What’s On at HPS?

Henty Public School

Welcome to another full week of activities at Henty Public School. This week we had students attend the Southern Riverina Cross Country, a Billabong High performance, and a Debating workshop in Wagga. Staff Development Day Last week teachers had an opportunity to undergo professional learning on our Staff Development Day. This learning was strategically aligned with our whole school goals and focused upon developing a future focused school, strengthening our understanding of how people learn best, and learning about the new learning progressions in the area of Writing.

During the year, all staff will have four half days in after school hours when they will undertake learning in the areas of CPR, Anaphylaxis, Digital Technology, trauma-informed practice and the Literacy and Numeracy Progressions.

National Assessment Plan for Literacy and Numeracy - NAPLAN Next week students from Years 3 and 5 will be sitting NAPLAN assessments which will be online this year for the first time. These tests provide an opportunity for students to show what they know and can do independently in the areas of literacy and numeracy. They represent a small part of learning at school and we wish to remind students that, although this is an important time for them, there are so many aspects of their learning that are not measured in these tests.

I wish to thank Ms Emma Byles who has put in so much time and effort to ensure that we are very organised for these events.

Anzac Day I would like to thank the students for their attitude and manners at the small ceremony that was held to commemorate ANZAC DAY on Thursday last week. The Year Six students did a fabulous job leading our school.

Have a great week, Tina Roworth - Principal

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the cross country yesterday at Burrumbuttock. You all did your very best, well done. Ashton Scholz and Angus White will now proceed to the Riverina Cross Country on June 14th at Gundagai; having finished 3rd and 2nd respectively in their age groups. Top effort boys. Riley Manning is reserve in the 8/9 girls, so make sure to keep training! A big thank you to parents who assisted by being on a checkpoint etc. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Athletics Carnival

Remember our Athletics Carnival is on Friday 25th May at Billabong High School. The completed permission notes should all be returned by now. Parents and families who have volunteered to help on the original date, please let us know if you cannot help on that date due to the change? Students who have not returned their permission notes will receive a reminder today. There are many students who have returned their permission notes but not their $3.00. Please pay this at the office ASAP.

The PSSA at state level has decided to cancel the 1500m for students, as a result this event will not take place at our carnival.

Tennis

Tennis lessons will commence this Friday. Feel free to bring a racquet if you wish but the school will have plenty. Our coach will be Zac Burhop and the program will be Hot Shots. Thank you to the Henty Park Tennis Club for allowing us to use their great facilities.

Well done to Hannah Male who has been asked to play in the state tennis competition with another region, Sydney South West, later this week, in Albury. Hannah was reserve for the Riverina girls. It’s great to hear she has the opportunity to play at his level, Riverina’s loss Hannah!

Netball Knockout

The Netball Knockout that was to be held this Friday has been postponed due to predicted inclement weather. The new date will be Friday 18th May at 12pm. We will be leaving school at 11.15am.

SPORT CONTINUED

Despite the gloomy weather all the students who represeted HPS last Friday at the Paul Kelly Cup

had a great time.

P & C NEWS

Welcome back to Term 2! We trust everyone enjoyed their break. Attached is an article from the Fundraising Whisperer, which is helpful for anyone who hasn’t yet become involved in a school P&C but who might have been wondering ‘What a P&C really does’!

The next meeting of the P&C is to be held Wednesday 16 May 2018 at 5.30pm in the school library. As always, we welcome old and new members and look forward to having you there.

Kind regards, Cindy Scott, Secretary HPS P&C What a P&C really does Parents who cringe at the very mention of the term ‘P&C’ probably have never been to a meeting. Here we take a look at what the P&C really does.

Most schools have a parent representative body, commonly called Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association in state schools or a Parents and Friends (P&F) Association in non-government schools.

The parent committee is the voice of the parents. It’s at these meetings that decisions affecting your child at school are made. Committee meetings are usually held once a month. Any parent or guardian can attend.

Parent associations are a great way to:

• get the inside story on what’s really happening in the school (not the gossip). The principal usually is avail-able to answer questions and teachers sometimes attend too • influence school policy (want to change the uniform? Lobby through the P&C) • have a say in the development of school activities such as excursions and camps and curriculum • guide school management in its financial planning by helping prioritise the resource wish-list • contribute to the school’s resources through various fundraising projects • meet other parents

Schools have their own budgets —but invariably they need more than the budget allows. That’s where the parent committee becomes a really valuable partner. P&Cs often run or manage services like tuckshops (or canteens), uniform shops or after school care/vacation care.

Some school parent committees have special interest sub-committees that focus on, for example, a sport or the music program or the school grounds.

Fundraising is a powerful way in which to help your school get much-wanted additional resources—from extra library books to a shade cloth over a play area, new tuckshop kitchen; even a new swimming pool.

School fundraising can take many forms from product drives to special event stalls (for Mothers’ Day or Fathers’ Day, for example) and social events—for students (like school discos), parents (such as casino nights or wine tast-ings) and families (like trivia nights and BBQs). Parent committees are also the driving force behind big communi-ty events like fetes or carnivals.

All money raised by a parent committee must be used for the benefit of the school. But as a member, you get to vote on how funds are used—and ultimately, that can only benefit your child too.
