Becoming a Micro-Celebrity in Your Field
Professional vs. Personal: only someone over 30 would worry about such details
Tomorrow's social pros will seamlessly marry the two
But for now, you will still need to proceed with caution

Advice: Go Pro
Keep the personal stuff on the fringe and to a minimum
Don't get photographed doing something that will compromise your pro image
But don't make your pro image too corporate either
Balance: only you know where to draw the line.
The shot of 27-year-old speech writer, Jon Favreau with his hand on the cardboard senator's breast appeared for about two hours on a Facebook page before disappearing, along with numerous other Favreau pictures, including one of him dancing with the cardboard female secretary-designate.

A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words:8 Types of Profile Pictures
1. CreativeThe illustrated profile image ranges from cartoon characters to photoshopped pictures made to look like illustration
The iconic Obama image of Shepard Fairey was a popular creative icon that also showed support for the candidate in the run up to the election
Others chose Warhol effects, or other painting effects to say, “I’m artsy and creative.”

2. Committed Often we find profile pictures with more than one person in them. There is the subject plus usually someone else they are in a relationship with
It could be close friends, a husband or wife, a boyfriend or girlfriends, or even children
These pictures speak volume about the value of human relationships of the user, declaring, “I’m a stable committed person who can be trusted.”

3. CompassionatePet pictures are tricky images to carry off professionally. The image is usually either with the pet, or the pet alone (these are really awful)
Pets are often a big part of peoples lives, which explains displaying it as a profile photo
But if social media is about the future of work, the animals need to be part of the business
No one cares that much about someone else’s pet, but it does say, “I love animals. I’m a caring, compassionate person.”

4. Intrepid Lots of people chose to show off their adventurous side. These pictures are often take while on a boat, a plane, while skydiving, surfing, at a exotic vacation destination, near a famous landmark, etc.
These images speak volumes about a person’s desire to try new things, about their courage and their resilience to change

5. Style / AsspirationalThis one often back fires. These are pictures of people and their car, their motorbike, their yacht, etc.
In fact, often the user isn’t even in the picture. These image are about flaunting the bling (or the bling you wish you had)
While we all have aspiration and possession, displaying them doesn’t make you memorable – in fact, it makes you easily forgettable – but I might remember your fantasy boat

6. Authority These are action shots, taken during moments of authority – usually speaking engagements
These are images that would make Tom Peters proud. They say, “I’m great a making a presentation. Hire me.”

7. Activist These images reflect a deeper concern for a cause, often for the environment
They are like miniature public service announcements remind us about climate change, the plight of the impoverished, or other atrocity that you should be concerned about
These images attempt to say “I’m a concerned global citizen.”

8. Jokes These are wide and varied, including the “me as baby” pictures, the “house of mirrors” effect (making the user super stretched or squashed), the humorous text (“This profile picture has been disabled because of the user’s unbearable good looks”), etc.
These say, “I’m a fun, carefree person.”

The Best: Be Recognizable
These can range from any photo someone has taken of you that you like, to agency-quality head shots taken by a pro-photographer
People like to recognize people. Don’t be afraid to just be yourself

#FryLift (Feb 4, 2009)
1. “Ok. This is now mad. I am stuck in a lift on the 26th floor of Centre Point. Hell's teeth. We could be here for hours. Arse, poo and widdle."
2. “#frylift This is getting boring. Morale still high. Hopes of early night dashed.”
3. “#frylift We're free! Nice men from Thyssen freed us. Paramount Club had champagne for us at the bottom. I'm allergic, but nice thought x”

He who dies with the most followers wins
It's also about attracting the biggest following possible.
Some have tried to argue that quality is more important than quantity.
In social media you can have both.
There are two types of Twitter users: Those who want more followers, and those who are lying. – Guy Kawasaki

Becky Blanton turned Seth Godin’s Triibes against him
• Godin personally wrote her an email saying that she was being “too personal” and that this was “not how social media is done”.
• Fellow Triibe members rushed to her defence, rallying around her, calling her the Mayor, even sometimes “The Queen” of Triibes.
• Eventually, she even won over Godin too
