My ESU professors were dedicated to providing me with a quality education, and I was able to immediately apply what I learned to my career. The availability of online courses gave me the opportunity to balance my classes, work and family. It felt as though the program was designed just for me. The beauty of the ESU graduate program is that it is designed to fit into your life when you are ready to expand your horizons.

raduate Education at Emporia State University means Empowerment. As an Emporia State graduate student, you have the tools to transform your life for the better, to help you follow your passion and to become a recognized scholar and critical thinker.

That’s what it means to be “Empowered by E.”

Through assistantships, scholarships and other financial aid, we can help empower you to pursue graduate studies at ESU.

Andrea Schmidt knows what “Empowered by E” means to her. “I am ten times more confident entering the real world now than I was only a year and a half ago with an undergraduate degree,” she says. “I gained leadership experience and built confidence in my abilities.”

ESU professors are committed to your success, too. Cathy Grover, professor of psychology, explains: “I give each student individual guidance in a one-on-one mentorship, and make available opportunities essential for application to doctoral programs (e.g., research, conference presentations, service opportunities).”

Professor of English Mel Storm agrees: “Whether I’m advising or teaching, I try to open up possibilities and give students room to discover what they’re capable of. Sometimes you push people forward further than they thought they were capable of going, and sometimes you just stay out of the way.”

Personal attention and encouragement to grow. That’s what you will find in Emporia State’s Graduate School. That’s empowerment.

egacy of Excellence, Exemplary Programs, Trail Blazing. ESU’s Teachers College has been named a top four Exemplary Model Teacher Education program by Arthur Levine, former president of Columbia University and has been identified as one of the top ten schools in education in the United States by the George Lucas Foundation.

“The ESU professors were all caring and knowledgeable. My experience was outstanding. This graduate program was cutting edge.” says Ryan Shannon of New York.

ESU’s Teachers College rigorously prepares you to advance your career in education as a teacher, administrator, counselor or school psychologist.

ESU’s Teachers College offers master’s degrees in art therapy; clinical psychology; curriculum and instruction; early childhood education; educational administration; health, physical education and recreation; instructional design and technology; instructional leadership; master teacher; mental health counseling; rehabilitation counseling; school psychology; school counseling; special education; and school leadership and teacher education. You can earn an Ed.S. in school psychology. The Teachers College also offers a number of master’s degrees online.

echnology. Resources. An acclaimed faculty, and a prestigious AACSB-International accreditation, an honor held by less than 5 percent of the business schools worldwide, await you at ESU.

Your success is important to us too. “One of the big reasons I came to Emporia State was the quality of the professors,” explains Carl Ricketts, BSB ’80, MBA ’81, of Capitol Federal Savings’ Chief Strategic Planning Office. “I had heard good things about the accounting program, and that students going through the program ranked high in terms of passing the CPA exam.”

Ricketts is just one of many successful graduates from ESU’s School of Business. More than 97 percent of graduates are placed in jobs within six to nine months after graduation.

You will also have state-of-the-art multimedia capability and high speed Internet access to facilitate your studies. You can expect to experience small class settings in top-of-the-line facilities. Class sizes typically range between 15 to 25 students.

The School of Business offers two master’s degrees. The Master of Science in Business Education program is for business and computer teachers who desire advanced educational preparation to enhance their professional competencies, and for professional business people, such as those who administer corporate training initiatives. This program is available online. The MBA program provides advanced education in business administration to those seeking advancement to middle and upper managerial and executive positions. We offer a unique educational experience that will contribute significantly to your personal and career development.

SCIENCESLIBERAL ARTS

COLLEGE OF

ANDhe humanities. Natural sciences. Social sciences. ESU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

offers graduate courses in the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. A world-class faculty and quality master’s programs will help you pursue your passion.

“The pursuit of a graduate degree in English further honed the research, writing, AND speaking skills I had acquired as an undergraduate at Emporia State,” says Cora Zaletel “With brief stints as a journalist and corporate communicator, I’ve spent two successful decades in higher education public relations thanks in no small part to my graduate school experience.”

Of course, a graduate degree in the liberal arts and sciences is not entirely about a successful career. But the liberal arts and sciences do help you to think and write critically and creatively, and this can be a boon to your career. Study after study has shown that liberal arts and sciences graduates “tend to advance further and be more sought out by CEOs for high-level jobs than non-liberal arts grads,” says Dr. Katharine Hansen, creative director and associate publisher of Quintessential Careers.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) surveys of managers show that they care more about a job candidate’s critical thinking and communication skills than in what they specialize. That’s one value of a liberal arts and sciences education.

Emporia State’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers master’s degrees in biology, English, history, math, music, the physical sciences, teaching English as a second language (TESOL), and the social sciences.

nnovation. Technology. Unsurpassed student assistance. Founded in 1902, SLIM is the oldest school of library and information studies in the western half of the United States and offers courses at six program sites in Colorado, Kansas, Oregon and Utah.

SLIM is the only library school in Kansas accredited by the American Library Association, offering a two-year, 36-credit-hour Master of Library Science that prepares qualified students to become information professionals in all types of libraries and information agencies as well as a Ph.D. program that prepares scholars to teach information science in higher education. The School Library Media Licensure program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

“The Ph.D. program through the School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) at ESU helped me develop an ability to analyze matters from multiple perspectives, to think thoroughly about an issue, and to explore different possible explanations of a research problem at hand” says Waseem Afzal. “This program enhanced the depth and breadth of my thought processes in a very supportive environment and ESU community including faculty and administration.”

SU has one of the most competitive tuition rates in Kansas and the nation. You can obtain a quality education at an affordable cost.

Fellowships and scholarships toward tuition are awarded to qualified full-time and part-time graduate students based on academic excellence and/or demonstrated need.

In addition, financial support is available through state and federal agencies. Such support may depend on the financial need of the student. For federal aid, please file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at fafsa.ed.gov. You must have a federally assigned PIN to electronically sign your FAFSA. To apply for a PIN, please visit pin.ed.gov.

Emporia State participates in the Federal grant, loan and work programs as well as the State of Kansas scholarship and work programs. Eligibility for these programs is based on results from a completed FAFSA. The Office of Financial Aid assists students with the FAFSA questions and the process for receiving grants, loans, and work-study. For more information, visit www.emporia.edu/finaid.

FINANCIAL AID FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPSn assistantship at ESU is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable

experience in your field of study and receive a stipend and tuition waiver while you complete your graduate program!

Three types of graduate assistantships are available at ESU--research, teaching, and administrative. About 185 positions are offered through various academic and non-academic departments. Graduate assistants receive a stipend of about $7,059 and receive tuition waiver during each term in which they hold a full-time appointment (20 hours per week). Teaching and research assistants are also eligible for student health insurance with the university contributing a substantial portion of the premium.

To qualify for an assistantship, you must have a minimum undergraduate overall GPA of 2.5 or 2.75 on the last two years of undergraduate study, acceptance into a graduate degree program of study, and successful criminal background check. While holding an assistantship you will be required to maintain a 3.0 GPA and enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours each semester you hold an assistantship.

Applications are available at http://www.emporia.edu/grad/GTA/index.php . A listing of graduate assistant opportunities can be found at http://www.emporia.edu/grad/docs/asstbk.pdf.
