u Thanks to Kent KBØRWI for the KAR parking lot http://ksarrl.org where you will find KARs back to Nov 1999.

u Thanks to Ken Blair who created KAR more than 30 years ago. KAR orig- ionaly was a real paper back magazine with photos that Ken had to travel to KC to have the plates burned. Origionaly it was extremly work intensive for one man to do. Ken also bought a veryexpensive specal, small print typewriter to do the small print you see in the scanned version.

The digital world has changed all of that. Back when Packet had a path from KC to Colorado I put KAR on Packand it reached most Ks hams until support for nodes across the state ended the cross Kansas path.

Recently Ken has been sending me a scanned page of the KAR magazine for todays digital version. I am sure you are enjoying ham radio of the 80s.

Ran across this interesting photo from 1917 of a young co-ed college student who is, according to the caption, a licensed radio operator.

I've no idea what kind of equipment she's working on. However, the schematic on the wall, if I've been following Myron's lessons correctly, is a receiver tank circuit using a variable capacitor for tuning, but instead of a speaker, actuates a clapper of some sort.

At any rate, it's fascinating to look at this photo and ponder the details.

u This is from MAARS Manhattans Club. Jim is their president, I think. I am still on their list. Fun to look at this. I hope it is interesting to others as well.

Kansas State RACES Officer – Jim KCØNYK

KS State RACES Officer article for the KARS Newsletter for June 2014Well, the magical time of the year has come around again FIELD DAY!!!!! A weekend calledvariously as controlled mayhem, a radio party deluxe, and so much more, usually using language not fit for a high toned publication such as this! While many clubs are planning for the big event, RACES will also be putting in a bit of a twist of our own. At 1100 hours CDT on Saturday morning, 28 June, we will be running a short check in net on 7.200 mHz from Polk Daniels Lake near Howard, KS, using the Kansas RACES call sign WX0KR. The exchange will be as follows: Unit call sign [County RACES officer should use / RACES [insert your county], the RST report and number of RACES personnel on scene. The net control officer will ask for relays if needed and any

unit available is requested to assist. This will be a directed net so remember to run everything thru the net controller. So a viable exchange would between the Elk County RACES team would be as follows : WX0KR de WX0EK RACES ELK ur sig 5/9, QSL net control would respond, WX0KR QSL all KSSRO ur sig 5/9 QSL then control will put out QRZ for the next station. After this event is over everyone should revert to their normal issued call sign or the call sign you are using for Field Day, grab a hamburger and get ready to work traffic for the next 25 or so hours! Remember, we have a number of snakes and spider which can ruin FD. Make sure that the Safety Officers brief all participants as to any potential issues. Assure that you have operators trained in first aid. Be very careful refueling generators or camp lights and be sure all persons keep hydrated. Of course we will all take precautionsregarding severe weather including lightning which can spoil the weekend quite nicely!Take care with trip hazards, hanging wires, etc. Also, remember that the BBQ grills need to be treated with respect as well. The whole point of Field Day is to have fun, make contacts and show the best side of ham radio. So be especially helpful to those who come to visit the site. Answer questions fully and if you have a designated PIO in your group make sure you have information there for them to take away with them.Overall, we are looking forward to seeing enormous log book entries from everyone. Don't forget to set up a station to work the 10 and 6 meter bands and if at all possible have a cw station and a digital station going. Be safe, have fun. The State RACES team is looking forward to meeting as many hams as possible both on the air....the Preparedness net runs each 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday nights at 19:00 CDT on 7.200 MHz and is open to not only RACES team members but to any hams who are licensed for the frequency. We also run an Echo Link net, currently hosted by KC0MIA at the same time. We are in the process of establishing an Echo Link Conference server for WX0KR and will get that information out as soon as it is available. For those who can attend, the Kansas Preparedness Conference is set this year for July 25 - 26 at the Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Topeka. You can register for this event by going to KSTRAIN at https://ks.train.org/. RACES will be holding a breakout session hosted by the KS RACES Officer and others on THE ROLE OF RACES IN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS [ESF 2] and also a RACES Team meeting for current RACES Team members and those who are interested in knowing more about RACES in a separate session. Those times are not yet available, but will be in the next newsletter as well on Larry's List, Kansas RACES Yahoo page, KS RACES Face book page and on the nets.Kansas RACES will also be at the ARRL State Convention August 17th in Salina, the Joplin Ham Fest August 22-23 in Joplin and at the Kansas State Fair, September 8th in Hutchinson. Stop by and say Howdy!Anyone who needs to contact the State RACES Officer for any reason can do so using the new email [email protected] or my cell phone 620.545.5072 is never off.

