of-mouth referrals

and a long list of happy patients that even span

multiple generations.

“If today’s cosmetic surgery practices are like

libraries, then too many patients are confused by the

covers they see, and they wind up with books they

don’t like,” says Board Certified Plastic Surgeon,

Dr. Scott Miller. He explains that with the deluge of

conflicting information about surgical procedures,

separating truth from fiction can be a challenge.

Add to that a surgeon’s lack of identifying his or her

patient’s particular needs, and the end results are

clients who are disappointed with their procedures.

Caring Counts:an innovative approaCh

Dr. Miller distills his client service model into

four components; Miller Cosmetic Surgery Center’s

P4P (Passion 4 Performance) approach addresses

the shortcomings of many of today’s cosmetic

surgery practices. P4P comprises quality, integrity,

safety and service. This four-part system has two

objectives: pleasing results and satisfied patients.

“Consistently meeting these two goals is what allows

my staff and me to sleep well at night,” notes Dr.

Miller.

• Quality can be summed up by the Italian proverb, “Trifles make perfection, but perfection is no trifle.” To achieve the highest form of a surgeon’s art requires attention to the subtlest of details.

• Integrity demands that surgeons act in-line with their stated values. For example, does the doctor follow through on his or her mission statement? “At the end of the day,” states Dr. Miller, “you are what you do, not what you say.”

• Safety simply stated, means putting the patient’s health and well-being above all else.

SPOTLIGHT DR. mILLeR | January 2012

60 fine magazine san diego

Page 61: FINE magazine January 2012

Preoperative and postoperative care must be as attentive and precise as the surgery itself.

• service is about caring for both the patient’s physical and emotional well-being. It requires listening to his or her needs and being present and in-the-moment during all patient interactions.

So how many plastic surgeons meet the P4P

standard? According to Dr. Miller, in any major city,

you will find just a handful. “While many doctors

attend to their work dutifully, in my experience only

a few are truly passionate about what they do. It

may take additional research and time to track one

down, but once you do, you’ll have a surgeon for

life,” he says.

In truly caring about his craft and ability to

help his patients, Dr. Miller also participates in the

Interface International Volunteer Surgery Program.

This multispecialty group travels to Mexico to help

children with disfiguring birth defects or trauma;

patients receive medical care that they could

otherwise not afford. On a recent visit, Dr. Miller was

particularly struck by the case of two brothers. One

was 17-years-old. He was a poorly educated recluse

who, throughout his life, had viewed the deformity

on his forehead as a curse. His younger brother was

only four. The older brother brought him in, against

the initial wishes of his ashamed parents. The

child had the same mark. Thanks to the love and

insistence of his older brother and the commitment

of compassionate, dedicated professionals, the

Dr. Miller and his staff pursue the highest

aesthetic ideals. A visit to the state-of-the-art facility

on the campus of the renowned Scripps Hospital

La Jolla reveals a cosmetic plastic surgery team

committed to meeting their patients’ needs.

“Patients don’t care how much you know until

they know how much you care,” says Dr. Miller.

From the moment patients arrive, the warmth and

sincerity of Dr. Miller and his team are evident as

they attentively listen, comprehensively inform, and

provide customized recommendations.

Miller Cosmetic Surgery Center is pleasant

and elegantly appointed, yet equipped to provide

the most scientifically advanced aesthetic plastic

surgery. The fully certified surgical suite is a safe,

comfortable, private setting that fosters artistically

precise treatment. Seeing Dr. Miller’s honest, un-

retouched before-and-after photos makes it clear

that plastic surgery is a blending of art and science.

Far from finding his work a burden, Dr. Scott

Miller cherishes it as a privilege. “I wake up every

day feeling I deserve nothing and knowing I need

to earn my patient’s trust and respect through

performance. I have a passion for performance,” he

says. FMiller Cosmetic surgery Center

stylish homes in the Rancho Santa Fe community.

Ally has sustained a fantastic reputaion of selling

homes for her clients within Fairbanks ranch. Here

is one of many testimonials to her work: “I hired

Ally Wise and I got Ally Wise. I did not have to

talk to an assistant or buyer’s agent. I hired her for

her negotiation skills and knowledge of the area. I

wanted to deal with the talent I hired. She was not

There are many qualities and skills that go into

being an excellent real estate professional - integrity,

marketing savvy, effective negotiation skills and a

high-quality professional network, all of which are

hallmarks of how Ally Wise works.

