SECTION A: COMPREHENSION QUESTION 1 Read the following magazine article and answer the questions that follow.

Happy girls are the prettiest From struggling with a low self-image to being the happiest she’s ever been,

Scandal’s Masasa Mbangeni (28) shares her journey of self-love with Phila Tyekana.

“I was named after the Msasa tree, which mostly grows in Zimbabwe. My dad

named me Masasa because his hopes were that I‟d always be resilient, much like the Msasa

tree – its wood burns a long and lasting flame”, says Masasa, explaining the origin of her unique

name. It‟s true that we live out our names. As I soon learn from my conversation with her,

Masasa is the true testimony of resilience.

I appreciate her honesty – the actress opens up about her struggles with self-image, love and

maturity. I‟m fascinated by her realness; she talks with passion, and uses a lot of over-the-top

gestures as she narrates her life story. Her Xhosa expressions, tears and frankness capture the

emotionally destructive life she once led.

Straight to Scandal!

Just one week after graduating at Wits University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dramatic

Arts, Masasa went from being a student to devious Thembeka Shezi in the popular e.tv soapie,

Scandal.

However, getting that role didn‟t mean overnight stardom or getting a leading storyline in the

production. It would take a few years to prove her worth before getting the meaty storyline that

she has now. My first years on Scandal were a beautiful lesson of humility. I went there with the

mentality that because I was a Wits graduate and a Mandela Rhodes Foundation scholar,

success would come easily. I was paid ridiculously low. I stayed at a horrible commune with a

tiny room, my housemates were irritating and life was disheartening. I was offered a scholarship

in Germany to further my studies, but I turned it down to join Scandal. I regretted that decision

countless times. While still in varsity, I met my mentor and director James Ngcobo, and did a

play with him called „The Hill‟ by Zakes Mda. I only acted in two scenes, but the impact it had

English FAL Grade 7 2 Nov /Dec 2015

was so great that people still talk about it today.

So, I didn‟t understand why I was miserable at Scandal; why I was an

extra and paid little money. Why did I study so hard only to earn peanuts?

To top things off, I was subjected to a lot of hate on social media about

my looks. Viewers called me ugly and I believed them. My existence was

just bleak nje – I was miserable at work and home,” says Masasa, reflecting on how her career

began.
