The Crow Tribe

Crows and their ilk often get something of a bad press; blamed for the disappearance of songbirds and thought of as a gang of bullies that scare the more popular (i.e., cuter) birds away from the feed we generously provide. But crows are only doing what their instincts demand of them: ensuring their young survive at all costs.

Not only are most of them strikingly handsome birds, but they have an intelligence that is unmatched in the avian kingdom. Wherever there are oak trees you might be lucky enough to see brightly coloured jays, burying acorns for later consumption. They come back to these caches months later and seem to unerringly dig in the right spot to find their larder.

Magpies patrol the guttering of suburban housing, but they are not checking for leaks. They know that these are the favourite nesting sites of starlings, and where there are nests, there are likely to be

protein rich eggs or helpless chicks.

Jackdaws with their grey heads and golden eyes are attracted to anything that glints in the sun. Trophies found in their nests include ring pulls and bits of old tin foil, and, according to legend, the occasional diamond ring. I have even heard it said that carrion crows have been known to avoid falling prey to peregrine falcons by hiding under sheep when the sinister silhouette shows up on their radar. So next time you see a magpie on your bird table, don’t be tempted to think of them as cruel or greedy: they simply have young mouths to feed.

Historic Poulton

Some time in the 1970’s the skeleton of an enormous elk was excavated from a site in Carleton. The remains of this colossal beast were reckoned to have been in the region of 12,000 years old. The presence of arrowheads, both in and around the carcass, points to human activity in the area, from the same period.

Dig deep enough in the right place, and the past can often surprise you. As a child I can remember uncovering a war-time stirrup pump from a dyke near my house. I had no idea what it could have been, but for quite a while it was a central prop, with which my friends and I acted out the fantasies of our boyhood games. Perhaps all those coins that fell from my pockets in the 60’s and 70’s will turn up as the antiques of the future.

THE CARLETON ELK

An exciting discovery in July 1970 gave Poulton-le-Fylde international fame - an almost complete skeleton of a 12,000 year old elk was found as foundations were being dug for a new house on Blackpool Old Road, Carleton.

What made the find so important was the discovery of hunting barbs embedded in the leg bones - indicating that human hunters had lived in this area around 10,000 BC. This is the earliest evidence yet found for man living this far north, in the days when Britain was part of the continent of Europe and it would have been possible to walk from Poulton to the Ural Mountains in Russia.

s Poulton now on the tourism mapTourism signs are finally directing visitors into Poulton. After years of campaigning by businesses, residents and Wyre Council, four of the familiar brown signs have been installed by Lancashire County Council on the main Garstang Road.

They highlight that there is a town waiting to be explored if people turned in Hardhorn Road, with specific reference to St Chad’s Church and Jean Stansfield Memorial Park.

Councillor Barry Birch, Cabinet member with responsibility for the economy at Wyre Council, said: “We have been fighting for this for such a long time because so many people drive blindly past without knowing Poulton is even there.

“We’re very much looking forward to welcoming some new visitors to our quaint little town and the boost to local business that is sure to follow as a result.”

HAMBLETON W.I.

“LIVE ART” was the title of this weeks meeting, there was a rush for front row seats as some of us imagined that we would be watching the artist David Healey being painted himself, but no we had to see him drawing on an orange canvas with an outline of a tree on it. David who is an Artist, Graphic Designer, Illustrator and young and good-looking, had studied and obtained his degree at the Blackpool & Fylde College, after working in the Civil Service, asked us to shout out some subjects for him to paint on the canvas as he never knows when he starts a painting what he is going to come out with. An owl [in blue] , a moon[ in white], bats [ in black], a cat, a ghost, flowers with teeth, a lion, a star, a bird, a computer with a huge eye, spider and web, broken heart, a puppet, all in bright colours drawn with fibre tip pens, all interlaced with free drawn coloured patterns. Whilst this was going on we were handed a 78 r.p.m. record painted in orange which we had to put objects on to with the same pens in red and black as David was using. Afterwards he put some patterns in different colours so that we produced a masterpiece as well. The artist asked us to name his painting for the competition which was won by Kathy Johnson titled “Beware I’m Watching You”. We raffled the painting off. An active evening with a difference.

It’s Good to Hear!Do any of you remember BT’s “It’s Good to Talk” slogan where they featured a host of famous names such as Maureen Lipman, Bob Hoskins and Stephen Hawking in their TV ads?

It might seem like yesterday but believe or not those campaigns were first aired 20 years ago.

At the time BT didn’t have any significant competitors so it was all about reaching out to people and letting them know that better communications promotes deeper relationships.

In the main it was accepted that women had already grasped this idea as they spent much more time on the phone than their husbands, who paid the phone bill, and acted as ‘gatekeeper.’

The campaign was a tremendous success for BT who calculated that it netted them an extra £5billion in the 5 years that it ran.

At Hear2 we know all too well that better communications promote deeper relationships.

It’s a daily event for us to witness couples who are at their wits end with each other because one of them has a hearing loss that they refuse to acknowledge or if they do acknowledge it, refuse to do anything about it.

How many have threatened their partner with divorce, perhaps tongue in cheek, perhaps seriously? Quite a few in our estimation.
