One Mans Opinion

Part I

After my last OMO (One Mans Opinion, like that? OMO prettyslick right?) A few people asked for more examples of programsdesigned to lead you to the poor house, so lets talk about title pawns.

First, the title pawn folks are the happiest and friendliest and mosthelpful money sellers I have ever met. Im sure theyre happy because they know as soon as they handyou that check, they OWN you, your car and probably your first born. Id heard about the paymentschedules at the title pawn companies for some time but didnt really pay that much attention since Ididnt plan to use one. Now, for those of you who havent used a title pawn, pay close attention. Imgetting ready to amaze you, I know I was amazed when I learned how they really work.

A few years back due to previous commitments, family illness and other tragedies, I needed to get myhands on an additional $5,000 immediately, raiding savings was not an option, going the traditional

bank loan route was not fast enough and borrowing from family or friends never crossed my mind. Sohaving all of my vehicles paid for I said, Ill just go down to our friendly neighborhood title pawnand borrow the money for 2 or 3 months and pay it right back. Simple? Right? So I go in the officeand they are So Friendly and Ready to help. I have a check for $5,000 in my hand in a couple of min-utes. They said for that amount, Id get the lowest interest rate of 10%. Now I knew that was high, butIm thinking its only for a few months, so it wont be that bad, but before I left the office and afterasking about early payoffs and reading the contract again while I sat there, I then realized that that10% interest rate, which they call a fee is due Every Month! They collect the fee, before any payment

goes on the principal. Got it? No? Let me explain. If in one month you go in and pay $510, your bal-ance for the next month is $4,990, NOT the $4,490 you thought it might be, ONLY the $10 over the$500 fee goes on the principal. Lets got further, the next month, you pay another $510, your balanceis now, $4,979. Got it? The first $499 is your fee so only $11 goes on the principal. So in two monthsyouve paid $999 in fees and $21 in principal. OK, one more month, you pay a whopping $600, thefirst $497 goes to your fees and $121 goes on the principal and you still owe $4,858. Im sure youvegot it now. One would think that this is illegal, but apparently it isnt. You wind up paying thousandsand thousands of dollars more that you borrowed. Even a little $500 loan can cause one to spend thou-sands and still lose their vehicle. Just beware, find some other route, its scary I know, just dont letthem get you if you can help it. (BTW, I was able to pay them back relatively quickly, but they still

got me for too much, Im coming to you for a loan next time, you got me Right?)