u This month:

Before you buy an electronic fluorescent ballast, don’t forget to consider the Ballast Factor. Not to be confused with Power Factor, Ballast Factor is a measure of the actual lumen output for a specific lamp-ballast system. For example, assume the ballast specifications show a ballast factor of 0.85 for a single 32 watt T8 fluorescent lamp. The lamp alone may have a rated light output of 3000 lumens. The lamp-ballast system lumens are determined by multiplying 0.85 x 3000 = 2550 lumens. In this example, the addition of the ballast results in lower “system lumens” than rated lamp lumens. Ballast factors cover a wide range for specific lamp-ballast combinations. Low ballast factors range from 0.70 to 0.80. Normal ballast factors are 0.85 to 1.0. High ballast factors are 1.1 to 1.2. Don’t confuse ballast factor with energy efficiency. Although a low ballast factor reduces lumen output, it also uses less input power. Low ballast factors may be best for retrofits where energy use reduction is the goal. For new construction, high ballast factor is usually preferred because it means fewer fixtures can be installed in a space. It is also important to note that the ballast factorvalue is not simply a characteristic of the ballast, but of the lamp-ballast system. Ballasts often operate more than one type of lamp. Ballast specification sheets will show a ballast factor for each type of lamp it operates. See Topbulb’s selection of electronic fluorescent ballasts here.

Larry, the WLW tower is also kind of unique - it's a Blaw-Knox cantilever design and there were only a few of those ever built and fewer still in existence. Another example is the WSM tower in Nashville - you may recognize that station as the flagship of the Grand Ole Opry. Their tower was built in 1932 and is fed by open wire feed line. I think that station has always been a 50kW station. Their current transmitter is a solid state unit. I've seen pictures of the readout on the transmitter that showed 50.63kW of power out and 61 watts reflected - that's a pretty decent SWR. For more info:

Larry,

My mother lives about 3 miles from the WLW transmitter site that Joe mentioned. The Blaw Knox antenna is both a pretty site and a wonderful landmark for navigating around town. She tells stories about farmer's who could pick up WLW with nothing more than a length of rusty barbed wire. In some cases, the metal gutters anddownspouts of the farmhouse would also rectify the signal.

This transmitter site is only a couple of miles off I-75 heading north to Dayton. It is definitely worth the side tripif you are heading to the Hamvention. 39.353124,-84.325116 ???

u You won’t believe this site! In your spare time, you can spend days going thru the Smithsonian just sitting in front of your computer….Absolutely Amazing!!!

Here is something special, a virtual tour of the Smithsonian Museum room by room. It is really something with a 360 degree viewing by using your cursor. You easily spend days/weeks looking at everything. Just marvelous forkids and adults. Follow the blue arrows on the floor to move into new rooms.

Shows inside and outside of the museum and there little cameras here and there which show detailed info on certain things. If you click on the floors (upper right corner) you get a floor plan of that floor and you can click on a blue circle and go directly to that room.

Truly incredible web site.

Watch it in full screen when you open this up. Use the roller on your mouse to move in and out. Look for the "arrows" on the floor and click on them. They take you to other places.

Many of these have special calls with special QSL cards or certificates. MO and KS seem to be left out but OK has a submarine and the call is ---- WW2SUB ! u Long ago, when I was still with my "starter wife", I was in the room we used for my shack, and several other things.. I overheard her sister asking "Don't you get tired of him being in that (spitting the words) Ham Shack of his? There was a silence of about 20 seconds, then the "former" replied... "Well, I KNOW where he IS"... that shut the sister-in-law's mouth.

It's my FAVORITE story for "ham widows" or those about to become one.

u As a follow-up on my recent Email, re. Vishay/Sprague "orange drop" capacitors (used by just about everybody), the company it'self is the one dropping the line. My sales rep from MOUSER electronics was as surprised as anybody, and did verify that it was Vishay/Sprague who had decided that the line was "obsolete".

