Cows Create Careers

Hopetoun P-12 College is ‘hosting’ two new attendees – two calves from the Cows Create Careers program.

Mr Price, Miss Digby and the VCAL students have set up calf pens to ena-ble the students to rear two calves.

Interest has been extremely high from all our students who have eagerly visited the calves for a pat.

Here, two VCAL students, Tanisha Curren and Griffin Town give one of the calves a friendly pat.

More information about the Cows Create Careers program will be provid-ed over the coming weeks.

Principal’s Report “Should secondary students be allowed to have mobile phones at school?” was the provocative question addressed by Year 6 student Tris-tan Glare yesterday. I was lucky enough to be invited to listen to persua-sive speeches made by some of the Year 3-6 students yesterday and this was one of the discussion points. I must admit that Tristan put up a strong case as did Claire who made arguments against animals being kept in cages. Other persuasive cases argued included a presentation by Skye Hakopa who declared her favourite book is “Fault in our Stars” and Cody Frankel argued that motor bikes are a great hobby.

NAPLAN

By the time you read this newsletter NAPLAN testing will be behind us. I will reiterate that even though these tests are ‘one-off’ assessments, the results are used by the school to check individual and school performance and are used to enhance or modify programs. I am extremely pleased with the responsible approach taken by the students towards the tests and I am sure they all gave their best. I am also confident that they appreciated the breakfasts provided by Faye Cook and staff each morning.

Mother’s Day stall is with us again – period 2 tomorrow the primary students will be able to purchase a gift for mum. Don’t forget, dads, carers, guardians, to send along a few dollars with your child for them to purchase a gift.

Welcome Additions to our ‘Farm’

Yes, the VCAL students have added to our school farm yard with two new calves.

Speaking of VCAL, I would also like to commend their work in the vegie garden and sustainable food production. Check out their work on their SLAM (Sustainable Living and Agriculture in the Mallee) blog at:

Due to cropping and a range of many other activities on the go, we have postponed the School Coun-

cil meeting until Wednesday 31st May. Business scheduled for last Wednesday will be transferred to

the meeting in two weeks’ time.