In her experience as a Rancho Santa Fe real

her clients first. What does this entail for Ally? She

comments, “This means keeping myself accessible,

being an active listener, and NEGOTIATING for

every last penny. It is funny when you are dealing

with such large selling prices. Often a client will not

concentrate on a $4000-5000 negotiable item like a

repair. I have to remind them the purchasing power

this amount of money has after the transaction

is closed. I never lose sight of my client’s money.

Never.”

This “client first” philosophy has always been

her approach and it requires her to continually

chef/ Owner Jeffrey Strauss has a flair for presentation and an unquestionable

talent for taste that has delighted the palates of the world’s most powerful busi-

ness brokers, socialites, United States Presidents and both American and foreign

dignitaries. he has turned from the world of “chef to the Stars” to creating food

that’s more personal and serving his family and friends.

Throughout his nine years at Glorious Food (1985-1993), Strauss took leaves of ab-

sence to concentrate on higher learning in some of Europe’s finest Michelin-rated

restaurants. Upon his return, armed with big and fresh ideas, Jeffrey applied many

of the newly acquired creative techniques by teaching the staff at Glorious Food

what he had learned. The culture of sharing knowledge and inspiration at Glorious

Food is one of the reason’s that the highly regarded catering company has main-

tained a competitive advantage for such a long period of time.

Strauss’ eclectic inspirations for Pamplemousse Grille are drawn from the New

Jersey farm of his grandparents, where he visited frequently as a child. he brought

these inspirations to the prime Solana Beach location of the restaurant, just mo-

ments from the Pacific Ocean, across the street from the Del Mar Racetrack and

down the road from acclaimed produce farms, nature preserves and polo grounds.

When he opened Pamplemousse Grille in 1996, Strauss made a personal state-

ment with the casual yet elegant atmosphere, and inspired yet straightforward

food that delights all the senses. his menu at Pamplemousse Grille melds his many

creations and inspirations from his tenure as Executive Sous chef and Executive

chef at Glorious Food, and his many travels to Europe.

In 2008 Jeffrey was honored to accept the 2008 ‘Nice Guy of the Year’ award

from the very generous San Diego charitable foundation known as the ‘Nice Guys’.

This organization’s focus is to empower struggling local families. This honor has

been one of his more meaningful achievements due to its profound effect on the

community he calls home.

Since its debut, Pamplemousse Grille has received many local and national

awards including: “Best Restaurant, People’s choice” San Diego home & Gardens,

“Best New Restaurant” “Best caterer” and “San Diego’s Best chef” San Diego

Recently debuting their Winter Fashion Collection, Vivacity Sportswear, a newly founded fashion boutique in San Diego, combines femininity and function; featuring Swarovski crystal detailing, color blocking and stylish pieces, the collection can be worn from course to clubhouse.

Aimed at reinventing a woman’s appearance

on and off the course, Vivacity Sportswear,

recently launching their fashion label this

past fall in La Jolla, takes inspiration from the latest

fashion runway trends; coupled with the comfort

of performance wear, the brand hopes to celebrate

and inspire today’s woman with elegantly modern

golf and resort attire. Founded by San Diego

entrepreneur Vivian Sayward, Vivacity, unlike most

brands, is created for women, by women – who also

enjoy afternoon golf and resort amenities; their

goal is simple: bringing fashion to the sport that also

compliments a busy lifestyle.

“We approached our collection with the desire

for pieces that could be worn from course to

street,” said JoAnn Jack, fashion industry veteran

and creative director at Vivacity who spent many

years overseeing golf resort merchandising. “Unlike

traditional golf outfits that are boxy in silhouette

and color-coordinated as if from a child’s closet,

Vivacity’s color palette is not only directional but

practical, the forms are well fitting and because they

were inspired by runway trends, every piece can

work into a woman’s existing wardrobe.”

Four looks define the debut collection, affording

luxe detailing and soft performance fabrics. The

selection features: Sport Zip, with graphic color

blocking; Spectator Sport with playful patterns of

black and white dots; Crystal Classics featuring

sheer fabric detailing and Swarovski crystal accents;

and the Regal Collection, rooted in rich colors and

featuring a faux snakeskin and fur accessory bag

with hidden tee holders.

Q: Where will Vivacity Sportswear be available?

