PARISH ADVISORY BOARD - FEBRUARY UPDATES

The Parish Advisory Board last met on February 23rd. Some of the discussion topics were: the updated Adviso-ry Board Charter and Policy handbook (an effort led by Jorge Soto), implementation and status of the 1st Friday Adoration in the Old Mission, the first steps of imple-menting a new Diocesan Mental Health Ministry at MSLRP, the Multi-Cultural Stations of the Cross on 3/27, and a soon-to-come Advisory Board Parish Survey as a part of a larger parish ‘Listening Campaign’ to enable the Advisory Board and Parish Staff to ensure we’re taking the thoughts and feelings of the parish to heart. The Parish Advisory Board Members are: Andy Do-mingo, Sr., Buster Beazley, Elizabeth Salinas, Jorge Soto, Jose Maceda, Sr., Juan Jimenez, Lani Paulo, Laura Chun, Marta Werner, Pat Sheehan, Tony Martinez (on Leave of Absence), Kathleen Flanagan, Fr. David Gaa, and with the admin support of Linda Causee. Many thanks go to Tere-sa Monasi who has helped to shape the upcoming Parish Listening Campaign and has concluded her term on the Board. You are welcome to attend our Advisory Board meetings!!! They are the 4th Monday of each Month in the Parish Building. Please call or email us and let us know you’d like to attend so we can ensure enough seating: for Spanish - Elizabeth Salinas (Spanish) 760-726-3712 / [email protected], or for English - Laura Chun (English) 760-726-2486/[email protected].

LISTEN AND FOLLOW

“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” And listen they did. From that moment on, Peter, James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their Master’s footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, “O Lord, I am your servant,” the three disciples committed themselves to lives of incredible hardship and indescriba-ble joy. After that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation. Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham’s and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Trans-figuration, we all face the daily challenges of walking “before the Lord in the land of the living.” As we follow our varied calls to love and serve, let’s be comforted by Paul’s reminder to the Romans: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

THE ART OF LISTENING If you want God to listen to you when you pray, shouldn’t you listen to God when God speaks to you?

DIOCESE MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY

The Diocese of San Diego is inviting Catholics to imag-ine a world where mental illness has lost its stigma – and to help bring that world into being, one parish at a time. The San Diego Diocesan Mental Health Ministry Network has been created to accomplish that goal. The Parish Advisory Board is looking for volunteers who would like to be a part of this process for Mission San Luis Rey Parish and to coordinate this effort with the Dio-cese. The Diocese is offering abundant training and support for all those who are interested, for both the Liaison & Leadership role now and for future volunteers. Interested in learning more? Please contact Laura Chun of the Parish Advisory Board at 760-726-2486.

THANK YOU!!

Kudos are in order for all that who worked on deco-rating the Serra Center, Chapel and Old Mission for our Lenten season. It is most obvious that much thought and labor went into making things just perfect for everyone. I cannot tell you how moved I was when I went to the 5:30 Mass last evening (Ash Wednesday). The rotunda took my breath away and everything looked so beauti-ful. I even noticed the new rugs! Today I popped my head into the Parish Chapel before going over to the noon mass at the Old Mission. Just like the Center last evening, I found both places beautifully, but simply, decorated - very moving! The Environmental Ministry always does such a phe-nomenal job and frequently their actions go unherald-ed. This time they "hit the nail on the head" and their endeavors will be instrumental in assisting many on suc-cessful Lenten journeys. My thanks to all who contribut-ed their time and talent. Special kudos to Mercedes Casey who was responsible for all those thought provoking succulent arrangements that added so much to the environment! ~~Anonymous

The Spirit of Saint Francis, an inspiration for Pope

Francis. Francis, a Pope who will preside in charity. What has Pope Francis brought us that is new? There is no need for you to have read the book, just come with an open heart and mind. Br. Mark is currently the Animator for "Franciscans for Justice" in the O.F.M. Provinces of St. Barbara and Our Lady of Guadalupe. He is also the Guardian at St. Francis Friary, Sacramento. LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fasting (the eating of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in between snacks) applies to those be-tween ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fasting. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abstinence (the exclusion of meat for the entire day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abstinence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a time for us to voluntarily choose to do pen-ance and mortification as an expression of gratitude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an attempt to respond to the love that He so willingly gave to us.

The Promise of God’s Unconditional Love and Infinite Generosity

The church has always encouraged authentic and balanced forms of devotion that will help the faith-ful deepen their appreciation of the Eucharist. The First Friday devotion is dedicated to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is associated with St. Mary Margaret Alacoque who was given the gift of an intense gracefilled prayer life. In her mystical insights (visions), she was given messages to fight the heresy of Jansenism that drove people away from God with an emphasis in predestination. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus empha-sizes the mercy and love of God. It encourages be-lievers to frequently receive communion. Through receiving the sacrament, people will come to expe-rience and know the unconditional love of God. On First Fridays, parishioners gather in the Chap-el after the Daily Mass from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and in the Old Mission from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Eucharis-tic Adoration. People pray for themselves and the church to experience the mystery of receiving com-munion and participating in the sacramental en-counter with Jesus. Please join the members of our parish in this very important part of the church’s devotional life on Friday, March 6, 2015.

First Friday Devotion