MOUSER does carry Panasonic and Cornell-Dublier caps that are pretty close crosses, both in value and SIZE. The real problem for we restorers of vintage radio gear (i. e. tube) is that components have drastically shrunk over the years, and while that's great for "modern" equipment size, it's "not so pretty good" for replacement of wax/paper & old electrolytic caps from 30's through 60's gear, because they're not BIG ENOUGH! A further example are the newer resistors - in my restoration of three National HRO-60 receivers, I found that NEW STYLE 2w resistors were the physical size of earlier ½w resistors, with 1w (new) components being the size of earlier ¼w values. I found that the new ones simply did NOT dissipate heat as well, either. MOUSER came to the fore on this problem too, as they carry a line of BRAND NEW (not NOS) carbon composition resistors in 10%and 5% tolerances, in the familiar sized "packages"... the manufacturer name is KAYAMA. p/n's begin with 719-RC... [ example: 719 - RC ½ 151 - JB = 150 ohm ] Hope this info helps somebody. Tom Dailey - WØEAJ<[email protected]>

u There are ham groups in Colorado that are at this level. Bet the TV didn't cover whether or not the group wastrained and *credentialed* to be there or just "hams who showed up".

The former are welcome at numerous training events around Colorado and the U.S. nowadays.

The latter, not so much.

The rmham.org communications trailer was invited to participate in a recent Statewide Comm and Command Vehicle interoperability test, for example, and also has State-authorized radio gear on board on the digital trunking system... besides all the other stuff on board.

But... It's not traditional "ham radio" or even just ARES involvement that gains such access today, so to speak. Folks operating that trailer in real disaster typically need background checks and documented basic level Incident Command System (ICS) training as a bare minimum.

Not hard to do, but it weeds out 90% of the ham population nevertheless. People are lazy. They'll say they want to be involved in EmComm but when told they'll need to take a week off of work to park their butt in a FEMA class, they won't.

Media (including ARRL in the magazine) gloss over the time/commitment requirements. TV is understandable. "Anyone can get involved in EmComm!" True. But will you really work to meet the requirements?

Definitely do-able. Not a big deal. Just takes time and commitment.

u http://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/prepping-101-emp-attack-natural-nuclear/ Even if you don't agree with where this article came from, it's a pretty reasonable assessment of EMP(s), and unlike the typical "The World's Coming to an End" stuff I have read, this actually makes more sense. TC

u I recently learned from my sales-rep at MOUSER, that the Vishay/Sprague "orange drop" line of capacitors are to be dropped. Seemingly, they're "obsolete" (guess that means I am too), so for those of you, like me, who enjoy using them for restorations, we'd better find another line to buy. u I myself HAVE used uShip. I once sold a Johnson 500 xmtr to a fellow in California, and anybody who knowsabout them, knows that the power-supply / modulator ALONE weighs 112 lbs! The exciter weighs a mere 60+, but to get it out to Santa Clara, would have cost a fortune.. We found a young man who was a professional motocross rider, and he lifted that baby up and put it in the passenger side of his Toyota PU, and off she went - delivered to the buyer's door in PERFECT condition - can't recall the charge (paid for by the buyer), but it was quite reasonable.

<http://www.uship.com/>

I have also used the UPS Customer Service Center services (NOT the UPS "stores"), as they have catalytically-activated foam "pillows" that can make custom fitted packaging for boxes, containing such critters as Hallicrafters SX-62A's, Hammarlund HQ-129X's, Multi-Elmac AF-67's, and even an 88 lb Hammarlund SP-600... all arrived with NO damage whatsoever, and you can REUSE the box & packing. NOTE: Not all of the CustomerSvc. Centers have these, so verify first, before lugging that beast to one.... besides, boatanchor radios will keep your house on the GROUND when tornadoes come.

u A splendid anti-EMP case for the IC-706, or just about any portable/mobile HF rig - it's a 20mm ammo case for the M-139. The lid SNAPS on (takes some effort to latch AND unlatch it), and with the waterproof gasket, it's impervious to water. The steel it's made of and the fact that both ends latch... metal-to-metal, protect it better than we'd protect our own body, I suspect. There's still room for the mic, power cord, and a light-gauge wire antenna w/coax. Contact your nearest Army or Marine Corps recruiter for details... HI HI HI Tom - WØEAJ

Yes, it's true - 71 years ago, Mrs. Dailey brought a little Dailey into the World... It's been a hell of a ride, so far...Won a few... lost a few... and this year, lost too many... guess I'll have to play "Happy Birthday" on the kazoo, for myself. "Make Noise, Bother People, and try to irritate somebody EVERY DAY" - words to live by. Thanks Dad.... Thanks Mom... thanks to all of you who hung on as we went 'round the corners. Tom
