PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Principal’s Report

We were certainly honoured to have a past SRC President and school dux visit us earlier this week. Neville Moyle ‘dropped in’ to speak to the students about his journey since graduating from Hopetoun P-12 College and deliver a clear message to the students. Nev explained the learning, training and skill development he has experienced in the fourteen years since he graduated from Hopetoun. His time in the air force has given him a university degree, travel all over Australia and to many countries, active service in Afghanistan and, shortly a three-year placement in America. His message was quite simply that if you have clear goals at school any stu-dent from the country can pursue their dreams and succeed. Our students were enthralled with his presentation. They responded positively to his warm presentation and more than a few are showing interest in joining the Australian services. It was also pleasing to note the large number of past students and community members who came along to catch-up again with Nev as well as to listen to his presentation.

Swimming Sports Congratulations to Yarrara on winning the house swimming sports last week. It was certainly a wonderful day – a little chilly early but settled into pleasant weather as the day progressed. It was good to see the P-12 concept where the older students assisted with the younger students. Competition and fun were the winners on the day. Thanks go to Mr Robins and his team for running the day and the VCAL students for the barbecue. I must also note the exceptional performance of the staff swim team – wow, what a stunning victory!!

A group of five primary students represented our area at the swimming sports in Horsham last week. They all did well and Jaiden Cook has qualified to go to the next level of competition which is to be held in Ballarat shortly. Congratulations to the competitors and all the best to Jaiden at the next swimming meet.

Parent Teacher Interviews Parent Teacher Interviews are an important part of communication between school and home. They provide an opportunity for you to hear about your child’s progress as well as ask questions and seek clarification on any matters about school. I urge everyone to make the time to attend these important meetings.

The term one Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday 15th March from 1.30pm-6.30pm. In-cluded in this newsletter is an information sheet in regard to the Interviews and also a reply slip to indicate your attendance or otherwise. This slip also gives you the opportunity to elect which teachers you would like to see. We would ask that these reply slips be returned to the College by next Wednesday (8th March) and we will coordinate all of the Primary interview times. Following this a booking sheet will be either sent home, or if there are secondary siblings, given to the oldest child in the family to make appointments with secondary staff. All secondary students will have the opportunity to make appointments at lunchtime in Room 10 on Friday 10th March and Tuesday 14th March.

School Council School Council holds its second meeting for 2017 next Wednesday night. This is a dual-purpose meeting. The first, which commences at 6pm, will be a normal council meeting to complete the business of the 2016/17 council. The main business for this meeting will involve approval of the school budget and the 2017 Annual Improvement Plan. At the conclusion of the normal council meeting the Annual General Meeting will be held.

Annual General Meeting The 2017 School Council Annual General Meeting will start at about 7pm, immediately following the normal meeting. The AGM will involve co-option of new members, election of office bearers and tabling of the annual financial report. Past and new members of School Council are invited to attend both meetings and the Annual General Meeting is open to all parents/carers and the school community. The meetings are held in the new library. Mr Graeme Holmes

SPORTS UPDATE – From Mr Robins House Swimming A ripping day of sunny weather greeted Banksia and Yarrara last Thursday as the House swim-ming sports were run and won for 2017. Student encouragement was a highlight of the day, as was the leadership demonstrated by all captains from both houses. In the end, it was a runaway win for Yarrara to retain the shield for the 5th year in succession. Oliver Hallam (Banksia) and Sophie Smith (Yarrara) were deemed best dressed for their houses. Thanks to a successful ‘cheer-off’, Oliver took home the overall best dressed perpetual trophy as well as earning points for his house. Thanks to all students for their efforts, staff for ensuring the day ran smoothly and the VCAL students for catering for lunch with another successful BBQ.

Year 7 Camp – Halls Gap

While we were on camp at Halls Gap, we participated in all kinds of different activities. My favourite activity was the Rock

Climbing and Abseiling.

On Monday, we stopped in Ararat for lunch and had a tour of J Ward. We learnt about some of the people who went to J Ward and why they were there. After the tour, we went to Halls Gap. That night we had the zoo encounter. The man running it

brought in lots of different animals, some of them being: a dingo, a wombat, a snake and a sugar glider.

On Tuesday, we had the camp activities, where we got to complete things like ‘The Leap of Faith’ and ‘The Kookaburra.’ We

got to go to Mini Golf where we picked groups and completed all of the courses. It was a lot of fun!

On our last day, we went Rock Climbing and Abseiling. We were there for around four hours and everyone enjoyed it. Some

people even got to go Abseiling twice!

Overall, I had an amazing time and thought that it was a great camp. You get to learn a whole new variety of skills that will be helpful in the

future.

Michayla Frankel

While we were at camp we participated in lots of activities completed in the three days that we were on camp. These were lots

of fun! We stayed at Tandara Lutheran camp. My favourite activity was the Kookaburra.

On Monday we stopped in Ararat to meet with the Rainbow students. We had a tour around J-ward which is the old jail. It was very interesting, what they did with the patients and what they had. Then we had lunch at Maccas and travelled to Halls Gap. We stopped at Venus Baths where the waterfall ran into the pools. Mr Baulch went across and fell, it was very funny but it

would have hurt.

On Tuesday we did the Kookaburra, which was my favourite activity. We had the belay team that pulled us up, we had to run and it pulled us up into the air it was a lot of fun. I was very nervous about having a go but I had a red hot go at it and really

enjoyed it.

On Wednesday we went rock climbing and abseiling, I only did climbing and I was on the belay which I had to pull people up so

they would not fall I was very sore after it.

Over all I enjoyed if very much and would like to thank Mr Baulch and Mrs Robertson.

In week four we travelled down to Halls Gap for our camp. We participated in all kinds of adventurous activities. It was an

amazing camp that I loved!

We stopped down at Ararat to have a tour of J-Ward. This is a prison for the mentally insane, we visited the rooms they stayed

in and we were told stories about the patients. The prison had an eerie feeling that left you feeling cold.

After that we journeyed on to Halls Gap. We stayed at Tandara Lutheran Camp with Rainbow. The grounds were covered in kangaroo poo and the grass was lush and green. That night we had a zoo encounter where a mobile zoo came to us! We saw many different Aussie animals from mammals to reptiles. All the animals had an odd odour. We saw a wombat and I didn’t like

it!

We got up bright and early and the air was damp. We got to experience all the camp activities from the Kookaburra to the Leap of Faith, it was very high! At camp they encouraged us to do many team building activities. That day we got to play the spectac-

ular mini golf course they had to offer.

Lastly, we had rock climbing and abseiling, which was by far my favourite! The view was spectacular and it was loads of fun.

Overall, it was an awesome camp that was run amazingly! It was highly enjoyable and I would definitely go back!