Vivian Sayward: The entire collection will be

available [on our website] and at select shops

including The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe and The

Crosby. Complete list of retailers available on the

site as well.

Q: Any personal favorites in the collection?

Sayward: We have received [much praise] for the

quality of the fabric and the chic designs. Women

have fallen in love with two pieces in particular: The

long-sleeve black top with Swarovski crystal zipper

and sheer sleeves – it’s an understated elegant, sexy

top that can be worn for post-game cocktails. The

other popular item is our ruche top; let’s face it,

we all have areas we like to hide and the ruching

does just that while accentuating other areas! It’s

performance wear that’s oh so feminine too.

Q: What has been the reaction on the golf course or even on the street?

Sayward: ‘Oohs’ and ‘aahs’ – when they see the

crystal detailing and then when they touch the fabric.

And surprise when they realize it’s a golf line! We’ve

even had men comment on the sophisticated designs,

and some have purchased items for their wives...that

says a lot! We’ve also received a great amount of

admiration for designing and manufacturing locally.

Q: Any hints on what’s in store for the Spring Collection?

Sayward: We design for classic women, so you’ll

see jewel tones in the collection. And we also look

to the runways for inspiration, so don’t be surprised

to find hints of colors that are au courant as well as

chic accessories for golfers on the go.

FINE DESIGN ShERyLL JAckMAn | January 2012

A kind of ‘Island Time’ writ large reveals itself

in many of the designs of Sheryll Jackman’s

creations. Whether it is transforming older

homes on Coronado with an elegant refurbishment,

enlivening the historical perspective with the

vibrancy of contemporary living or starting from

scratch, Jackman clearly has a compelling touch.

Founding the Jackman Group in 1978, she weaves

various multi-disciplinary parts into an historic and

organic whole that includes planning, design and

construction.

And while it is history that seems catalytic in

energizing Sheryll’s accomplishments, it is her

demonstrable talent for a kind of casual elegance

that does not confine itself to any particular design

style. Rather, with Sheryll shepherding the Jackman

Group she instead focuses on delivering impeccable

historical preservations as the home or client selects.

Further facilitating this acumen: the Construction

Team headed by Harry Jackman, the recently

converged retail side of the home furnishings as

evidence in Seaside Homes of La Jolla, and Seaside

Papery - a lively stationary and accessory boutique

in Coronado she shares with daughter.

DESIGNING LIFE

So many home designs cast a sense of light while

being successfully anchored with darker accents to

root the historical perspective with today’s casual

elegance. Through this technique, Jackman’s design

team style spans decades and a century or two as

light stone and rich dark woods often mingle, serving

both comfort and artistic expression of each era.

Additionally, the designs may incorporate

varying cultural styles as well. One might find lovely

Asian, African or European accents in wall hangings

or a well-placed couch, side table or chair alongside

the quintessential American sofa, bed or settee.

Somehow, the global perspective of casual comfort

fused with the richness of America’s coastal history

and current lifestyles effectively display equal parts

energy and relaxation.

SEASIDE HOME

Keeping with Sheryll Jackman’s sense of history,

the Jackman Group opened Seaside Home in 1996

as a way to offer gorgeous retail furnishings along

with the design services they so stunningly create for

clients in the San Diego area. In the fall of 2010,

Jackman opened the ideal historical venue, merging

their Rancho Santa Fe and Girard Avenue locations

into a larger venue; she found a landmark building

to house the expansive 32,000-plus square footage –

the former Saks Fifth Avenue space located at Wall

Street and Herschel Avenue in La Jolla.

“What typifies Seaside Home,” said Jackman, “is

the convergence of an elegantly classic ensemble of

elite names in design and home décor showcased

in delightful and architecturally detailed lifestyle

vignettes.” Furniture lines include the prestigious

Oscar de la Renta, Baker Furniture, Ralph

Lauren Home, McGuire and Stickley; in addition,

Henredon and Barbara Barry are represented.

Tabletop vendors include William Yeoward Crystal

and Juliska, Michael Aram and L’Objet. Bed and

bath lines include Ann Gish’s washable silks, SDH,

Sferra Bedding, Peacock Alley and Anali.

Without a doubt, as Director of Design for Seaside

Home and the Coronado-based Jackman Group,

Sheryll Jackman and husband, Harry Jackman, VP

of Construction Management, are design and retail

forces that amply represent the finest in San Diego’s

past, present and future residential and commercial

culture: a design destination all their own.
