Principal’s Report

Exams & Step Up

This critical time of the year continues to evolve at school where we have exams followed by step up into the new year level. Our Year 11 students have completed their final exams and are now ‘stepping up’ into their new Year 12 subjects for 2020. We have Units 1 and 2 English, Further Maths, Studio Art, Physical Education, Business Management, Biology, Media, Health and Human Development and Accounting running for our 2020 Year 12 students. The current Year 11 students complete their 2019 schooling tomorrow and commence their holidays after the final bell.

Meanwhile, the Year 9 and 10 students commenced their end-of-year exams today with papers being set on Humanities and English with Maths, Science and Health exams taking place tomor-row. Next week (week 9) all of the current Year 7 to 10 students will step into their new classes for 2020. That means, the current Year 7s will follow the Year 8 timetable, Year 8 into 9 and so on. It is an important week where an overview of the curriculum for 2020 is provided, expectations are set and work commenced on next year’s program. Year 10 students conclude their school year on Friday 6th December.

End-of-Year

With step up for the Year 7-10s in week 9, we follow this with a week of activities (week 10) then the final week of the school year (week 11) brings our celebrations and Awards Night. The school year is closing in rapidly.

Week 10 (Activities Week) brings with it swimming for the P-6 students along with literacy/numeracy and Christmas-based activities. We also have state-wide orientation day on Tuesday 10th December. For Activities Week, the Year 7 to 9 students will be involved in subject-based ac-tivities as well as a trip to Horsham, some time for fishing, perhaps time at the lake and some stu-dent-led activities. The intent is to exemplify student voice to a greater extent this year by encour-aging some of our young leaders to take the initiative to develop some student-led activities to en-gage more of the Year 7-9 group.

Awards Night Rehearsal

This special event for Hopetoun P-12 College is rapidly approaching. It is scheduled for Tuesday 17th December, commencing at 7pm. All students are required at school on Tuesday morning for brief Year Level assemblies then walk to the hall for rehearsals. Year 10-12 students will be dis-missed from the hall after rehearsals conclude. Students in Years 7-9 can be dismissed from the Hall provided they have a note from their parents/carers. If they do not have a note then they must return to school. Years Prep to 6 are expected to return to school for the remainder of the day.

Planning for 2020

Preparation for 2020 continues to be a priority as we work to finish all of the requirements for 2019. We have just about completed our cash budget for next year and our Annual Implementa-tion Plan, which is a summary of our improvement strategies for next year, are well developed. We have some staffing vacancies to fill and we have texts and booklists well in hand. Our year will commence with an in-depth analysis of our achievements over the past four years followed by the development of our Strategic Plan for 2021-2024. Term one will be very busy developing our re-view followed by our formal review in term two, 2020.

My Dream Job

My dream job would be a veterinarian. As a vet I would have to be able to help out by doing treat-ments treat the injuries and illnesses of pets and oth-er animals with a variety of medical equipment, in-cluding surgical tools and x-ray and ultrasound ma-chines.

Some of the qualifications I would need to do this would be a Bachelor’s degree in science-related are-as like zoology, molecular biology, chemistry, animal science and biochemistry. All round you would need a Doctor of Medicine degree, and also a medicine degree, for experience you need clinical practicum.

All up its when it comes to schooling its roughly about 6 or 7 years of schooling.

Some of the key skills be being a vet are obviously are a passion for working with animals, analytic problem-solving and communication skills, attention to detail and you need to be calm under pressure.

When it comes to getting paid, they have an average annual salary being around $99,000 a year. Some OHS issues are things like having animal-induced injuries. Another OHS thing is making sure every-thing is clean, so making sure all the tools are sani-tised and making sure all the animal shelters are sanitary and clean.

My Dream Job

My dream job is to be a grain and livestock farmer be-cause there are lots of different things that you have to do - there isn’t just one thing that has to be done. Being a farmer means that you are relying on the weather to make your money. There isn’t a qualification that you need to be a farmer, but it is helpful to have your Cert 4 in Ag because then you can have some prior knowledge and understanding on the crops and spays. It is helpful to have your AGVET chemical user’s certificate - this means that you can buy and use chemicals. It is also helpful if you have your forklift licence and your truck licence be-cause farmers use them lots. As a farmer, the jobs that have to be done can vary because of the time of year and the weather - during spring you are buying and selling sheep, during summer you are harvesting your crop and during winter you are sowing. So, there are always plenty of things that need to be done even when you’re not sowing, harvesting or selling sheep. You also have to go fencing, feed sheep, shear sheep and fix anything that is broken. Because farming is such a dangerous job you have to be careful and wear the correct protective equip-ment when working with chemicals. You also have to make sure that there are guards on everything that moves on the back of a tractor or auger.
