made many adjustments for the safety of staff, volunteers, and all who are served through the agency’s programs. Our
shelters have remained open and we have expanded some of our Emergency Shelter criteria on a case by case basis to safely
offer housing for more women and children during the pandemic. We eliminated three months of rent payments for our
Affordable Supportive Housing and Family Stability Programs and will continue to assist all residents with any food,
household supplies, and PPE as needed. Case management and mental health services have also increased surrounding
COVID-19. Our adoption program continued providing pregnancy support and child placements, implemented telehealth for
critical adoption services, and hosted support groups via Zoom for birthmothers and prospective adoptive parents. Marie’s
Community Distribution Program temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution, but recently hosted a curbside service
day offering summer clothing, diapers and baby wipes for families in need. The agency is planning to reopen Marie’s
beginning July 7th on a regular basis every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-2pm at 305 E 7th Street in New Albany. The
support of your parish has helped make our work possible. Thank you for enabling St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities to
alleviate some of the burdens placed on our community’s most vulnerable during these difficult circumstances. If you would
like to support our work, visit www.stecharities.org/donate or mail contributions to St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities, 702 E
Market Street, New Albany, IN 47150. Legion of Mary Meeting - Every Tuesday at 4:15-5:45 on Zoom. Please email Deacon John if you would like a zoom link to
the meeting.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK- Jesus knows that the challenges a disciple of the Gospel will
face in the world are real. He tells all of us point blank, “Do not be afraid.” There are many things we can fear as we attempt
to live the Gospel: unpopularity, being rebuked, rejection, anger, being challenged, having to defend ourselves, standing
alone, insecurity, failure, and even death. Many folks know that their faith calls them to live life more deliberately and radically
but are cowards when it comes to putting it into practice. We easily justify sticking with the “acceptable” norms with which we
are accustomed. These only serve to keep us stuck and mired in mediocrity. The Gospel — given flesh by the very presence
of Christ — seeks to stretch, challenge, and change us. We do not have to fear anything, even death. Sometimes, living with
our fears brings us a sadly disordered sense of comfort. Maybe what we really fear above all else is change.
GOSPEL MEDITATION Encourage Deeper Understanding of
Scripture - There are many things of which we can be afraid: being
rebuked, rejection, anger, being challenged, having to defend ourselves,
standing alone, insecurity, failure, and even death. For some, identifying
and overcoming their fears is a daunting task. Regardless of how much
they may want to break the cycle of fear, they find that they remain close
friends with old and dysfunctional behavioral habits and norms. Maybe
what they really fear is change. There are many who gravitate to the
familiar and comfortable, and find safety and security in doing so, even if
they remain mired in mediocrity. Human beings have to learn that there is
life beyond the “what has always been” and that happiness and depth are
possible when old structures and systems have to be left behind.
Can you leave the near and dear, the comfortable and familiar, the safe and secure, and discover new opportunities? The
shear thought of doing so can bring on feelings of apprehension, intense anger, resentment, defensiveness, reluctance,
resistance, and even apathy. If we have to be responsible for making the change, cowardice can creep in. If someone else is
to blame for making the change, any number of possible negative reactions are possible. In the end, only one thing is
required and that is God. If I can rely on and deepen my relationship with God, especially in the Eucharist along with a
community of believers, then little else is of great concern. We have to figure out what is really important. It is not always
what we think.
The Gospel calls us to stretch ourselves and try new things, not to remain stuck and stagnant in familiar ways. We are asked
to live life more deliberately, radically, and intentionally. We are asked to leave the familiar behind and learn to live with
changing, and often limiting, human structures. We cannot get too caught up in the physical, ideological, or structural
systems we are used to. The Holy Spirit always leads and guides us. If we trust this, we will find ourselves doing things we
never thought we could do. Always seek the path to joy and love. They keep us from falling victim to our fears and from
seeking the nostalgic crutches we think we need to achieve a sense of well-being and happiness.
WHY DO CATHOLICS HAVE A POPE? To answer the question of why Catholics have a pope, we have to pull the lens back
and think about the very nature of the Church herself. According to the Nicene Creed (which is the statement of beliefs that
we recite each Sunday at Mass), we profess that the Church is “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.” These adjectives are
called the marks of the Church, and they help us see that the Church is bigger than just our individual parish communities or
even the Christians living in a particular region or country.
To help ensure that the community of disciples would remain united in a communion of love, Jesus
entrusted the Apostles with special authority to teach, heal, and forgive sins in his name. And from
among this group, Jesus chose Simon Peter to play a special role, designating him as the “rock” on
which the Church was to be built (see Matthew 16:18-19; John 21:15-17). Peter “the Rock” became
the visible sign of union within and among the Apostles. In time, as Peter and the other Apostles
passed away, other men were chosen to take their place. The successors of St. Peter — who we
honor as the first Bishop of Rome — and the successors of the other Apostles (the bishops) continued
the work entrusted by Jesus to that first generation of Church leaders.
According to long-standing tradition, the successor of Peter was Linus, who was followed by Cletus,
who was followed by Clement I, etc. This line of succession continues to Pope Francis in our own time.
Over the centuries, these Bishops of Rome — who came to be known as the “pope” (from papa, which
means “father” in Latin) — still continue to act as the “rock” of the Church and as the visible sign of unity for all the Catholic
Christians. The pope, more than any other bishop, stands as the Church’s primary teacher and as pastor of the Church
throughout the world, helping to ensure that the Church remains what Jesus intended her to be: one, holy, catholic, and
apostolic. To learn more, see the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” (no. 857-862 and 880-882).

Holy Communion this weekend.
Virtual Vacation Bible School – Rocky Railway:
Jesus’ Power Pulls Us Through was great fun!
Thanks to all of our families who joined us online and
participated. A
special thank you
to our talented
staff who made
VBS possible.
You did a great
job going above
and beyond to
make our VBS
engaging for our
children. Thanks for sharing Jesus all this week!
Music – Tim Murner, Abigail Nordhoff, and Isabelle
Nordhoff
Bible Adventures – Keisha Kaelin and Sydney Kaelin
Imagination Station – Allison Millner
Pre-School Depot – Allison Ebling
VBS Day One – Today
was all about how Jesus’
power helps us to hard
things. We heard the story
of how Aninias did what
God called him to do even
though it was a very hard
and frightening thing to do (Acts 9:1-19). We made Off
Rail Rollers in Imagination Station and watched them
roll all over our tables. Our memory verse for today is,
“I can do all things through Him who strengthen s me.”
– Philippians 4:13
VBS Day Two – Today was all about how Jesus’
power gives us hope. We heard the story of how Paul
encouraged his shipmates in a storm and even when
their ship was
shipwrecked (Acts
27). It was great fun
joining Miss Keisha
in the virtual boat as
we navigated the
storm together. We
saw how Jesus raises
us up when we created our Hope ‘n’ Hovers that
reminded us that Jesus’ power gives us hope. We loved
listening to Miss Allison tell us our Bible Story in our
Pre-School Depot. Our memory verse for today is, “be
strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait
for the Lord.” – Psalm 31:24
VBS Day Three –
Today we learned all
about how Jesus’
power makes us bold.
In Bible Adventures
we learned about how
Peter and John were
bold when they cured
the man at the Temple gate. They couldn’t stop telling
others about Jesus so they were arrested. They boldly
told the leaders that they had to obey Jesus. In
Imagination Station we made Bold Blasters and
watched them fly high! We also learned about St. Jose
Sanchez del Rio who boldly proclaimed Christ the
King! We had great fun at Pre-School Depot and we
learned about Peter and John. Our memory verse for
today is, “He gives power to the faint, and strengthens
the powerless.” – Isaiah 40:29
VBS Day Four – Today was all
about how Jesus’ power lets us
live forever. In Bible Adventures
we heard about how Jesus died on
the cross for our sins and then
rose from the dead on Easter
Sunday. Our hearts are broken at
Jesus’ sacrifice when he died for
us but our hearts are made whole
again when he rose from the
grave. In Imagination Station we played with our
perpetual papers that reminded us that Jesus’ love for us
never ends. It was great to learn about Jesu’s love for
us at the Pre-School Depot with Miss Allison. Our
memory verse for today is, “The Spirit of him who
raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you.” – Romans
8:11
VBS Day Five – Today was
about how Jesus’ power helps
us be good friends. In Bible
Adventures we learned about
the first Christians took care of
each other, were good friends,
and were a community of faith.
In Imagination Station we made
power bands with three types of
beads that remind us that Jesus’
power helps us to be good
friends. At the Pre-School
Depot we had fun listening to the Bible Story as told by
Miss Allison. Our memory verse for today is, “Love
one another as I have loved you.” – John 15:12
